Understanding LG TV Software Updates and Why They Matter

LG televisions run on software that controls how the TV operates, displays content, and connects to other devices. This software, sometimes called firmware, handles everything from picture quality adjustments to streaming app functionality. Like computers and smartphones, LG TVs receive periodic updates that improve performance, add new features, and patch security issues.

Software updates for LG TVs serve several purposes. They can fix bugs that cause apps to crash or freeze. They may improve how your TV connects to your Wi-Fi network or other smart home devices. Updates sometimes add new features that weren't available when you first purchased your television. Security updates protect your TV from potential threats, which matters because modern televisions connect to the internet and process personal information when you use streaming services.

The update process varies depending on your LG TV model and age. Newer LG models with webOS (LG's smart TV operating system) have different update procedures than older models. Some TVs update automatically over the internet when connected to power and Wi-Fi. Others require you to manually initiate updates through the TV's settings menu. A few older models may need updates through USB drives or other methods.

Understanding your specific TV model helps determine which update method applies to you. You can find your model number on a sticker on the back of your TV or in the TV's settings menu under "About This TV" or "System Information." Knowing whether your TV has webOS and which version helps you follow the correct steps for your situation.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your LG TV's model number and check whether it has webOS by looking in the settings menu. This information determines which update instructions will work for your television.

Preparing Your TV for a Software Update

Before starting any software update, preparation reduces the risk of problems. The most important preparation step is ensuring your TV has sufficient power. Never update a TV that might lose electricity during the process, as interrupted updates can damage the TV's software permanently. Plug your TV directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip when possible, and confirm the outlet works reliably.

Your TV should also have a strong internet connection for updates that download over Wi-Fi. Check your connection by going to the TV's network settings and running a connection test. If your TV shows weak signal strength or frequent disconnections, move your Wi-Fi router closer to the TV or use an Ethernet cable if your LG model has an internet port. A wired connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi for large file transfers like software updates.

Clear space on your TV's storage if the update requires it. Some LG TVs have limited internal storage, and updates need temporary space to work. Check your TV's storage status in the settings menu under "Storage" or "Memory." If storage is nearly full, delete unused apps or clear the cache for apps you use regularly. This process varies by model, but typically involves going to Settings, then Apps or Applications, selecting an app, and choosing "Clear Cache" or "Uninstall."

Allow sufficient time for the update process. Most LG TV software updates take between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on file size and internet speed. Don't plan to update your TV right before an important event or program you want to watch. During the update, avoid using other devices on your network that consume significant bandwidth, such as streaming video or downloading large files, as this can slow the update or cause connection problems.

Practical Takeaway: Ensure your TV has direct power, a strong internet connection, and 30 minutes of uninterrupted time before beginning an update.

Updating LG TVs with Automatic Updates Enabled

Many newer LG TVs with webOS have automatic update features that check for new software regularly. When updates become available, these TVs can download and install them without any action from you. This feature typically operates during hours when you're unlikely to watch TV, such as late at night or early morning, though you can usually customize the update schedule in settings.

To check your TV's automatic update settings, navigate to Settings on your LG TV. Look for options labeled "System," "Advanced Settings," or "About This TV." Within these menus, find "Software Update" or "Automatic Update." You should see options to enable or disable automatic updates and possibly to set preferred update times. Some models allow you to choose whether updates install immediately after download or wait for your approval.

If your TV has automatic updates enabled and you see a notification about a pending update, you can typically choose to install it right away or defer it to a later time. Installing during off-peak hours, when you're not watching the TV, minimizes disruption. However, if a security update becomes available, installing it within a few days of receiving the notification is advisable, as security patches address potential vulnerabilities.

Even with automatic updates enabled, you should periodically check whether your TV is actually receiving updates. Go to Settings and look for "Software Version" or "Current Software Version." Note this version number, then check back in a few weeks to see if it has changed. If the version hasn't changed in several months and your TV is connected to the internet, you may need to manually check for updates or investigate connection problems. Sometimes TVs don't receive automatic updates if they're set to specific update times and turned off during those hours.

Practical Takeaway: Check your TV's Settings menu for automatic update options and note your current software version number to track whether updates are installing.

Manually Checking and Installing Software Updates

If your LG TV doesn't automatically update or you want to update immediately without waiting, you can manually check for and install updates. Start by navigating to the Settings menu on your TV. Use your remote's menu or settings button—this varies by remote type—to access the main TV menu. From there, look for "System" or "Advanced Settings," then find "Software Update" or "System Update."

Select "Check for Update" or "Update Now," depending on your TV model's menu labels. Your TV will connect to LG's servers and check whether a newer software version is available. This check takes a few minutes. If no update is available, the TV will display a message confirming your software is current. If an update is available, the TV will show the new version number and sometimes a brief description of what the update includes.

Before confirming installation, review any information provided about the update. Some LG TVs display release notes explaining changes or improvements included in the update. Read these notes if available to understand what will change. Then select "Install," "Update," or "Download and Install," depending on your TV's terminology. Do not turn off the TV, unplug it, or use the remote to interrupt the process once installation begins.

During installation, your TV's screen may go black, show an update progress bar, or restart several times. This is normal. The entire process typically takes 5 to 30 minutes. Some TVs return to the home screen automatically when finished, while others require you to press a button to proceed. After the update completes, your TV should restart and function normally. You can verify the update installed by checking the software version number again in Settings—it should now show the newer version number you saw before updating.

Practical Takeaway: Go to Settings, find Software Update, select Check for Update, and follow your TV's on-screen instructions to install any available updates.

Troubleshooting Update Problems

Occasionally, software updates encounter problems. The most common issue is a weak or interrupted internet connection during the update process. If your update fails or stops mid-way, restart your TV completely by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. After restart, move closer to your Wi-Fi router or use an Ethernet cable if available, then attempt the update again.

Another frequent problem is insufficient storage space. If your TV shows an error message about storage when you attempt an update, delete unused apps and app data to free space. Go to Settings, find "Apps" or "Applications," select apps you don't use, and choose "Uninstall" or "Remove." Be cautious not to uninstall essential LG apps. Stick to third-party apps like old game apps or streaming services you no longer use. After clearing space, try the update again.

Sometimes TVs get stuck on an update screen or don't progress past an initial loading screen. If this happens and you've waited 15 minutes without progress, try a factory reset if the TV has a dedicated reset button
