Free Guide to Finding Saved Passwords on Windows

Understanding Windows Password Storage Basics

Windows stores passwords in several locations depending on which application or service created them. When you enter a password into your browser, email client, or system account, Windows typically saves that information so you don't have to type it repeatedly. This convenience feature stores credentials in encrypted form, though the encryption methods vary based on the application and Windows version.

The main places where Windows keeps password data include the Credential Manager (a built-in system tool), browser password vaults, email client storage, and Windows user account passwords. Each storage location works differently and requires different methods to view what's stored. Understanding where your passwords live helps you locate them when you've forgotten a password or need to transfer credentials to a new device.

Passwords stored through Windows Credential Manager are encrypted using your user account credentials. This means only you—while logged into your Windows account—can typically view them. Browser passwords often have their own encryption systems, which is why Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other browsers store them separately from Windows system passwords. Email clients like Outlook store passwords independently as well.

It's worth noting that password recovery becomes easier when you understand these storage systems. Many people assume their passwords are permanently lost, when in fact Windows provides built-in tools to retrieve them. This guide focuses on using those official Windows tools and methods.

Practical Takeaway: Recognize that Windows password storage happens across multiple systems—your main Windows account, your browser, and individual applications. Knowing where to look saves time when you need to find or recover a password.

Accessing Passwords Through Windows Credential Manager

Credential Manager is a Windows system tool that stores usernames and passwords for websites, network locations, and some applications. It's built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 and provides the most direct way to view passwords saved at the system level. Credential Manager separates stored credentials into two categories: Web Credentials (for websites and online services) and Windows Credentials (for network drives and other Windows services).

To open Credential Manager on Windows 10 or 11, click the Start button and type "Credential Manager" in the search box. Select "Credential Manager" from the results. Alternatively, you can reach it through Control Panel by going to User Accounts, then selecting Credential Manager from the left sidebar. Once open, you'll see two sections: "Web Credentials" and "Windows Credentials."

In the Web Credentials section, you'll see entries for various websites and services you've logged into. Each entry shows the username associated with that site. To view the password, click on the entry to expand it, then look for a "Show" button or link. Windows will ask you to confirm your current user account password—this security step confirms that you're authorized to view these credentials. After entering your password, the stored password for that website becomes visible.

Windows Credentials work similarly but typically store login information for network resources rather than websites. These might include credentials for mapped network drives or remote desktop connections. The process for viewing them is identical: expand the entry and use the "Show" option to reveal the password.

One limitation to understand: Credential Manager only shows passwords that were explicitly saved through Windows prompts. If you saved a password directly in a browser like Chrome or Firefox without using Windows' credential system, that password won't appear in Credential Manager—you'd need to access it through the browser instead.

Practical Takeaway: Credential Manager provides a centralized location for many saved passwords. Open it, find your entry, expand it, and click "Show" to reveal the password after confirming your Windows user password.

Retrieving Passwords Saved in Web Browsers

Most people save passwords in their web browser rather than in Windows Credential Manager. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and other browsers maintain their own password vaults with encryption. Each browser handles password storage differently, which means accessing saved passwords requires visiting that browser's specific settings.

In Google Chrome, saved passwords are found in Settings under the Autofill section. Click Settings, then navigate to Autofill and passwords, and select Password manager. Here you'll see all websites where you've saved login credentials. Clicking on any entry reveals the username, and clicking the eye icon next to the password field will show the actual password (after Windows confirms your user account password). Chrome also allows you to export your passwords as a CSV file if you need to transfer them elsewhere.

Microsoft Edge follows a similar process. Open Edge, go to Settings, select Passwords, and then view saved passwords. The interface is nearly identical to Chrome, with an eye icon to reveal passwords. Since Edge uses a similar system to Chrome (both are Chromium-based browsers), the experience feels familiar.

Firefox stores passwords in a file called "logins.json" on your computer. To view saved Firefox passwords, open Firefox and go to Settings, then Privacy & Security. Under the Logins and Passwords section, click "Saved Logins." This opens a window showing all stored credentials. Like Chrome and Edge, Firefox requires you to confirm your Windows password before displaying any saved passwords on screen.

Safari on Windows (if you have it installed) stores passwords differently, accessing the Windows credential system more directly. However, if you're using Safari on Mac, passwords are stored in Keychain, which requires accessing Mac system preferences instead.

It's important to know that browser password exports create plain-text files containing all your credentials. Export this data only if you absolutely need it, and handle the exported file carefully. Storing this file on a USB drive or uploading it to a cloud service creates security risks, so many experts recommend avoiding exports unless the situation demands it.

Practical Takeaway: Most saved passwords live in your browser, not Windows itself. Access them through each browser's settings menu, then use the eye icon or "Show" option to reveal the password after confirming your user account credentials.

Finding Email and Application Passwords

Beyond browsers and Windows Credential Manager, passwords may be stored within email clients and other applications. Outlook, Gmail's desktop client, Thunderbird, and other email programs often store login credentials separately. These passwords function differently from browser passwords and require accessing each application's specific settings.

In Microsoft Outlook, stored email passwords are managed through Account Settings. Open Outlook, go to File, then Account Settings, and select Account Settings again from the dropdown menu. Find your email account in the list and click it, then click "Change." The dialog that appears should show your username and password (though the password often appears as dots for security). Some versions of Outlook store passwords within Windows Credential Manager, so checking Credential Manager first is worthwhile.

For other email services accessed through desktop clients, the process varies. Gmail desktop client, for instance, stores credentials differently depending on whether it's using Google's proprietary client or a third-party application. If you access Gmail through third-party applications, those apps may have their own password settings separate from Gmail itself.

VPN applications, remote desktop software, FTP clients, and specialized work applications often maintain their own password storage. These passwords rarely appear in Credential Manager because they're not system-level credentials. Instead, they're stored within the application's configuration files. Accessing these passwords typically requires opening the application's settings or preferences menu and looking for a "Saved Passwords," "Credentials," or "Account" section.

Some applications encrypt passwords in a way that makes them impossible to view even by you—a deliberate security feature. In these cases, the only option is to reset the password through the application or the service it connects to. If an application won't show you the password, check whether there's a "Change Password" or "Reset" option instead.

It's also worth checking your password reset email if you can't locate a saved password. Most modern services allow password resets through email verification, which is often faster than hunting through multiple applications for stored credentials.

Practical Takeaway: Email clients and specialized applications store passwords separately from browsers and Windows. Check each application's settings or preferences menu for an account, credentials, or password section.

Recovering Windows User Account Passwords

If you've forgotten your Windows user account password—the password you use to log into Windows itself—recovery works differently from finding saved passwords. Windows doesn't store this password anywhere you can view; instead, it stores a encrypted hash that cannot be reversed to reveal the original password. This means you cannot look up your Windows logon password the way you might retrieve a browser password.
