How to Schedule an Appointment Through the Illinois Secretary of State System
The Illinois Secretary of State office provides an online appointment scheduling system that allows you to book a time slot at the Lombard DMV location. This system operates through the state's official website and represents the primary method for reserving an appointment time. The scheduling tool displays available time slots based on current demand and staffing levels at the specific location you choose.

To access the scheduling system, visit the Illinois Secretary of State website and navigate to the appointments section. You will need to select your preferred location (Lombard), the type of service you need, and your preferred date and time from the available options. The system typically shows appointment slots for the next 30 to 60 days, though availability can vary by season. During high-demand periods such as summer months or near driver's license expiration deadlines, slots may fill more quickly.
The appointment booking process usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. You will be asked to provide basic information including your name, phone number, email address, and the nature of your transaction. After completing the booking, you will receive a confirmation number via email or text message. This confirmation includes your appointment date, time, and a list of documents you should bring. You may also receive reminder notifications 24 hours before your appointment.
The system allows you to cancel or reschedule appointments if your plans change. Most facilities permit cancellations or changes up to 24 hours before your scheduled time. When you cancel, your time slot becomes available for other customers. If you need to reschedule, the system will show you available alternatives at that location or other nearby DMV offices.
It is important to note that the appointment system operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Slots open regularly as appointments are completed and cancellations occur. If you do not see available times for your preferred date, checking the system on different days may reveal newly opened slots.
Practical takeaway: Bookmark the Illinois Secretary of State appointments page and check it during off-peak hours like early morning or late evening for better availability of appointment slots.
What Documents to Prepare Before Your Appointment
The documents you need to bring depend on the specific transaction you are conducting at your appointment. For a driver's license renewal, you will typically need your current driver's license, proof of residence such as a utility bill or lease agreement, and proof of Social Security number. Proof of residence must be dated within the past 90 days and show your current address. Acceptable documents include recent electric bills, water bills, insurance statements, or mortgage paperwork.

For vehicle registration renewals, bring your vehicle registration notice, proof of insurance, vehicle identification number (VIN), and possibly your odometer reading depending on your vehicle's age and type. The DMV staff can explain specific requirements when you arrive, but having these documents ready prevents delays. Many customers find it helpful to create a checklist based on their confirmation email, which lists required documents for their specific transaction type.
If you are applying for a replacement driver's license due to loss, theft, or damage, bring a valid photo ID if available. If you do not have a valid ID, the DMV staff will explain alternative documentation methods. For address changes on your driver's license, bring proof of your new residence and your current license.
For vehicle title transfers, the requirements vary based on whether you are transferring a title to another person, adding or removing a name, or handling an inheritance situation. Generally, you will need the current title document, a bill of sale or other transfer document, proof of insurance, and identification. Some title transfers require notarization, which you should complete before arriving at your appointment.
Organize your documents in a folder or envelope so they are easy to locate during your appointment. Making copies of important documents before arrival can be helpful, though the DMV office can sometimes provide copies if needed. Bringing original documents is essential—photocopies alone are typically not accepted for most transactions.
Practical takeaway: Check your appointment confirmation email for the specific document list for your transaction, and gather everything the day before your appointment to avoid last-minute scrambling.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
When you arrive for your appointment at the Lombard DMV, allow yourself 15 to 20 minutes to find parking and locate the office entrance. Most customers are asked to check in at a reception area or kiosk when they arrive. You will present your confirmation number and identification. The staff will verify that you have the correct appointment time and direct you to a waiting area.

Wait times for customers with appointments are typically much shorter than walk-in wait times. On average, appointment holders wait 10 to 30 minutes before being called to a service window, though this varies depending on how many transactions are being processed and whether any complex cases are taking longer than usual. During peak hours, wait times may extend toward 30 to 45 minutes.
Once called to a service window, a DMV representative will review your documents and verify the information you provided during the appointment scheduling process. They will ask you to confirm your transaction details and may ask follow-up questions about the specific service you need. For example, if you are renewing your driver's license, they will confirm your address, vision information, and whether you need to update any other details. This portion typically takes 10 to 15 minutes.
If you are having your photograph taken for a license renewal or replacement, the process occurs during your appointment. The DMV has specific requirements for acceptable photos, including neutral background, clear visibility of your face, and no sunglasses or large hats. If your photo does not meet requirements, the DMV staff will take another one.
For vehicle registration and title work, the representative will process your forms, collect fees, and provide you with documentation of your transaction. The DMV accepts cash, checks, and card payments. Processing times vary by transaction type, but most routine renewals and registrations are completed within your appointment window.
At the conclusion of your appointment, you will receive a receipt showing what was processed and any fees paid. For driver's license renewals, your new license will arrive by mail within 1 to 2 weeks. For vehicle registrations, you may receive your new registration and stickers on the same day or by mail, depending on the type of transaction.
Practical takeaway: Arrive 10 minutes early, bring all documents in an organized manner, and have your confirmation number visible when you check in to move through the process efficiently.
Alternative Methods if You Cannot Visit in Person
Not all DMV transactions require an in-person visit. The Illinois Secretary of State offers several services that you can complete online, by mail, or through third-party service locations. For example, driver's license renewals for individuals who meet certain criteria—such as
