Understanding Clitoris Anatomy: Basic Structure and Components

The clitoris is a complex organ made up of several interconnected parts that work together. Many people think of the clitoris as only the small visible bump, but that's just one small portion. The entire clitoral structure is much larger and extends internally into the body. Understanding this anatomy helps you recognize what you're looking at and how different parts connect to one another.

The clitoris contains three main sections: the glans (the tip you can see), the shaft, and the body. The glans is roughly the size of a pea in most people, though size varies significantly from person to person. It's covered by a small fold of skin called the clitoral hood or prepuce, which protects this sensitive tissue. Underneath the glans lies the shaft, which is a column of tissue that extends upward into the body at an angle.

The body of the clitoris is the largest part, even though you cannot see it from the outside. This portion sits deep inside the pelvis and branches into two arms called crura (pronounced "kroo-uh"). These arms extend backward and downward on each side of the vaginal opening. The entire structure is filled with erectile tissue that contains thousands of nerve endings—in fact, the clitoris has roughly 8,000 nerve endings concentrated in a small area, making it extraordinarily sensitive.

Below the clitoral body lies the vestibule, which is the space between the two labia minora (inner lips). This area contains the openings to the urethra and vagina. The clitoris, urethra, and vaginal opening are all separate structures positioned close to one another in this region. Glands in the vestibule produce lubrication that helps with comfort during sexual activity and other body functions.

The clitoris is surrounded by a network of blood vessels and nerves that respond to touch, temperature, and pressure. This nerve network connects to the spinal cord and brain, which is why stimulation of the clitoris can create sensations throughout the body. The tissue is covered by several layers of protective skin and membranes that keep the sensitive interior safe from damage.

Takeaway: The clitoris is not simply the small external bump you might see. It's a substantial organ with visible and hidden parts that extend deep into the pelvis. Knowing this anatomy helps explain why different types of touch in different locations can produce different sensations and responses.

External Anatomy: What You Can See and Feel

The external portions of the clitoris are what you can observe and touch. The most noticeable part is the glans, which appears as a small rounded bump located at the top of the vulva, where the inner lips (labia minora) meet. In people who have gone through puberty, this area typically becomes more pronounced and may darken in color compared to surrounding skin. The glans can range in color from pink to brown to deep purple, and this variation is completely normal and has no medical significance.

Directly above the glans is the clitoral hood, a fold of skin that partially or fully covers the tip. This hood functions similarly to the foreskin on a penis—it protects sensitive tissue from friction and irritation. The amount of hood coverage varies greatly among individuals. Some people have a hood that completely covers the glans, while others have minimal coverage where most of the tip remains visible. Neither situation is abnormal or problematic.

Just below the glans, you can usually feel the shaft of the clitoris through the skin. If you gently press upward on the area above the glans, you may be able to feel a firm cord-like structure under the skin. This is the shaft, and its firmness comes from the erectile tissue inside. During sexual arousal, this tissue fills with blood and becomes more engorged, making the entire external clitoris larger and more prominent.

The visible clitoral area is surrounded by the labia minora (inner lips), which frame the clitoral region. These inner lips vary in size, color, and symmetry from person to person. Some people's inner lips are barely visible, while others extend beyond the outer lips. The skin of the labia minora is thinner and more delicate than outer skin, and it contains many nerve endings and oil glands that keep it moisturized.

Color changes in the external clitoral area are normal responses to arousal and hormone fluctuations. During sexual excitement, increased blood flow can make the clitoris and surrounding tissues appear darker or more swollen. During different phases of the menstrual cycle, the clitoris may appear slightly larger or smaller due to natural hormone changes. These variations are not signs of disease or dysfunction.

Takeaway: The external clitoris includes the glans (the tip), the hood (protective covering), and the shaft (the firm structure you can feel). All of these parts vary in appearance and size among different people, and this variation is entirely normal. Learning to recognize your own anatomy helps you understand your body's natural responses to touch and arousal.

Internal Anatomy: The Hidden Clitoral Structure

Most of the clitoral structure exists inside the body, hidden from view. This internal portion is substantial in size and complexity. The clitoral body extends upward from the glans into the pelvic area, angling backward at approximately a 45-degree angle. This internal section contains the same erectile tissue found in the external glans, meaning it also swells with blood during arousal and contains many nerve endings.

At the base of the clitoral body, the structure branches into two arms called the clitoral crura. These arms extend sideways and downward, one on each side of the vaginal opening. Each crus is several centimeters long and sits beneath the surface of the skin and muscle. During sexual arousal, these crura also become engorged with blood, contributing to overall swelling and sensitivity in the genital region. Some research suggests that stimulation in areas around these internal arms—such as the inner thighs or sides of the vaginal opening—can create pleasurable sensations through indirect stimulation of these deeper structures.

The clitoral body and crura are surrounded by erectile tissue called cavernous tissue (corpus cavernosum). This tissue has a spongy structure filled with small blood vessels. During arousal, these vessels fill with blood, causing the tissue to expand. This swelling is similar to what happens in a penis during arousal. After arousal subsides, the blood drains from the tissue and it returns to its normal size.

Recent imaging studies using ultrasound and MRI scans have revealed that the clitoral structure is even more complex than previously understood. The internal portion may be larger in some individuals than others, which could contribute to differences in how people experience pleasure and arousal. This anatomical variation is completely normal and doesn't indicate any problem or abnormality.

The internal clitoris connects to the rest of the vulva and pelvic structures through networks of nerves and blood vessels. These connections mean that stimulation in one area can affect sensations in nearby areas. For example, some people report that stimulation of the anterior vaginal wall (the wall closest to the front of the body) creates pleasurable sensations because this area may be close to internal clitoral tissue. Individual differences in these internal structures help explain why people have different preferences for types and locations of touch.

Takeaway: The internal clitoris is a substantial structure that extends deep into the pelvis in branching arms. This hidden portion contains erectile tissue that swells during arousal and contributes significantly to sexual response. Understanding that much of the clitoris is internal helps explain why people may experience pleasure from stimulation in areas that aren't directly touching the external tip.

Blood Vessels and Nerve Supply: How Sensation Works

The clitoris is one of the most nerve-rich areas of the human body. The glans alone contains approximately 8,000 nerve endings in a structure typically smaller than a pea. These nerve endings are specialized to detect different types of stimulation: light touch, firm pressure, temperature changes, and vibration. This extraordinary concentration of nerves explains why the clitoris is capable of such intense sensation compared to most other body parts.

The nerves of the clitoris come from three different sources, creating a complex and overlapping nerve network. The pudendal nerve provides sensation to most of the external clitoris and labia. The pelvic nerve carries sensations from deeper structures. The hypogastric nerve contributes nerves from
