Understanding Patio Door Coverings and Your Options

Patio doors bring natural light and views into your home, but they also present unique challenges when it comes to window treatments. Unlike standard windows, patio doors need coverings that are functional, durable, and easy to operate while you're moving in and out. This guide explores the main categories of window coverings designed specifically for patio door installations, so you can understand what's available and how each type works.

The right patio door covering depends on several factors: how much light control you need, your privacy requirements, your budget, the climate where you live, and how frequently you use the door. Some coverings work better for doors you use daily, while others suit doors that remain mostly stationary. Understanding the characteristics of each type helps you make informed decisions about what might work in your specific situation.

Patio doors typically measure between 36 and 48 inches wide and stand 80 to 96 inches tall, making them significantly larger than standard windows. This size means any covering you choose must be sturdy enough to handle repeated raising and lowering, opening and closing, or sliding and stacking. Materials that work fine on a small bedroom window may sag, break, or wear out quickly when used on a patio door over time.

Before selecting a covering, measure your patio door opening carefully. Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the frame, since older homes sometimes have frames that aren't perfectly square. Note the depth of your door frame—how far the trim extends from the wall. This measurement determines whether you can mount a covering inside the frame or need to mount it on the wall or ceiling outside the frame.

Practical Takeaway: Start by identifying your primary need: Do you want light control, privacy, insulation, or a combination? This will narrow your options significantly and guide your research toward the most suitable coverings for your patio doors.

Vertical Blinds: The Traditional Patio Door Solution

Vertical blinds remain one of the most common coverings for patio doors, and for good reason. They slide from side to side rather than raising and lowering, which makes them well-suited to the width of patio doors. The slats hang vertically and can be opened completely to one side or the other, giving you full access to the door opening when you need it. Each slat typically measures between 3.5 and 4 inches wide.

Vertical blinds work by running on a track system. A headrail attaches to the top of the door frame or wall, and individual slats slide along this track using a carrier system. You control them with a wand or cord that rotates the slats to control light and privacy, and a separate control moves the entire set of slats to open or close. Quality matters significantly with vertical blinds—cheaper versions may have carriers that stick or slats that warp after exposure to sunlight.

Materials for vertical blinds range from PVC plastic to aluminum to fabric. PVC is typically the most budget-friendly option, ranging from $200 to $400 for a standard patio door opening. It resists moisture well, which makes it suitable for doors near kitchens or in humid climates. Aluminum slats cost more, typically $300 to $600, but provide a more contemporary look and slightly better durability. Fabric vertical blinds, which cover the entire slat rather than being hollow, range from $400 to $1,000 or more and offer better light filtering and a softer appearance.

The main drawback of vertical blinds is that dust accumulates on top of the slats and the headrail. Cleaning requires periodic vacuuming or wiping with a damp cloth. Additionally, if you have pets or children, there's a potential safety concern with dangling cords or wands. Modern versions often feature cordless or motorized options that eliminate this concern, though these cost significantly more—typically $600 to $1,500 for a motorized system.

Vertical blinds typically last 5 to 7 years with normal use, though this varies based on quality and climate. In very hot, sunny climates, PVC slats may become brittle or discolored faster. In humid coastal areas, even quality vertical blinds may show wear sooner.

Practical Takeaway: If you want an affordable, traditional option that provides full door access and decent light control, vertical blinds remain a viable choice. Plan for periodic cleaning and consider cordless options if you have young children or pets.

Cellular Shades and Honeycomb Blinds for Insulation

Cellular shades, also called honeycomb blinds, feature a unique construction with hollow cells that trap air. This design makes them one of the most energy-efficient window covering options available. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, cellular shades can reduce heat loss through windows by 20 percent to 30 percent in winter and keep heat out in summer, which may help reduce heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

These shades work well on patio doors when configured with a top-down, bottom-up mechanism that allows you to lower the shade from the top or raise it from the bottom. This lets you maintain privacy while still allowing light to enter the upper portion of the door. Some models feature a single cell construction, while premium versions use double or even triple cells for greater insulation. The more cells, the better the insulation—but also the higher the cost and the heavier the shade.

Cellular shades typically cost between $300 and $800 for a standard patio door, depending on materials and features. Single-cell shades run around $300 to $450, double-cell shades cost $450 to $650, and premium triple-cell options range from $600 to $900. Motorized versions add $200 to $400 to the base price. While this is more expensive than vertical blinds, the energy savings can offset the investment over time, particularly in climates with significant heating or cooling demands.

The main limitation of cellular shades on patio doors is that they raise and lower vertically, which means you sacrifice some of the full-door access that sliding coverings provide. If you use your patio door frequently, this may be inconvenient. Some people solve this by combining cellular shades with lightweight curtains that can be swept aside when the door is in use. Another consideration is material durability—fabric cellular shades can be damaged by moisture in very humid environments or near doors that open to damp patios.

Installation matters significantly with cellular shades on patio doors. Inside-the-frame mounting keeps the shade contained but may reduce the usable door width slightly. Outside-the-frame mounting avoids this issue but requires careful measurement to ensure the shade doesn't interfere with the door handles or hardware. Many professionals recommend outside mounting for patio doors that receive regular use.

Practical Takeaway: If energy efficiency and insulation matter to you, cellular shades offer real benefits. Plan for the reduced door access, and consider whether a top-down, bottom-up configuration would work with your daily routine and door usage patterns.

Sliding Panels and Panel Track Blinds

Panel track blinds, sometimes called sliding panels or panel blinds, represent a more modern approach to patio door coverings. These consist of large fabric panels that slide along a track system, similar to vertical blinds but with much wider panels. Typically, panels measure 24 to 27 inches wide, so a standard patio door requires two to four panels depending on the opening width. Each panel can slide independently or be paired together.

This style offers several advantages over traditional vertical blinds. The larger panel size creates a more seamless, contemporary appearance. Panels provide better light blocking than vertical blinds when closed, since there's no space between individual slats. They also come in a wider variety of fabrics and colors, which appeals to people who want their patio door covering to coordinate with interior design. Fabric options range from simple solid colors to patterns, textures, and semi-sheer materials that filter light while maintaining privacy.

Pricing for panel track blinds typically ranges from $400 to $1,200 for a standard patio door opening, depending on fabric choice and whether you select motorized operation. Basic fabric panels cost $400 to $700, while premium designer fabrics can run $700 to $1,200 or more. Motorized systems add $300 to $500. Installation usually runs $150 to $300 if you hire
