What You Should Know About the LSAT Before You Start Studying

The LSAT (Law School Admission Test) is a standardized test that law schools use to evaluate applicants. It measures reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and analytical skills. Understanding what the test actually covers will help you prepare more effectively and set realistic expectations for your study timeline.

The LSAT contains three main question types. Reading Comprehension sections require you to read passages from humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and law-related materials, then answer questions about what you've read. Logical Reasoning sections present short arguments and ask you to identify logical flaws, draw conclusions, or evaluate reasoning. The Logic Games section (also called Analytical Reasoning) tests your ability to organize information and understand complex relationships between variables.

According to the Law School Admission Council, the LSAT is scored on a scale from 120 to 180. Most test-takers score between 140 and 160. The average score is around 150. Understanding where you fall on this scale matters because different law schools have different median LSAT scores. For example, law schools ranked in the top 14 nationally typically have median scores above 160, while many regional schools have medians in the 145-155 range. Your target score should depend on which schools interest you.

The test currently takes about 3 hours and 35 minutes, though the LSAC introduced changes to shorten it to approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes starting in 2024. You'll have time to review your answers within each section, but you cannot go back to previous sections. The test is offered multiple times per year—typically about 10 times annually—so you have flexibility in choosing when to take it.

Practical takeaway: Before starting study materials, visit the official LSAC website to review sample questions and understand the exact format of each section. This prevents wasting time on materials that don't match the actual test structure.

Understanding Your Starting Point: Diagnostic Testing and Realistic Timelines

Taking a diagnostic test before you begin focused studying reveals your baseline performance and helps you identify which areas need the most work. A diagnostic test is simply a full, timed LSAT administered under test-like conditions—meaning you use only the time allotted and take breaks as you would on test day. This shows you where you actually stand, not where you hope to stand.

Most people benefit from studying for 3 to 6 months before taking the LSAT, though this varies significantly based on starting score and target score. If your diagnostic score is 145 and you want to reach 160, you're aiming for a 15-point improvement. Research shows that moving from the 50th percentile to the 75th percentile typically requires 150 to 300 hours of focused study. If you study 10 hours per week, that's 4-7 months. Someone starting at 155 aiming for 165 may need less time because smaller improvements often require fewer hours.

Your diagnostic test also reveals your problem areas. Some people naturally excel at reading comprehension but struggle with logic games. Others find logical reasoning intuitive but get bogged down in game setup. Your practice pattern should reflect these patterns. If you score well on one section already, spending equal time on all three sections wastes your effort. Instead, invest most of your time in the sections where you're weakest.

The diagnostic test also serves as a motivation tool and a baseline for measuring progress. When you score 10 points higher on a practice test two months into studying, you have concrete evidence that your strategy is working. This matters psychologically when preparing for a demanding test.

Official LSAC practice tests are the gold standard for diagnostics because they use actual retired LSAT questions. Free sample questions appear on the LSAC website. Several reputable test prep companies also offer free full-length practice tests that you can use as a diagnostic, though official tests remain most representative of actual test conditions.

Practical takeaway: Take one full diagnostic test under timed conditions before buying study materials. Use your score to set a realistic target and calculate how many study hours you likely need. Schedule your LSAT test date accordingly—aiming for one month after your practice test scores reach your target.

Building Your Reading Comprehension Skills

Reading Comprehension on the LSAT differs from reading you do in everyday life. You're not reading for leisure or to absorb all details. You're reading strategically to answer specific questions efficiently. The four passages on the LSAT come from academic and professional sources, and the questions test whether you understood the passage's main idea, supporting arguments, tone, and logical structure.

The most common mistakes on Reading Comprehension stem from reading too slowly, missing the author's main point, or getting distracted by interesting details that the test doesn't ask about. You have roughly 8-9 minutes per passage, which seems tight initially but becomes manageable with practice. The goal isn't to understand every detail—it's to answer the questions correctly.

A practical strategy involves active reading. Before diving into questions, read the passage once, identifying its main argument and how it's structured. Mark up the passage lightly—circle keywords, underline the main idea, note where the author shifts arguments. This takes 3-4 minutes and reduces the time you spend searching for answers later. Many test-takers skip reading the entire passage and jump straight to questions, trying to answer by scanning. This often backfires because you miss context and make careless errors.

Question types vary and require different skills. Main idea questions ask about the passage's overall point. Detail questions ask you to locate specific information. Inference questions ask what can logically be concluded from information stated in the passage. Tone questions ask how the author feels. Author's purpose questions ask why the author included certain information. Logical reasoning questions ask you to identify how the passage supports a conclusion. By practicing all question types, you develop the ability to recognize what each question is really asking—this recognition alone improves accuracy.

Building a personal vocab list helps with difficult passages. When you encounter an unfamiliar word that appears in a question or passage, add it to a running list and review it periodically. The LSAT doesn't test obscure vocabulary primarily, but certain academic and legal terms appear repeatedly. Words like "ambiguous," "tenuous," "refute," and "analogous" show up frequently across practice tests.

Practical takeaway: Practice with at least 10 different Reading Comprehension passages from official LSAT materials. Time yourself at 8 minutes per passage, then review your answers by re-reading relevant sections. Track which question types you miss most often—this is your focus area.

Mastering Logical Reasoning: Arguments and Flaws

Logical Reasoning makes up roughly half your LSAT score (two sections on a standard test), so improving here yields the biggest score gains. These sections present short arguments—usually a paragraph or two—and ask you to identify what the argument assumes, what would weaken it, what would strengthen it, or what logical flaw it contains. Unlike Reading Comprehension, you're not absorbing information. You're actively analyzing how the argument works.

Most Logical Reasoning arguments follow a pattern: a premise or set of premises (statements the author treats as true) leading to a conclusion (what the author claims follows from those premises). Your job is to understand the gap between what's stated and what's concluded. This gap is where logical flaws hide.

Common argument flaws appear repeatedly. An author might confuse correlation with causation—assuming that because two things happen together, one caused the other. Another might use circular reasoning, where the conclusion restates the premise without actual support. Others commit the "appeal to authority" flaw, assuming something is true because an expert said so without examining the expert's actual evidence. Identifying these patterns in practice makes spotting them on test day much faster.

Strengthen and weaken questions are among the most common. A strengthen question asks what information, if true, would help the argument. A weaken question asks what would hurt the argument. These seem opposite, but they require the same skill: understanding exactly what the argument depends on. If an argument depends on the assumption that all dolphins are mammals, an answer choice that provides evidence dolphins are mammals strengthens the argument, while an answer choice suggesting some dolphins aren't mammals weakens it.
