Free Guide to Turning Off Num Lock on Keyboards
Understanding the Num Lock Key and Its Function
The Num Lock key is a toggle feature found on most computer keyboards that changes how the numeric keypad operates. When Num Lock is turned on, the number pad on the right side of your keyboard functions as a calculator-style number input device. When Num Lock is turned off, those same keys perform navigation functions instead, such as moving your cursor up, down, left, and right, or controlling page navigation.

The numeric keypad typically contains numbers 0 through 9, along with mathematical symbols like plus, minus, multiplication, and division signs. On many keyboards, particularly laptop keyboards, these keys are integrated into the main keyboard layout and share dual purposes. The Num Lock status is usually indicated by a small light on the keyboard itself—this light turns on when Num Lock is active and turns off when it is inactive.
Understanding which mode your Num Lock is in matters because it affects how your keyboard responds to your input. If you try to use arrow keys for navigation and Num Lock is on, you may instead type numbers. Conversely, if you need to enter numerical data and Num Lock is off, you will get navigation commands instead. This feature exists because keyboard real estate is limited, particularly on laptops, so manufacturers designed keys to serve dual purposes depending on the Num Lock setting.
Different operating systems and applications may handle the Num Lock key differently. Some programs are designed to work better with Num Lock in a specific state, while others may not care about the setting at all. Knowing how to control this feature gives you more flexibility in how you use your keyboard across different tasks.
Practical Takeaway: The Num Lock key acts as a switch between two different input modes on your numeric keypad. Recognizing what Num Lock does is the first step toward managing it effectively for your workflow.
Locating the Num Lock Key on Different Keyboard Types
The Num Lock key is located in different places depending on what type of keyboard you are using. On a full-sized desktop keyboard with a separate numeric keypad, the Num Lock key sits at the top-left corner of the numeric keypad section. You will typically find it just above the "7" key or to the left of the "8" key. On most standard keyboards, this key is clearly labeled "Num Lock" or sometimes abbreviated as "Num Lk."

On laptop keyboards, finding the Num Lock key can be more challenging because laptops have limited space. Many modern laptops do not have a dedicated Num Lock key at all. Instead, some laptops require you to hold down the "Fn" key (function key) while pressing another key to activate Num Lock. The Num Lock function might be located on one of the number keys at the top of the keyboard or integrated into a key in the upper-right area. Check your keyboard's labeling to see if any key displays "Num Lock" text in a smaller font above or below the main label.
Some keyboards, particularly gaming or ergonomic keyboards, may place the Num Lock key in slightly different locations. High-end mechanical keyboards sometimes position it differently for aesthetic or functional reasons. If you cannot immediately locate Num Lock on your keyboard, look for small text printed on keys that might indicate its location. You can also consult your keyboard's manual or the manufacturer's website for a diagram showing the exact key location.
On Mac keyboards, which traditionally have not included a numeric keypad, the Num Lock function works differently. Mac keyboards designed with a numeric keypad operate similarly to Windows keyboards, but the key may be labeled differently. On modern Mac keyboards, you might access number pad functions through different methods depending on whether you are using an Apple keyboard or a third-party keyboard connected to your Mac.
Practical Takeaway: Take time to physically locate the Num Lock key on your specific keyboard type. This simple step prevents confusion when you need to toggle the setting and helps you understand your keyboard layout better.
Methods for Turning Off Num Lock on Windows Computers
On Windows computers, the most straightforward method to turn off Num Lock is to simply press the Num Lock key once. If Num Lock is currently on (indicated by the light being illuminated), pressing the key will turn it off immediately. You will typically see the indicator light turn off instantly when you do this. This method works on any Windows machine, whether you are using Windows 10, Windows 11, or earlier versions.

If your keyboard does not have a dedicated Num Lock key or if the key is not working, you can use your computer's on-screen keyboard as an alternative. To access this on Windows, navigate to the Start menu, search for "On-Screen Keyboard," and open the application. When the on-screen keyboard appears on your screen, look for the "numlock" button and click it with your mouse to toggle Num Lock on or off. This method does not require your physical keyboard to have a functioning Num Lock key.
Windows also provides settings that allow you to configure Num Lock behavior at startup. You can access these settings through your Control Panel or Settings app. Some users prefer to have Num Lock turned on automatically when their computer starts, while others prefer it off by default. Additionally, third-party keyboard software or drivers may offer their own Num Lock settings that you can adjust through those applications.
For external keyboards connected to a Windows computer, the Num Lock key should function the same way as on a built-in keyboard. Simply press it to toggle the setting. If your external keyboard's Num Lock light is not responding or if the keyboard is not responding to the key press, your keyboard may have a separate power switch or connection issue that needs troubleshooting. Try unplugging and reconnecting the keyboard, or checking that batteries are inserted if it is a wireless keyboard.
Practical Takeaway: The quickest way to turn off Num Lock on Windows is to press the key once. If your keyboard lacks this key, Windows provides an on-screen keyboard option that achieves the same result.
Turning Off Num Lock on Mac Computers and Apple Keyboards
Mac computers handle Num Lock differently than Windows machines because Apple's keyboard design philosophy has traditionally emphasized simplicity and minimalism. Modern Mac keyboards typically include a numeric keypad only when users purchase a separate external keyboard, such as the Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. If you are using an Apple keyboard with a numeric keypad, you will find a key labeled "Clear" at the top-left of the numeric keypad section. This "Clear" key functions similarly to the Num Lock key on Windows keyboards.

To turn off Num Lock on a Mac keyboard with an external numeric keypad, press the "Clear" key. This toggles the numeric keypad between calculation mode and navigation mode. When the key is in navigation mode, the numeric keypad functions perform cursor movement and page navigation instead of number input. You may notice that Macs do not typically display a light indicator for this setting like Windows keyboards do, so you may need to test the keypad to confirm which mode it is in.
If you are using a third-party keyboard connected to your Mac, the Num Lock behavior depends on the keyboard's design. Many third-party keyboards include an actual "Num Lock" key labeled as such. Simply press this key to toggle the setting, just as you would on a Windows computer. The functionality may work slightly differently on Mac depending on the keyboard manufacturer's drivers, but the basic on-and-off toggle remains the same.
For users working with both Mac and Windows machines, understanding these differences prevents confusion when switching between platforms. Some external keyboards are designed to work with both systems and may include software that lets you customize which mode Num Lock defaults to. If you frequently use multiple keyboards or operating systems, exploring these customization options in your keyboard's software can streamline your workflow.
Practical Takeaway: Mac users should press the "Clear" key on their numeric keypad to toggle Num Lock, while those using third-party keyboards should look for a dedicated Num Lock key. Understanding your specific keyboard type eliminates confusion across different devices.
Troubleshooting When Num Lock Will Not Turn Off
If you press the Num Lock key and nothing seems to happen, several factors might be responsible. First, verify that your keyboard is properly connected to your computer. For wired keyboards, ensure the cable is firmly seated in the USB port. For wireless keyboards, check that the keyboard has fresh batteries and that the wireless receiver is connected to your computer. Some wireless keyboards have an on-and-off switch; make sure
