What Bullying Is and How to Recognize It

Bullying is when someone repeatedly hurts, embarrasses, or intimidates another person on purpose. It's not just having a bad day with someone or getting into one argument. Real bullying happens over and over, and it involves a power imbalance—meaning one person has more power or strength than the other, whether physical, social, or emotional.

Bullying takes many forms. Physical bullying includes hitting, pushing, or damaging someone's belongings. Verbal bullying involves name-calling, insults, threats, or spreading rumors. Relational bullying happens when someone excludes, ignores, or turns friends against another person. Cyberbullying occurs online through texts, social media, email, or gaming platforms—and it can happen 24 hours a day because the internet never closes.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, about 22% of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the 2021-2022 school year. Cyberbullying is increasingly common, with studies showing that roughly 15% of high school students have experienced it. The effects are serious: bullying can lead to depression, anxiety, poor school performance, and in severe cases, self-harm.

Signs that someone is being bullied include unexplained injuries or damaged clothing, sudden changes in eating or sleeping habits, withdrawal from friends and activities, reluctance to go to school, and signs of anxiety or depression. A person being bullied might not tell anyone immediately because they fear retaliation, feel ashamed, or don't believe adults will take action.

Understanding what bullying actually is matters because not every conflict or disagreement qualifies. Learning the difference helps people respond appropriately and know when to involve other adults or authorities. If you're unsure whether a situation is bullying, asking yourself these questions can help: Is this repeated behavior? Does one person have more power? Is it intentional? Is the target being harmed?

Practical Takeaway: Keep a record of bullying incidents by writing down what happened, when it happened, who was involved, and who witnessed it. This record can be valuable if you need to report the behavior to school officials or other authorities.

How Bullying Affects Mental and Physical Health

Bullying doesn't just hurt emotionally—it creates real, measurable changes in the brain and body. When someone experiences bullying, their nervous system stays in a state of high alert. The body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which over time can cause lasting physical and mental health problems.

Mental health effects are significant. People who are bullied report higher rates of anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They often develop low self-esteem and negative self-image. Some turn inward and become isolated; others act out in anger or aggression. Research from the Journal of School Violence found that students who are bullied have significantly lower academic performance and are more likely to drop out of school. Sleep problems are extremely common, with bullied individuals experiencing insomnia or nightmares.

Physical health consequences include headaches, stomach problems, and weakened immune systems due to chronic stress. Some people develop eating disorders or substance abuse problems as coping mechanisms. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that bullying victims visit doctors more often and have higher rates of stress-related illnesses. Long-term effects can extend into adulthood, affecting relationships, career success, and overall life satisfaction.

The impact varies based on individual factors. Some people are more resilient, especially if they have strong support networks. Others struggle more intensely, particularly if they have existing mental health conditions or lack family support. Children and teens may be especially vulnerable because their brains are still developing and they lack some coping skills that adults possess.

Bullies themselves often experience negative consequences. Research suggests that people who bully others are more likely to engage in criminal behavior, substance abuse, and domestic violence later in life. Understanding this doesn't excuse bullying, but it shows that everyone involved is affected.

Practical Takeaway: If you or someone you know is experiencing bullying, talking to a trusted adult—parent, school counselor, teacher, or doctor—is one of the most important first steps. Professional support like counseling can provide coping strategies and help address the emotional and physical effects of bullying.

Where Bullying Happens and Who Is Most at Risk

Bullying occurs in schools, workplaces, online, and in communities. Schools report the highest rates, with bullying happening in hallways, bathrooms, cafeterias, classrooms, and school buses. Playgrounds and sports activities are common locations because supervision may be lighter. Cyberbullying, however, has no physical location—it happens on social media platforms, through text messages, in online games, and on websites.

Certain groups face higher risks of being bullied. LGBTQ+ youth report bullying at significantly higher rates than their peers—the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 58% of LGBTQ+ students experienced bullying. Students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and autism spectrum disorder, are bullied more frequently. Students from racial or ethnic minorities sometimes face bullying tied to their identity. Students who are perceived as different in any way—whether because of their appearance, interests, economic status, or social skills—may become targets.

Young children in elementary school and students in middle school often experience the highest rates of traditional bullying. High school students report more cyberbullying and relational aggression. Younger children may not have the vocabulary to report bullying or may not fully understand that what's happening is wrong. Adolescents navigate complex social hierarchies and peer pressure, which can intensify bullying dynamics.

Boys and girls experience bullying differently. Boys are more likely to experience physical bullying and direct confrontation. Girls more commonly experience relational bullying and social exclusion. Cyberbullying affects both, though girls report higher rates of cyberbullying overall. However, these patterns are generalizations—individual experiences vary widely.

Children who have few friends, low social confidence, or who show anxiety are sometimes targeted. Ironically, children who are very popular or who display exceptional talents can also be targeted out of envy or resentment. Bullies often choose targets they perceive as unlikely to fight back or tell adults.

Practical Takeaway: If you work with young people or have children in your life, pay attention to social dynamics and teach them about respectful relationships. Helping young people build friendships, develop confidence, and feel comfortable reporting problems creates an environment where bullying is less likely to thrive.

Steps to Take If You're Being Bullied

If you're experiencing bullying, your safety is the first priority. In immediate dangerous situations, move to a safe place and tell a trusted adult or call emergency services. For ongoing bullying that doesn't involve immediate physical danger, here are steps you can take.

First, tell a trusted adult. This might be a parent, school counselor, teacher, coach, or another family member. Many bullied people don't report because they fear making things worse or feel embarrassed. The truth is that adults can't help if they don't know what's happening. Be specific about what occurred, when, and who was involved. If the first adult doesn't respond effectively, tell another adult. Persistence matters.

Second, document the bullying. Write down dates, times, what happened, and who witnessed it. If bullying occurs online, take screenshots or save messages. Keep these records in a safe place. This documentation is valuable if you need to involve school administrators or law enforcement.

Third, use available reporting systems. Most schools have bullying reporting procedures—these might be anonymous hotlines, online forms, or in-person reports to administrators. Many social media platforms have reporting features for cyberbullying. Using these official channels creates a record and puts the institution on notice.

Fourth, consider your own safety in social situations. If possible, spend time with supportive friends and avoid situations where you're alone with bullies. Change your routine if it helps. Don't engage with bullies online—don't argue back or respond to provocative messages. Bullies often feed on reactions. Blocking and ignoring is often more effective than confronting.

Fifth, develop coping strategies. Talk to a counselor or therapist who can teach you techniques for managing stress and anxiety. Connect with supportive friends and family.
