Understanding Your Shower Head: Types and How They Work

A shower head is the fixture at the end of your shower arm that sprays water over your body. Most people don't think much about their shower head until it stops working properly or they want to change how it feels. Understanding the different types available can help you make a decision about what might work best for your bathroom.

The most common type is the fixed shower head, which is mounted directly to the wall or ceiling and cannot move. These typically have a wide spray pattern and come in various shapes and sizes. Another popular option is the rainfall shower head, which mimics the feeling of standing in rain. These are larger and create a gentler, more dispersed water flow. Handheld shower heads are connected to a flexible hose and can be held in your hand or mounted on a bracket, offering flexibility for washing different areas or cleaning the shower itself.

Adjustable shower heads let you change the spray pattern between different settings—such as a concentrated stream, a wide mist, or a massage setting. Low-flow or water-saving shower heads reduce water consumption while still providing adequate pressure. These typically use aerators, which mix air into the water stream to maintain pressure while using less water. Some shower heads combine multiple features, such as a rainfall design with adjustable settings.

Federal regulations in the United States require shower heads to use no more than 2.5 gallons per minute at 80 pounds per square inch of water pressure. This standard has been in place since 1992. Despite this regulation, older shower heads or those installed before this requirement may use more water. Understanding this can help you see why replacing an old shower head might reduce your water bill over time.

Practical Takeaway: Visit a hardware store or browse online to see different shower head types in person or in photos. Think about what spray patterns appeal to you and whether features like adjustability or water conservation matter for your situation.

Tools and Materials You'll Need

Replacing a shower head is a straightforward project that requires very few tools. In most cases, you probably already have what you need at home. The good news is that this is not a project that demands specialized equipment or expensive purchases.

The primary tool you'll need is an adjustable wrench or a pipe wrench. An adjustable wrench is a single tool with a movable jaw that can fit different sized nuts and fittings. Most hardware stores sell adjustable wrenches for between $10 and $30. If you already own one, you're set. A pipe wrench is similar but has a different grip style and is designed specifically for plumbing work. Either tool will work for this project.

Some people prefer using a regular crescent wrench or even a pair of pliers if they already have them on hand. If the old shower head is not too tightly fastened, you might be able to unscrew it by hand without any tools at all. Many people find that gripping the shower arm with one hand to hold it steady while turning the shower head with the other works fine.

You'll also want to have on hand some plumber's tape, also called thread seal tape or PTFE tape. This is an inexpensive white tape that prevents leaks by sealing the connection between the shower head and the shower arm. A roll costs about $3 to $5 and lasts for many projects. Some people use plumber's putty as an alternative, though tape is generally easier for beginners to use.

Other helpful items include a dry cloth or rag to grip the shower head and arm, which can help prevent slipping and protect the finish from scratches. A bucket or towel placed under the connection can catch any water that drips when you remove the old shower head. Have your new shower head nearby before you start so you can install it right away.

Practical Takeaway: Check your toolbox for an adjustable wrench. If you don't have one, pick up an inexpensive wrench from a hardware store. Purchase a roll of plumber's tape while you're there. You'll have what you need for this project and for future plumbing repairs.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Removal

Removing your old shower head is the first step in the replacement process. This part is usually easier than people expect. Most shower heads have been in place for years and simply need to be unscrewed from the shower arm—the pipe coming out of the wall.

Start by turning off the water if you prefer to work in a dry environment, though this is not strictly necessary since you'll be working above the tub or shower floor where water drains. Some people simply turn the shower handle to the off position. Take your adjustable wrench and position it on the hexagonal nut where the shower head connects to the shower arm. The nut is usually where the shower head meets the pipe coming out of the wall.

Hold the shower arm steady with your other hand or with a second wrench. This is important because you don't want to apply too much force to the arm itself, which could loosen the connection inside the wall. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the nut. It may take several turns before the shower head comes free. If it's stuck, you can apply penetrating oil like WD-40 and wait 15 to 30 minutes before trying again.

Once the nut is loose enough, you can usually finish unscrewing by hand. Set the old shower head aside. You may notice that there is old tape or putty on the threads of the shower arm. Use a dry cloth or old rag to wipe away as much of this as possible. A plastic scraper can help remove stubborn buildup, but avoid using sharp metal tools that might damage the threads. The threads are the spiral grooves on the shower arm that the new shower head will screw onto. Clean threads ensure a better seal with your new shower head.

If you discover that the old shower head won't budge even with the wrench, try applying heat with a hair dryer for a few minutes to expand the metal slightly, then try loosening again. Another option is to leave the penetrating oil on overnight and try the next day. Patience is better than forcing it and potentially damaging the shower arm.

Practical Takeaway: Take your time during removal and hold the shower arm steady with a second wrench or your hand. Clean off all old tape and debris from the threads before installing the new shower head.

Preparing the Connection and Installing Your New Shower Head

Before you screw on your new shower head, you need to prepare the shower arm by wrapping it with plumber's tape. This tape creates a watertight seal that prevents leaks between the shower head and the arm. It's a simple but important step that takes just a minute or two.

Hold the roll of plumber's tape with the tape facing toward you. Start wrapping the tape around the threads of the shower arm in the clockwise direction—the same direction the shower head will screw on. Use your thumb to press the tape against the threads as you wrap. Go around the threads three to four times, overlapping each layer slightly. The tape should cover all the visible threads. Tear the tape off the roll when you've wrapped enough. The tape will stick to itself slightly and stay in place.

Now you're ready to install the new shower head. Thread the shower head onto the shower arm by hand at first, turning it clockwise. Keep turning until the shower head is hand-tight, meaning you've tightened it as much as you can by hand without using a tool. At this point, the shower head should be close to its final position but not yet fully tight.

Use your adjustable wrench to tighten the connection the rest of the way. Place the wrench on the nut where the shower head meets the shower arm. Turn clockwise while holding the shower arm steady with your other hand or a second wrench. You don't need to tighten it extremely hard—just firm enough that it doesn't wobble or turn by hand. Over-tightening can actually cause leaks because it can damage the tape seal or crack the connection.

Once the connection feels snug, turn on the water and check for leaks. Look at the connection point where the shower head meets the shower arm. A small amount of moisture is normal right after installation, but you should not see water dripping or spraying from this connection. If water is leaking, turn off the water, let it dry, and tighten just a little bit more with the wrench. Then test again.
