Free Guide to Resetting Your Venmo Password
Understanding Why You Might Need to Reset Your Venmo Password
Your Venmo password is the main protection for your account and the payment information connected to it. There are several situations where resetting your password becomes important. If you suspect someone else knows your password, or if you've used the same password on another website that experienced a security breach, resetting is a smart step. Many people also reset their passwords periodically as part of general account maintenance, similar to how you might change the locks on your house every few years.

You might also need to reset your password if you've forgotten it. This happens more often than you might think—people manage dozens of passwords across different apps and websites. Venmo recognizes this reality and provides a straightforward way to regain entry to your account through their password reset feature.
Another common reason involves sharing devices with family members or roommates. If someone else has access to your phone or computer and knows your password, resetting it ensures only you can log in. This is particularly important since Venmo handles real money transactions.
Understanding when and why to reset your password helps you maintain control of your financial information. Security isn't something that happens once—it's an ongoing practice. Resetting your password is one of the most direct ways you can protect yourself.
Practical Takeaway: Consider resetting your Venmo password if you've forgotten it, suspect it's been compromised, shared your device with others, or simply want to update your security practices.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Resetting Your Password on the Venmo App
The mobile app version of Venmo makes resetting your password relatively straightforward. Start by opening the Venmo app on your phone. If you're already logged in, you'll need to log out first. Look for the settings menu—this is typically represented by a gear icon or menu button. The exact location may vary depending on your phone's operating system, but Venmo places this option in an easily accessible area of the interface.

Once you're at the login screen, look for a "Trouble logging in?" or "Forgot password?" link. This link is usually positioned below the password field or near the login button. Tap on this link, and Venmo will prompt you to enter the email address or phone number associated with your account. Make sure you enter this information exactly as it appears in your account records.
After you've entered your contact information, Venmo will send you a password reset link to your registered email address. Check your email inbox for a message from Venmo. If you don't see it within a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder—sometimes legitimate emails end up there. The email will contain a link with instructions on how to create a new password.
Click the link in the email, and you'll be taken to a page where you can create a new password. When choosing your new password, think about making it something you can remember but that would be difficult for others to guess. A strong password typically includes a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using personal information like birthdays or names of family members.
After you've entered your new password and confirmed it, Venmo will notify you that your password has been changed. You can then log back into the app using your new password. If you have multiple devices with Venmo installed, you'll need to log back in on those as well with your new password.
Practical Takeaway: Follow the app's built-in password recovery process by tapping "Forgot password?" on the login screen and checking your email for the reset link from Venmo.
Resetting Your Password Through the Venmo Website
If you prefer to reset your password using a computer rather than a phone, you can do this through the Venmo website. Open your web browser and navigate to Venmo's login page. Like the app, you'll find a "Forgot password?" or similar link near the password field. Click this link to begin the password reset process.

The website will ask you to enter the email address or phone number associated with your Venmo account. Take a moment to verify you're typing this correctly, as this is how Venmo will contact you with your reset instructions. Once you've entered your information, click the button to proceed. Venmo's website will send you a password reset email to the address you provided.
Similar to the app process, check your email inbox for the message from Venmo. This email will contain a link that you'll click to access the password reset page. When you click the link, you'll see fields where you can enter your new password twice—once to enter it, and once to confirm it. This two-entry system helps catch typos so you don't accidentally lock yourself out.
When creating your new password, consider these guidelines: make it at least 12 characters long if possible, mix different types of characters (numbers, symbols, upper and lowercase letters), and avoid dictionary words or predictable patterns. You can use a passphrase—a combination of random words strung together—which can be both strong and easier to remember than a string of random characters.
After you've entered and confirmed your new password, Venmo will show you a confirmation message. You can now return to the login page and enter your new credentials. The website password reset process works the same way as the app version—you're simply using a different interface to access the same Venmo account.
Practical Takeaway: On Venmo.com, use the "Forgot password?" link on the login page, verify your email, click the reset link in your inbox, and create a new password with a mix of character types.
Creating a Strong Password That Protects Your Venmo Account
A strong password is your first line of defense against unauthorized access to your Venmo account. Many people make the mistake of creating passwords that are easy to remember but also easy to guess. Examples of weak passwords include "123456," "password," your birth year, or your pet's name. While these are simple, they're also the first combinations that someone trying to break into your account would attempt.

A better approach is to create something more complex. Consider using a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like @, #, $, or &. For example, "BlueSky$2024Guitar!" combines different character types and is harder to predict than "bluesky2024." The longer your password, the better—aim for at least 12 characters. The difference between an 8-character password and a 16-character password is enormous in terms of how long it would take someone to guess it.
Many people find that passphrases work better than random character strings. A passphrase is a series of unrelated words put together with numbers and symbols mixed in. For instance, "Coffee-Purple-28-Mountain" is easier for most people to remember than "Cp28M!" but just as difficult for others to guess. The key is choosing words that are meaningful to you but not obvious from your social media profiles or public information.
Avoid creating passwords based on personal information that others might know or find out. This includes family members' names, pet names, addresses, phone numbers, or birthdates. These are the first things someone might try if they're attempting to access your account. Also, don't reuse the same password across multiple websites and apps. If one site experiences a security breach, criminals will often try that same password on other popular services like Venmo.
Consider using a password manager—a tool that stores and organizes your passwords securely. Password managers like Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass can generate strong passwords for you and remember them, so you don't have to. This way, you only need to remember one strong password to access the password manager itself.
Practical Takeaway: Create a password with at least 12 characters combining uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Consider using an unrelated passphrase rather than random characters, and never reuse passwords across different services.
What to Do If You Don't Receive the Password Reset Email
Sometimes the password reset email from Venmo doesn't arrive in your inbox as expected. This is usually one of a few common issues that you can troubleshoot. The first place to look is your spam or junk folder. Email providers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo sometimes filter legitimate emails into these folders incorrectly. Check your spam folder first—you might
