Fix Your Google Maps Address Information Guide

Understanding Google Maps Business Information

Google Maps is one of the most widely used navigation and business discovery tools in the world. According to Google, over 1 billion people use Google Maps each month to find local businesses, restaurants, services, and directions. When someone searches for your business on Google Maps, they see information like your address, phone number, hours of operation, photos, customer reviews, and website link. This information appears not just in Google Maps itself, but also in Google Search results, which means fixing your address can impact how many people find you.

Your business information on Google Maps is managed through something called a Google Business Profile. This is a free listing that any business owner can create or manage. The address information you provide becomes the source that Google uses across its entire ecosystem of products. When your address is incorrect or incomplete, potential customers may have trouble finding you, call wrong locations, or visit competitor businesses instead. Research shows that 76% of consumers who search for a local business on their smartphone visit that business within 24 hours, making accurate location information critical to your success.

There are several reasons why your address information might be inaccurate on Google Maps. Your business may have recently moved and the old address is still showing. Multiple listings for the same business might exist, with different address information. Someone may have reported incorrect information, or Google's automated systems may have pulled data from outdated online directories. Sometimes address formatting issues cause problems—for example, if your street address uses an abbreviation that Google doesn't recognize, it may display incorrectly or not at all.

Understanding how Google gathers and displays business information is the first step toward fixing problems. Google collects address data from many sources, including your direct submissions through Google Business Profile, third-party business directories, websites, and user submissions. When Google finds conflicting information from multiple sources, it may prioritize certain sources over others. This means your official submission through Google Business Profile should be your primary focus, as this is the information you control directly.

Practical Takeaway: Before making any changes, verify your actual business address is correct. Check your lease, business license, or official registration documents to confirm the exact street address, city, state, and ZIP code you should be using.

Accessing and Verifying Your Google Business Profile

The first step in fixing your address information is finding and accessing your Google Business Profile. You can start by visiting google.com/business and signing in with the Google account associated with your business. If you don't have a Google account, you'll need to create one first. Once you're signed in, you can search for your business by name to see if a profile already exists. Many business owners discover they have a profile they never created—this happens when Google automatically creates listings based on information from other online sources.

When you find your business listing, you'll see a dashboard that shows all the information Google currently displays about your business. This includes your address, phone number, website, hours, photos, and other details. Take time to review everything carefully. Your address should show exactly as it appears on your official business registration, including any suite numbers, apartment numbers, or building designations. For example, if your address is "123 Main Street, Suite 450," it should display exactly that way, not as "123 Main Street" alone.

Google requires you to verify that you own or manage the business before you can make significant changes to the listing. If you're already the owner of the profile, you'll see a "Verify" button or notification. The most common verification method is through a postcard that Google mails to your business address. This postcard arrives within 1-2 weeks and contains a verification code you enter into your Google Business Profile. Once you enter this code, your profile becomes verified, and you gain full editing authority.

If your business has moved since the profile was created, the verification postcard might arrive at your old address. In this case, you can request verification through other methods. Google offers alternative verification options including phone verification, email verification, or video call verification depending on your business type and location. You can also request that Google resend the postcard to your new address before verifying, though this requires explaining the situation to Google through their support channel.

During verification, make absolutely certain the address you claim is correct. Google takes verification seriously because fraudulent claims create problems for customers and legitimate businesses. Once verified, you become the primary point of contact for that listing, and you can update information whenever it changes. If someone else currently manages your profile and you don't have authority, you'll need to contact them or use Google's "request access" feature to gain ownership rights.

Practical Takeaway: Search for your business name on Google right now and screenshot what you see. Compare it to your actual address. Note any discrepancies so you know exactly what needs changing.

Correcting Your Street Address and Location Details

Once you've accessed your Google Business Profile and verified ownership, you can edit your address information. Click the "Edit" or "Manage" button next to your business information. You'll see fields for your street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Each field should be filled in separately—don't combine information into one field. For example, enter "123 Main Street" in the street address field, "Springfield" in the city field, "IL" in the state field, and "62701" in the ZIP code field.

Be precise about address formatting. Google recognizes standard address abbreviations for street types. Use "Street," "Avenue," "Road," "Boulevard," "Suite," "Apartment," and "Building" rather than "St.," "Ave.," "Rd.," "Blvd.," "Ste.," "Apt.," or "Bldg." While Google has improved its abbreviation recognition, spelling out these terms reduces the chance of errors. If your business is in a complex with multiple units, include your suite or unit number in the street address field. For example: "789 Commerce Drive, Building C, Suite 201."

If your business operates from a home address and you want to keep that private, Google offers a service area business option. Rather than displaying your home address publicly, you can mark yourself as a "Service area business" and specify the geographic areas where you serve customers. This is common for plumbers, electricians, consultants, and other professionals who travel to customer locations. When you select this option, customers won't see your physical address on the public listing, though you'll still need to provide it to Google for verification purposes.

Google Maps pinpoints your business location using the address you provide and maps it to geographic coordinates. Sometimes the map pin appears in the wrong location even though the address text is correct. This can happen in areas with unusual street layouts, new developments, or places where streets have similar names. If your map pin is in the wrong location, you can manually adjust it by clicking and dragging the pin to the correct spot on the map. Make sure the pin is centered on your actual business entrance or storefront.

After making address changes, Google typically takes 1-3 days to update the information across all its platforms. During this time, you might see both old and new addresses in search results as different systems synchronize. Don't make multiple rapid changes—wait for one update to complete before making additional edits. Each change you make is logged, and too many rapid edits can trigger Google's fraud detection systems, potentially limiting your ability to edit the profile temporarily.

Practical Takeaway: Write out your complete address exactly as it appears on your business license or lease, then enter it into Google Business Profile field by field. Verify the map pin is centered on your actual location, not just near it.

Dealing with Duplicate or Conflicting Listings

Many businesses discover they have multiple listings on Google Maps, each with different information. This is one of the most common reasons why address information appears incorrect. Duplicates happen when different people create separate profiles for the same business, when data from old business directories conflicts with current information, or when business name variations (like abbreviations or alternate names) trigger the creation of separate listings. Studies of local business listings show that approximately 25-50% of businesses have duplicate listings, depending on industry and location.

To find duplicate listings, search your business name on Google Maps and look carefully at all results. You might see your business listed multiple times with slightly different names or addresses. You can also use the Google Business Profile dashboard, which sometimes shows a "Duplicates" section that alerts you to other listings it has identified. Each duplicate listing will have its own address information, phone number, and reviews, which confuses customers and splits your online reputation across multiple profiles.
