Understanding Akron Public Utilities and Your Bill
Akron Public Utilities (APU) provides water, wastewater, and stormwater services to residents and businesses in Akron, Ohio. The utility serves approximately 400,000 people across the city and surrounding areas. When you receive your monthly bill, it reflects the services APU has provided to your property during the billing period, which typically runs for 30 to 31 days.

Your bill includes several components. The water charge covers the treatment and delivery of safe drinking water to your home or business. This is measured in hundred-cubic-foot units, commonly called CCF or HCF. One CCF equals approximately 748 gallons. The wastewater charge covers the treatment of water that leaves your property through drains and toilets. This charge is typically based on the amount of water you use, since most water that enters your home also leaves through the sewer system. Stormwater charges help fund the management of rainwater runoff in the city.
APU calculates charges based on meter readings taken at your property. A meter reader visits your location monthly, or you may have a smart meter that transmits readings electronically. The bill shows your current meter reading, previous meter reading, and the difference between them, which represents your usage. Understanding these basic components helps you recognize what you are paying for and identify any unusual charges or usage patterns.
Your bill also may include taxes and fees set by the city of Akron. These are separate line items that fund city services and infrastructure maintenance. The total amount due is clearly stated on your bill, along with the due date and available payment methods.
Practical takeaway: Review your bill each month and keep past bills for comparison. If your usage or charges seem unusually high, check for leaks in your home, changes in household occupancy, or new appliances that may increase water consumption.
Payment Methods and Online Account Management
Akron Public Utilities offers multiple ways to pay your bill. The most common method is online payment through the APU website. To access your account online, visit the APU website and look for the "Pay Your Bill" or "Customer Portal" section. You will need your account number, which appears on your bill, to log in or create an account. The online portal allows you to view your current bill, payment history, and previous bills going back several years.

Through the online portal, you can pay your bill using a debit card, credit card, or bank account transfer. Payment through debit or credit card may incur a processing fee, typically between 2 and 3 percent of the payment amount. Bank account transfers through electronic check (ACH) usually have no fee or a lower fee than card payments. The online system processes payments immediately or within one business day, depending on the payment method and time of day you submit the payment.
Phone payment is another option. You can call the APU customer service line to speak with a representative who will take your payment information over the phone. This method is useful if you have questions about your bill or need assistance with your account while making a payment. The customer service number appears on your bill.
Mail payment remains available for those who prefer this traditional method. Write your account number on the check and mail it to the address listed on your bill. Allow 7 to 10 business days for a mailed check to be received and processed. Include only the payment coupon from your bill with your check to ensure proper credit to your account.
In-person payment can be made at designated payment centers or kiosks in the Akron area. These locations accept cash, check, and debit card payments. Check your bill or the APU website for the current locations and hours of operation of payment centers near you.
Practical takeaway: Set up automatic payments from your bank account to avoid late payments and maintain a consistent payment schedule. Automatic payments can be scheduled for the due date each month through the online portal or by calling customer service.
Understanding Your Usage and Rates
Water rates in Akron are structured on a tiered system, meaning the rate per unit of water increases as you use more. This pricing structure encourages conservation by making higher usage more expensive. As of recent rate information, residential customers pay one rate for the first tier of usage and a higher rate for consumption above that threshold. The specific rates change periodically, so check your bill or the APU website for current pricing.

A typical household in Akron uses between 40 and 60 CCF per month, which equals roughly 30,000 to 45,000 gallons. This translates to an average monthly bill of $40 to $80 for water and wastewater combined, though bills vary based on household size, water use habits, and local rates. Families with more people, outdoor irrigation, or water-heavy activities will have higher usage and larger bills.
Seasonal variations affect usage patterns. Many customers use more water during warmer months for outdoor watering, filling pools, or washing vehicles. Winter months typically show lower usage unless there are water leaks or additional indoor activities. Reviewing your usage over a 12-month period gives you a better picture of your typical consumption and helps identify unusual months.
Several factors influence household water usage. The number of people in your home, the age and efficiency of your fixtures, and your daily habits all matter. A running toilet can waste 200 gallons daily. A leaky faucet can waste 3,000 gallons per year. Older showerheads use more water than modern low-flow models. Washing clothes and dishes with full loads rather than partial loads reduces overall water consumption.
Commercial and industrial customers pay different rates based on their usage volume and the nature of their business. Large users may negotiate rates or arrangements with APU. Non-profit organizations sometimes receive special rate consideration.
Practical takeaway: Track your monthly usage to establish a baseline. If a month shows usage 20 percent or more above your normal amount, investigate for leaks or unusual activity. A simple way to check for leaks is to read your meter, wait two hours without using water, then read it again. If the meter has moved, you likely have a leak.
Dealing with High Bills and Billing Issues
If your bill is significantly higher than usual, several causes are possible. The most common reason is a water leak inside or outside your home. Leaks under the foundation, in the yard, or inside walls often go unnoticed but consume large amounts of water. You may not see visible signs of leaking water, but your meter will record the usage. A plumber can inspect your home for hidden leaks if you suspect this problem.

Meter reading errors occasionally occur, though modern automated meter reading systems have reduced this issue substantially. If you believe your meter was read incorrectly, contact APU to request a meter re-read. Provide your account number and explain why you think there is an error. APU will typically schedule a technician to read the meter in your presence or verify the reading remotely. If an error is found, APU will adjust your bill accordingly.
Changes in your household can naturally increase water usage. Adding a family member, allowing a guest to stay for an extended period, or increased outdoor activities will raise your consumption. Seasonal factors also play a role. Filling a hot tub, installing a water feature, or watering a lawn during dry seasons can double or triple normal usage.
Billing disputes should be reported to APU's customer service department. Explain the issue clearly and provide information about when you first noticed the problem. Keep copies of your bills and any correspondence with APU. Most disputes are resolved within 30 days through investigation and meter re-reading.
If you cannot pay a bill due to financial hardship, contact APU before your account becomes overdue. Some payment arrangements or programs may be discussed with a customer service representative. Letting an account go unpaid without communication will result in late fees and eventual service disconnection.
Practical takeaway: Document your meter readings monthly and photograph your water meter if possible. Maintain a simple log of your bills and usage patterns. This record becomes valuable if you need to dispute a charge or identify trends.
Late Payments, Disconnections, and Account Reinstatement
Akron Public Utilities charges a late fee when a bill is not paid by the due date. The late fee percentage is set by city ordinance and appears on your bill. Late fees accumulate if payment continues to be delayed. In addition to the
