Find Your Towed Vehicle Information Guide

Understanding Vehicle Towing and Recovery Basics

When a vehicle is towed, it's typically removed from a location by a towing company and taken to a storage facility or impound lot. This happens for various reasons including traffic violations, parking infractions, vehicle abandonment, repossession, or following accidents. Understanding the towing process helps you navigate what happens next and locate your vehicle efficiently.

Towing can occur in different contexts. Police departments may authorize tows when vehicles are parked illegally, blocking traffic, or involved in accidents. Private property owners can arrange tows for vehicles parked without permission on their lots. Lenders may repossess vehicles when loan payments are missed. In all these situations, your vehicle goes to a specific location, and information about that location must be documented.

Each towing situation generates paperwork. When an officer or property manager authorizes a tow, they create a report with the vehicle details, towing reason, tow company name, and storage location. This documentation is crucial because it creates a trail you can follow to recover your vehicle. The tow company receives instructions about where to take the car and how long to store it.

Storage facilities typically charge daily fees ranging from $20 to $75 depending on the vehicle size and location. These costs accumulate quickly—a vehicle stored for 10 days could incur $200 to $750 in storage fees alone. Some facilities also charge towing fees, ranging from $75 to $300. Understanding these costs helps you prioritize vehicle recovery.

Practical takeaway: Recognize that towing creates a paper trail. The authorization agency (police department, property manager, or lender) knows where your vehicle is located. Starting your search by contacting the entity that initiated the tow saves time and confusion.

Contacting Local Police and Traffic Enforcement

If your vehicle disappeared from a public street or parking area, local police or traffic enforcement likely handled the tow. Police departments maintain records of all vehicles they authorize for towing, and this information is usually available to vehicle owners within 24 to 48 hours of the tow.

To start your search, contact your city's police non-emergency line or traffic division. Provide your vehicle's license plate number, the location where it was parked, and the approximate date and time it went missing. Many departments have online systems where you can search for towed vehicles by entering your license plate number or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Some cities maintain public databases specifically for towed vehicle information, accessible through their official websites.

Police records typically include the towing company name, storage facility address, reason for tow, and the date and time of towing. Request a copy of the tow report—this document contains critical details needed to retrieve your vehicle. The tow report often includes the storage facility's phone number and hours of operation, along with information about payment methods accepted.

Response times vary by jurisdiction. Urban areas with frequent towing may have dedicated staff handling these inquiries and can provide information within hours. Smaller departments might take longer, especially if staff members are limited. Calling during business hours (typically 8 AM to 5 PM weekdays) usually produces faster results than after-hours inquiries.

In some cases, police departments mail tow notices to vehicle owners using the registration address on file. If you haven't received a notice but suspect your vehicle was towed, don't wait—proactively contact the department. Delays in retrieval mean accumulating storage fees.

Practical takeaway: Your police department is your starting point for vehicles towed from public spaces. Have your license plate number ready when calling, and ask specifically for the tow company name and storage location address. Request a copy of the tow report to have complete documentation.

Checking Private Property Tow Records and Property Managers

If your vehicle was parked on private property—such as an apartment complex, shopping center, parking garage, or private lot—the property owner or manager arranged the tow. Unlike police-initiated tows, private property tows don't appear in municipal databases, so you must contact the property directly.

Start by reaching out to the property management company or owner where your vehicle was parked. Most apartment complexes, office parks, and commercial properties have office staff who can confirm whether they authorized a tow and provide the towing company details. When you call, explain the situation clearly: your vehicle is missing from a specific location, you believe it may have been towed, and you need information about the towing company and storage location.

Property managers are required to maintain records of towing authorizations. These records include the towing company contact information, date and time of tow, vehicle description, reason for tow, and storage facility location. Some properties post tow notices or warning signs indicating that unauthorized vehicles will be towed. Review these notices—they often contain the towing company's contact information.

Private towing companies used by property owners often operate independently from municipal systems. They may have different storage facilities, payment procedures, and fee structures than police-authorized tows. A private tow from a shopping center might go to a lot five miles away, operated by a small company not listed on any city website.

Document the time you contact the property and who you speak with. Take notes on what information they provide. If the property manager seems uncooperative or reluctant to share towing information, state clearly that you own the vehicle and need to recover it. In most jurisdictions, providing towing information to vehicle owners is legally required.

Practical takeaway: Identify the property owner or manager where your vehicle was parked and contact them directly. Ask for the specific towing company name, storage facility address, and the date/time of towing. This information is not in public databases—you must obtain it from the property itself.

Working with Towing Companies and Storage Facilities

Once you identify the towing company, contact them directly. Most towing companies maintain their own storage lots or contract with independent storage facilities. When you call, provide your vehicle's license plate number and your name. The towing company can confirm whether they have your vehicle and provide the storage location address, current storage fees, and instructions for retrieval.

Towing companies operate under state and local regulations that require them to maintain certain records and procedures. They must be able to document when a vehicle was brought in, by whom, and the current location and condition of the vehicle. This documentation helps prevent vehicle loss and ensures owners can locate their vehicles.

Ask the towing company several specific questions: What are the current charges (towing fee plus daily storage)? What payment methods do they accept (cash, card, check)? What are the storage facility hours? What documents do you need to bring to retrieve your vehicle? What is the vehicle's current condition? Many facilities require you to bring valid identification and proof of vehicle ownership (registration or title).

Storage fees accumulate daily. A typical breakdown might look like this: $150 towing fee, plus $35 daily storage. If your vehicle has been stored for 7 days, the total owed could be $395 before you can retrieve it. Some jurisdictions cap daily storage fees—for example, limiting them to $25 per day after the first day—so ask whether fee limits apply in your area.

Payment is usually required before the vehicle is released. Most facilities accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards, but some older operations may only take checks. Confirm payment methods before visiting. If you cannot pay immediately, ask about payment plans or whether the facility can hold the vehicle while you arrange funds.

Practical takeaway: Contact the towing company directly with your license plate number. Write down all charges, payment methods accepted, facility hours, and required documents. Calculate total fees including towing and accumulated daily storage to understand what you'll need to pay for retrieval.

Locating Repossessed Vehicles and Lender Records

If your vehicle was repossessed due to missed loan payments, the process differs from police or private property tows. The lender (bank, credit union, or finance company) initiates repossession through a licensed repossession agency. Your vehicle goes to a specific storage location controlled by the repossession company or lender, not a public impound lot.

Start by contacting your lender directly. Check your loan documents for contact information, or look at your billing statements for a phone number. Inform the lender that your vehicle has been repossessed and request the name and location
