Free Guide to Cleaning Throw Pillows Safely

Understanding Throw Pillow Fabrics and Their Care Requirements

Throw pillows come in many different materials, and each one needs different care to stay looking nice and last longer. The fabric your pillow is made from determines how you should clean it, what temperature water to use, and which cleaning products are safe. Before you start any cleaning process, you need to identify what your pillow is made of so you don't accidentally damage it.

Cotton is one of the most common throw pillow fabrics. It's durable and can handle regular washing, but it can also shrink if exposed to high heat. Linen pillows have a similar look to cotton but are made from flax fibers. They're strong and get softer with age, though they wrinkle more easily than cotton. Polyester is popular because it resists wrinkles and fading, making it a practical choice for high-traffic living areas. Velvet pillows have a soft, plush texture but require gentler handling since the pile can flatten or show water marks if not dried correctly.

Silk and satin pillows are delicate fabrics that need special attention. Silk comes from silkworms and has a smooth, luxurious feel, but it can be damaged by harsh chemicals and high temperatures. Wool pillows offer warmth and natural stain resistance, but they can felt or shrink if treated incorrectly. Blended fabrics—combinations of two or more materials—have their own care needs depending on which fibers make up the majority of the fabric.

The best way to identify your pillow's fabric is to check the care tag, which is usually found on a seam or the back of the pillow. The tag will list the fiber content as a percentage and often includes symbols showing recommended washing and drying methods. If you can't find a tag, look at the pillow closely. Cotton feels natural and breathable, polyester feels smooth and slightly plastic-like, and silk or satin has a distinctive sheen. When in doubt, treat the pillow as if it's delicate to avoid causing damage.

Practical Takeaway: Before cleaning any throw pillow, locate and read the care tag. Write down the fabric type and any symbols shown. If the tag is missing, err on the side of caution and use gentler cleaning methods suited to delicate fabrics.

Spot Cleaning for Fresh Stains and Spills

Spot cleaning is the fastest way to handle fresh stains on throw pillows before they set permanently into the fabric. The key to successful spot cleaning is acting quickly—the sooner you treat a stain, the easier it is to remove. Most fresh stains can be treated at home using common household items, and spot cleaning keeps you from having to wash the entire pillow when only one area needs attention.

Start by blotting the stain with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Never rub the stain, as this pushes the liquid deeper into the fabric fibers and spreads it over a larger area. Blot from the outside edges of the stain toward the center, using a fresh section of cloth as it becomes saturated. This technique removes as much of the wet material as possible before you apply any cleaning solution. For solid stains like chocolate or mud, let the material dry completely first, then gently scrape away the dried residue with a dull knife or spoon.

For most stains on colorfast fabrics, mix a simple cleaning solution using one tablespoon of mild dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Dip a clean white cloth into the solution and dab it onto the stain, working from the edges toward the center. Let the solution sit for about five minutes, then blot with a damp cloth to remove the cleaning solution. Finally, blot with a dry cloth to absorb excess moisture. Repeat this process if the stain remains.

Different stains may need different approaches. For oil-based stains like grease or makeup, sprinkle baking soda on the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes to absorb the oil before vacuuming it away. For protein-based stains like blood or egg, use cold water only, never hot, since heat sets these stains permanently. Wine or juice stains respond well to club soda, which you can blot onto the stain and let sit for several minutes. Ink stains need rubbing alcohol applied with a cotton swab. Always test your cleaning solution on a hidden area of the pillow first to make sure it won't cause discoloration or damage.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a stain-cleaning kit near your seating area containing white cloth, white vinegar, mild dish soap, baking soda, and club soda. When a spill happens, blot immediately and treat the stain within the first hour for the best results.

Hand Washing Methods for Delicate Pillows

Hand washing is the gentlest cleaning method for throw pillows, making it the right choice for delicate fabrics like silk, satin, velvet, and wool. Hand washing gives you complete control over water temperature, cleaning product strength, and agitation level. This method works well for pillows that have decorative elements like beading, embroidery, or fringe that could be damaged in a washing machine.

Fill a basin or sink with cool water and add a small amount of mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics. Never use regular laundry detergent, which can be too harsh. Wool-specific or silk-specific detergents are formulated to protect these fibers and are worth using if your pillow needs them. Submerge the pillow and gently squeeze the soapy water through the fabric. Avoid twisting, wringing, or scrubbing, as these actions can damage delicate fibers and cause colors to run. If your pillow has a removable cover, you can wash the cover and the inner pillow separately for more control.

Soak the pillow for about five to ten minutes, then gently squeeze the soapy water out without applying pressure. Rinse the pillow by placing it under cool running water and squeezing gently until all soap is removed. This rinsing step is important because soap residue left in the fabric can attract dirt and make the pillow feel stiff. You may need to rinse several times, changing the water in your basin between rinses, until the water runs clear and no suds appear.

After rinsing, gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Place the pillow on a clean, dry towel and roll it up to absorb more moisture. Never hang wet pillows from a clothesline, as the weight of the water can stretch the fabric and distort the pillow's shape. Instead, lay it flat on a drying rack or on top of dry towels in a well-ventilated area. You can speed up drying by placing a fan nearby or opening windows on a sunny day. Turn the pillow over halfway through drying to ensure both sides dry evenly. The pillow should dry completely within 24 to 48 hours depending on humidity and air circulation.

Practical Takeaway: Always use cool water and mild detergent when hand washing pillows. Test the water temperature and detergent on a small hidden area first. Dry pillows flat on towels rather than hanging them, and allow 24 to 48 hours for complete drying.

Machine Washing Techniques for Durable Fabrics

Many throw pillows with durable fabrics like cotton and polyester can be machine washed, which is faster and easier than hand washing. Machine washing works well for everyday pillows that aren't made from delicate materials and don't have intricate decorations. Before putting a pillow in the washing machine, remove any removable covers and check that zippers or buttons are closed to prevent snagging. Check the care tag for specific temperature recommendations, as some fabrics do better in cold water while others can handle warm water.

Place pillows inside a mesh washing bag or pillowcase tied at the end before putting them in the machine. This protection prevents excessive agitation and keeps the pillow from getting caught on the machine's drum. Use a gentle or delicate cycle rather than a regular cycle, and choose cool or warm water depending on the care tag instructions. Add a mild laundry detergent, using less than you would for regular laundry since pillows don't have heavy soil like clothing does. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, as these can
