Clear Your Internet Explorer Cache Free Guide
Understanding Internet Explorer Cache and Why It Matters
Your web browser stores information on your computer to make websites load faster when you visit them again. This stored information is called a cache. Internet Explorer, which was Microsoft's web browser for many years, automatically created a cache folder containing images, text, cookies, and temporary files from every website you visited.

When you visit a website, your browser downloads all the elements needed to display that page—images, scripts, style sheets, and more. Instead of downloading these same files every single time you return to that website, Internet Explorer kept copies in a cache folder on your hard drive. The next time you visited, the browser could load these stored files from your computer rather than downloading them again from the internet. This process made websites appear to load much faster for repeat visits.
Over time, this cache can grow quite large. A typical cache folder might contain hundreds or thousands of files taking up significant storage space on your computer. Beyond storage concerns, cached files can sometimes cause problems. Outdated cached versions of web pages might display instead of the current version. Cookies stored in the cache track your browsing behavior across websites. Security-conscious users often want to remove this data to protect their privacy.
Internet Explorer stored cache files in specific locations on Windows computers, typically in folders with names like "Temporary Internet Files" or "Cache." Different versions of Internet Explorer stored these files in slightly different locations, but the principle remained the same—temporary data accumulated as you browsed.
Practical Takeaway: Understanding that your browser cache contains stored website data helps explain why clearing it can resolve display issues, free up storage space, and remove browsing history that you may prefer to keep private.
Locating Your Internet Explorer Cache Files
Before you can clear your Internet Explorer cache, you need to know where these files are stored on your computer. Internet Explorer kept cache files in several locations depending on your Windows version and Internet Explorer version. Most users had their primary cache folder in a hidden system directory that wasn't immediately visible in Windows File Explorer.

On Windows 7 and earlier versions, Internet Explorer typically stored cache files in a folder called "Temporary Internet Files." This folder was located deep within your user profile directory. The full path looked something like: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files. The AppData folder was hidden by default, which is why many users never saw this directory even though it was accumulating gigabytes of data.
On Windows 8 and later, Microsoft reorganized where Internet Explorer stored this data. The browser began using a folder called "INetCache" instead of "Temporary Internet Files." This folder was also located in the AppData\Local directory but under a different path structure. Windows 10 users would find cache-related folders in similar locations, though Internet Explorer became less prominent as Microsoft shifted focus to their newer Edge browser.
Internet Explorer also stored cookies, browsing history, and form data in separate but nearby locations. Cookies were often kept in an "INetCookies" folder or similar directory. This separation meant that clearing your cache didn't automatically remove cookies—they were distinct data stores that required separate deletion if you wanted to remove all browsing traces.
The reason Internet Explorer stored these files in hidden system directories was to keep them out of sight from casual browsing. Most users never needed to manually locate these folders since Internet Explorer provided built-in tools to clear the cache through the browser's settings menu. However, understanding their location helped users who wanted to manually manage storage or troubleshoot browser issues.
Practical Takeaway: Cache files were stored in hidden Windows system folders, primarily in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\, and knowing this location helps you understand the scope of data your browser was collecting over time.
Using Internet Explorer Settings to Clear Cache
The most straightforward method to clear your Internet Explorer cache was through the browser's built-in tools. This approach required no technical knowledge and could be completed in just a few clicks. Internet Explorer provided access to cache-clearing functions through the "Delete Browsing History" feature, which was the standard way users removed cached data.

To access this feature in Internet Explorer versions 8 through 11, users could click the "Tools" menu (the gear icon in newer versions) and select "Delete Browsing History" or similar option. This opened a dialog box with several checkboxes representing different types of stored data. You could choose to delete just the cache, or you could select multiple options including cookies, browsing history, download history, form data, and passwords.
The dialog presented several important choices. One checkbox was labeled "Temporary Internet Files and website files" or similar—this was the actual cache. Another checkbox controlled cookies. A third managed browsing history. A fourth handled saved form data. Users could select any combination of these options based on what they wanted to remove. Some people wanted to clear only the cache while keeping cookies that remembered their login information on favorite websites. Others wanted to remove everything for maximum privacy.
After selecting the desired options, users clicked the "Delete" button. Internet Explorer then removed the selected data from their computer. The time required depended on how much data needed to be deleted—a small cache might take a few seconds, while a very large cache of several gigabytes might take a minute or more. Internet Explorer would display a progress indicator during the deletion process.
One useful feature was the ability to set Internet Explorer to automatically clear cache when closing the browser. This option, found in Internet Explorer's Advanced settings, meant you didn't have to manually clear cache each time if you preferred to keep your browsing private. Internet Explorer could be configured to delete everything when you closed the application, ensuring minimal storage of personal browsing data.
Practical Takeaway: Internet Explorer's built-in Delete Browsing History tool provided a simple, point-and-click method to remove cache without needing to locate or manually delete files, and users could customize exactly what types of data to remove.
Clearing Cache for Specific Websites and Targeted Cleanup
Sometimes you didn't want to clear all your Internet Explorer cache—you only wanted to remove data from specific websites. Perhaps a particular website wasn't displaying correctly because of outdated cached files, or you wanted to remove information from one site while keeping cached data from others to maintain browsing speed elsewhere. Internet Explorer didn't provide a built-in interface to delete cache for individual websites, but there were effective methods to accomplish targeted cleanup.

One approach involved manually locating and deleting cache files through Windows File Explorer. Since cache files were stored in the Temporary Internet Files or INetCache folder, you could navigate to that location, sort files by the website they came from, and delete only the files associated with the problematic site. Each cached file contained metadata about its origin, though the folder view didn't always make this obvious. This method required understanding where cache files were stored and some comfort with Windows file management, but it provided precise control.
An easier alternative involved using the command line or specialized cleaning utilities. You could open Command Prompt and run specific commands to clear Internet Explorer cache selectively. For example, commands like "RunDll32.exe inetcpl.cpl,ClearMyTracksByProcess" could clear cache for a specific browser process. While this sounds technical, these were simple one-line commands that users could copy and paste into Command Prompt, making it more accessible than manually navigating folders.
Another practical method was to use Internet Explorer's "InPrivate Browsing" mode for websites where you wanted to avoid caching. When you opened a new InPrivate window, Internet Explorer didn't cache any data from that browsing session. This was particularly useful for banking sites, shopping, or any situation where you preferred not to store information. After closing the InPrivate window, nothing from that session remained in your cache.
Some third-party cleaning utilities specialized in removing browser cache and offered more sophisticated options than Internet Explorer's native tools. These programs could identify cache from specific websites, show file sizes, and allow selective deletion. However, such utilities weren't necessary—Internet Explorer's built-in tools combined with targeted manual deletion covered most needs.
Practical Takeaway: While Internet Explorer didn't offer a simple "clear this website's cache" button, you could achieve targeted cleanup through manual file deletion, Command Prompt commands, or by using InPrivate Browsing to prevent caching in the first place.
