Free Guide to Installing Linux on Your Computer

What Linux Is and Why People Use It

Linux is a free operating system that runs computers and devices around the world. An operating system is the software that makes your computer work — it manages your files, runs programs, and lets you connect to the internet. Windows and macOS are operating systems you may know about. Linux is different because anyone can use it, change it, and share it for free.

Linux started in 1991 when a student named Linus Torvalds created it as a hobby project. Today, Linux powers about 96% of the world's servers that run websites and online services. Major companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Netflix rely on Linux to operate. This widespread use means Linux has strong security updates and lots of people working to improve it.

People choose Linux for several reasons. First, it costs nothing. You won't pay licensing fees like you might with Windows or macOS. Second, it is open-source, which means the code that makes it work is public. Anyone can read it, study it, and report security problems. Third, Linux gives you control. You can change almost anything about how it works, from the appearance to the core functions. Fourth, it is lightweight. Linux runs well on older computers that might struggle with newer versions of Windows.

Linux comes in many versions called distributions or "distros." Each distro packages Linux with different tools and programs. Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and Linux Mint are popular distros designed for regular computer users. Others like CentOS focus on servers. This variety means you can pick a version that matches your needs and skill level.

Practical takeaway: Linux is a legitimate, widely-used operating system maintained by large organizations and communities. Understanding what it is helps you decide if installing it makes sense for your situation.

System Requirements and Preparation Steps

Before installing Linux, check whether your computer meets the basic requirements. Most modern Linux distros need at least 2 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM), though 4 GB or more is preferable for comfortable use. They typically require 20-50 GB of disk space depending on which distro and programs you plan to use. Your processor (CPU) should be from roughly 2007 or newer, though older machines can sometimes run lighter versions of Linux like Lubuntu or Puppy Linux.

You will need to create installation media. This is usually a USB flash drive or DVD that contains the Linux operating system files. To create installation media, you need a second computer that already has an operating system working. You will also need a USB flash drive with at least 4-8 GB of storage space, or a blank DVD. The process involves obtaining the Linux distro files and writing them to your USB or DVD using special software.

Backing up your data is a critical step before any installation. Even if you plan to keep your current operating system, something can go wrong during the process. Copy your important files to an external drive, cloud storage, or another computer. This includes documents, photos, videos, and any other files you value. The installation process will delete data from the disk you are working with, so protection beforehand is essential.

You should also decide how you want to set up Linux. Some people replace their current operating system entirely. Others use dual-boot, which means both Linux and their original system stay on the computer, and they choose which one to use when turning on the machine. Others run Linux inside a virtual machine, which is like running a computer within your computer using software. Virtual machines are the safest option for beginners because they do not change your main system.

Write down your computer's hardware information before starting. Check your RAM amount, disk size, processor type, and graphics card model. On Windows, you can find this in System Settings. On macOS, click the Apple menu and select About This Mac. This information helps you troubleshoot if problems occur and ensures your hardware will work with your chosen distro.

Practical takeaway: Spend time preparing by backing up data, checking hardware, and choosing your installation method. Preparation prevents data loss and makes the actual installation smoother.

Choosing a Linux Distribution for Your Needs

Linux distributions vary in complexity, design, and purpose. Ubuntu is the most popular choice for new Linux users. It is based on Debian, another long-established distro, and Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) provides regular updates and support. Ubuntu releases new versions every six months, with a major update every two years that receives five years of support. Ubuntu has a large community online, so finding answers to questions is straightforward.

Linux Mint is another beginner-friendly option. It emphasizes a familiar, Windows-like interface that many people find intuitive. Mint includes multimedia software pre-installed, which is helpful if you want to watch videos or listen to music without extra setup. Mint updates less frequently than Ubuntu, which some users prefer because their system changes less often.

Fedora is suitable for users willing to learn more technical details. It updates every six months and focuses on newer software and technologies. Fedora runs on computers owned by many software developers and engineers. If you want to stay current with the latest tools and don't mind occasionally troubleshooting problems, Fedora might appeal to you.

Debian is one of the oldest Linux distributions, first released in 1993. It prioritizes stability and reliability over having the newest features. Debian is often used on servers because it rarely breaks. If you value a system that works consistently without frequent changes, Debian is worth considering.

Elementary OS focuses on design and visual appeal. It aims to feel polished and beautiful while remaining simple to use. Elementary OS works well if you want a Linux system that is pleasant to look at and responsive to use.

For older or less powerful computers, consider Linux Mint with the Xfce desktop, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, or Puppy Linux. These versions use fewer resources and run smoothly on machines with limited RAM or older processors. They sacrifice some visual effects but provide functional, usable systems.

Practical takeaway: Choose Ubuntu or Linux Mint if you are new to Linux. Both have extensive support communities and straightforward interfaces. Research your specific distro's requirements and philosophy to match it to your comfort level and hardware.

Creating Installation Media and Starting the Installation

Creating a bootable USB drive or DVD is the first hands-on step. Start by obtaining the installation files. Visit the official website of your chosen distro and find the "Download" section. This will offer an ISO file, which is a compressed image containing everything needed to install Linux. Ubuntu's website, for example, lists download links prominently on ubuntu.com. Select the right version for your computer architecture — most modern computers use 64-bit, though some older machines need 32-bit versions.

Once you have the ISO file, you need to write it to your USB drive using special software. This is different from simply copying the file. Popular tools for this include Balena Etcher, which works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Etcher is straightforward: you select your ISO file, select your USB drive, and click Flash. The software writes the Linux system to the drive in a way that makes it bootable, meaning your computer can start from it.

On Windows, you can also use Rufus, which is lightweight and fast. On macOS, Etcher is recommended. The process typically takes 5-15 minutes depending on your USB drive speed. During this time, do not unplug the drive or turn off the computer.

After creating your bootable media, insert it into the computer where you want to install Linux. Restart that computer. As it powers on, watch for a message telling you to press a key to enter the boot menu — this might say "Press F12 to Select Boot Device" or similar. The key varies by manufacturer; common options are F12, F2, Delete, or Escape. This step is crucial because it tells your computer to start from the USB drive instead of your regular hard drive.

Once you boot from the USB, you will see the Linux installation screen. Most distros let you try the system first before installing it. This "live session" lets you explore Linux without making any changes. You can click on a desktop icon or menu button to launch the actual installer when ready. The installer will walk you through steps including language selection, keyboard layout, timezone, disk partitioning, and user account creation.

Practical takeaway: Use Balena Etcher or Rufus to create your boot
