Free Guide to Renting a Car Tow Dolly
Understanding Tow Dolly Rentals: What They Are and How They Work
A tow dolly is a trailer designed to tow a vehicle by lifting its front or rear wheels off the ground while the other two wheels roll freely on the road. Unlike a full enclosed trailer that carries an entire vehicle, a tow dolly only supports two wheels, making it lighter and more affordable to rent. The vehicle being towed remains partially on the ground, with either the front or back end suspended on the dolly's platform.

Tow dollies come in different configurations depending on the vehicle being towed. Front-wheel tow dollies lift the front wheels of a car onto the platform, allowing the rear wheels to remain on the road. This works well for front-wheel-drive vehicles. Rear-wheel tow dollies work the opposite way, lifting the rear wheels. Some vehicles require specific towing methods based on their drivetrain and transmission type to prevent damage.
The typical tow dolly rental costs between $40 and $75 per day at major rental companies like U-Haul, Home Depot, or Penske, though prices vary by location and season. Weekly rentals often reduce the daily rate. Most tow dollies weigh 1,200 to 1,500 pounds and require a towing vehicle with sufficient capacity, usually at least 3,500 pounds of towing capacity, though heavier vehicles need more.
Common situations where people rent tow dollies include relocating to a new city with two vehicles, transporting a non-running vehicle to a mechanic, or moving a second car during a long-distance move. The rental process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes and requires a valid driver's license and credit card. Most rental agencies allow rentals for as few as one day or as long as several weeks.
Practical Takeaway: Before renting, confirm your towing vehicle's capacity by checking the owner's manual or door jamb sticker, and determine whether your vehicle to be towed requires front or rear-wheel towing based on its drivetrain type.
Choosing the Right Rental Company and Location
Several national companies offer tow dolly rentals with locations across the United States. U-Haul operates over 21,000 rental locations and typically charges $35 to $60 per day for tow dollies. Home Depot's tool rental section partners with third-party providers and offers competitive daily rates, usually between $40 and $70. Penske Truck Rental provides tow dollies at approximately 500 locations with rates ranging from $45 to $80 per day. Budget Truck Rental and local independent rental shops also offer tow dollies, often with rates comparable to larger chains.

Location choice affects both price and convenience. Urban areas typically have multiple rental options within a short distance, while rural areas may have limited availability. Booking in advance during peak moving season (May through September) helps secure the equipment you need, as tow dollies have limited quantities compared to trailers. Many companies allow online reservations that you can confirm by phone or in person.
Comparing prices across companies matters because rates vary significantly based on local demand and inventory. A tow dolly that costs $50 per day at one location might cost $65 at another location just 20 miles away. Using company websites or calling directly provides current pricing. Some rental companies offer discount codes for extended rentals (seven days or more) or military discounts, which may save 10 to 15 percent on your total rental cost.
Consider the rental location's operating hours, especially if you need to pick up or return equipment outside standard business hours. Some U-Haul locations offer 24-hour self-service returns, while other companies may require daytime returns. Location convenience also includes proximity to highways if you're beginning a long-distance tow.
Practical Takeaway: Call three to five rental companies in your area, provide your specific rental dates, and compare total costs including any mileage fees or damage waivers before making a reservation.
Rental Requirements, Documentation, and Costs
Renting a tow dolly requires meeting basic requirements that all major rental companies enforce. You must be at least 18 years old (though some companies require 21) and present a valid government-issued driver's license. A credit card in your name is necessary for the security deposit, which typically ranges from $200 to $500. This deposit protects the rental company against damage and is refunded when you return the equipment in acceptable condition.

Most companies require proof of vehicle registration and insurance. You'll need the current registration for the vehicle you'll be towing and proof of insurance. The towing vehicle must be in roadworthy condition with working brakes and lights. Some rental companies inspect your towing vehicle before approving the rental to verify it has adequate capacity and mechanical condition.
Understanding the total cost structure prevents surprises at checkout. The daily rental rate is the primary cost, but additional charges may apply. Mileage fees typically range from $0.25 to $0.50 per mile, though some companies offer unlimited mileage for long-distance rentals. Late return fees (typically $10 to $30 per hour after the return time) can add significantly if you exceed your rental period. Damage waiver coverage, usually $15 to $25 per day, is optional but recommended.
For example, a three-day rental in a moderate-sized city might break down as: $50 per day rental ($150 total), $0.35 per mile for 600 miles ($210), and a damage waiver at $20 per day ($60), totaling approximately $420. Without the damage waiver, you could be financially responsible for any damage, which can exceed $1,500 for significant repairs or replacement parts.
Practical Takeaway: Ask the rental company for a written quote that itemizes the daily rate, mileage charges, damage waiver cost, and any other fees before committing to the rental.
Safety Checks and Proper Equipment Setup
Before leaving the rental facility with a tow dolly, conduct thorough safety checks to prevent accidents and ensure the equipment functions correctly. First, inspect the dolly's structural integrity by looking for cracks in the frame, bent metal, or damage to the towing tongue. Check all tires for proper inflation (usually indicated on the dolly's frame), signs of excessive wear, or visible damage. Test the brake lights and turn signals by connecting them to your vehicle and having someone verify the lights work from behind.

Examine the safety chains, which are critical backup connections between your tow vehicle and the dolly. Chains should have no visible damage, rust, or weak links. Verify that the coupler (the hitch connection) matches your vehicle's hitch type and ball size—typically 1-7/8 inches, 2 inches, or 2-5/16 inches. A mismatched coupler and ball combination can separate during driving and cause loss of the towed vehicle.
Wheel securing straps must be in good condition with no fraying or worn material. These straps hold the towed vehicle's wheels firmly to the dolly platform and prevent side-to-side movement. Before driving, ensure the towed vehicle is properly centered on the dolly with weight distributed evenly. Most dollies can only safely transport one vehicle at a time.
The dolly's lighting system requires specific attention. All tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals must work properly. Most tow dollies use a seven-pin connector or similar electrical system that plugs into your vehicle's hitch connector. Verify this connection is secure and doesn't pull free when moved by hand. If any lights don't function, notify the rental company before leaving—driving without proper lighting is illegal and dangerous.
Practical Takeaway: Create a written checklist of safety items to inspect and bring photos of any damage you notice before leaving the rental facility, keeping documentation of the dolly's condition at pickup time.
Towing Techniques and Road Safety Practices
Towing a vehicle on a dolly significantly changes your vehicle's handling characteristics and requires adjusted driving techniques. Your towing vehicle's braking distance increases substantially—a vehicle that normally stops in 100 feet may require 150 feet or more when towing. Accelerate slowly and smoothly to avoid jerking the dolly, which can strain the coupler and safety chains. De
