Understanding Colorado DMV Address Change Requirements

When you move to a new address in Colorado, updating your driver's license and vehicle registration with the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a legal requirement, not optional. Colorado law requires you to notify the DMV of your address change within 30 days of relocating. This applies whether you're moving within Colorado or moving to Colorado from another state. The requirement covers both your driver's license and any vehicle registrations you hold.

The Colorado DMV maintains records on approximately 4.2 million active driver's licenses and over 5 million registered vehicles. When your address changes, these records need to reflect your current location for several important reasons. First, the DMV uses your address to contact you about registration renewals, recalls, or other important vehicle information. Second, law enforcement and courts use DMV records to locate individuals. Third, your insurance company and other organizations may rely on DMV records to verify your current address. Fourth, if you're involved in a traffic incident or receive a citation, having an outdated address on file can create legal complications.

Colorado recognizes several types of address changes. A standard address change occurs when you move within the state. An out-of-state move happens when you relocate to Colorado from another state and need to transfer your license and registration. A temporary address change may apply if you're relocating seasonally or temporarily. Understanding which category applies to your situation helps you gather the correct documents and follow the appropriate process.

Practical takeaway: Review your current driver's license and vehicle registration to confirm what address is currently on file with the Colorado DMV. If any document shows an outdated address, you'll want to initiate the change process.

What Information Is Included in Colorado's Address Change Guide

A free Colorado DMV address change guide provides educational information about the procedures, documents, and options available when you need to update your address with the state. The guide explains what the Colorado DMV is, how it operates, and what types of transactions it handles. It describes the various ways you can submit an address change—in person at a local DMV office, by mail, or through the DMV's online portal. The guide walks through the specific forms you may need, such as the Application for Colorado Driver License or Identification Card (Form DL-43) or the Motor Vehicle Registration Application (Form MV-14).

The guide typically covers documentation requirements in detail. For example, it explains that you'll need proof of Colorado residency, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, mortgage statement, or bank statement showing your new address. It describes what documents count as acceptable proof and what documents will not be accepted. The guide may also address common questions about timeframes—specifically, that Colorado law gives you 30 days from your move date to update your address, and what may happen if you don't comply within that window.

Educational guides from the DMV also typically include information about fees. As of 2024, a standard address change on a driver's license may be processed at no cost if done before your license expires. However, if you're renewing your license at the same time as changing your address, renewal fees apply. For vehicle registration, fees vary depending on vehicle type and whether you're simply updating an address on an existing registration versus renewing the registration. The guide provides this fee information so you know what to expect.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting a DMV office or mailing documents, review the guide to understand exactly which documents you need to bring and whether fees will apply to your specific situation.

Step-by-Step Process for Updating Your Address

The Colorado DMV offers multiple pathways to update your address, and understanding each one helps you choose the method that works best for your circumstances. The online portal at dmv.colorado.gov represents the fastest option for many people. You can log into your DMV account, navigate to address change services, enter your new address, and submit the change electronically. The online system typically processes address changes within 1-2 business days. However, not all account types qualify for online address changes—you'll want to check the website to confirm your eligibility for this option.

In-person visits to a Colorado DMV office represent the traditional method and remain an option for anyone who prefers face-to-face service or who cannot use the online system. Colorado has DMV offices in most counties, with some larger cities having multiple locations. When you visit in person, bring your current driver's license, proof of your new Colorado address (a utility bill or lease dated within 90 days of your move works well), and any other documents specific to your situation. The staff will verify your information, process your address change, and typically issue you an updated driver's license on the spot if you're renewing. For vehicle registration address changes at an in-person office, staff can often process these in 10-15 minutes.

Mail-in address changes allow you to submit documents without visiting an office. You'll complete the appropriate form (DL-43 for driver's license, MV-14 for vehicle registration), attach proof of your new address, and mail everything to the address specified on the form. Mail processing typically takes 2-3 weeks from the date the DMV receives your envelope. To avoid delays, make copies of everything you send and include a cover letter listing what documents are enclosed. Send your package via a method that provides tracking, such as certified mail, so you can confirm receipt.

Practical takeaway: Choose the method that best fits your timeline and comfort level—online for speed, in-person for immediate results and to ask questions, or mail for convenience if you're not in a rush.

Documents and Proof of Residency You'll Need

When updating your address with the Colorado DMV, certain documents are required regardless of which method you use. Your current driver's license or identification card is the foundation—this is what you're updating. Bring the original license, not a copy. If you've lost your license, the process differs slightly, and the guide explains how to handle that situation. You also need proof of your new Colorado address. The DMV accepts several types of documents as proof of residency. Utility bills (electric, gas, water, or internet) dated within the past 90 days are widely accepted. Lease agreements or rental agreements showing your new address work well. Mortgage statements, property tax statements, or deed records work for homeowners. Bank or credit card statements dated within 90 days are acceptable. Vehicle insurance policies showing your new address can serve as proof. Voter registration cards are accepted. Some people use medical bills or other official correspondence showing their new address.

The guide explains what documents will not be accepted. A lease that's postdated (not yet active) won't count. Printouts from websites showing your address, without official letterhead or signature, typically aren't accepted. Unsigned or undated documents are rejected. Documents older than 90 days are generally not accepted as current proof of residency. The DMV wants documents that are official, dated recently, and show your name and new address clearly. If you're temporarily staying with someone else and don't have a utility bill in your name, the guide often suggests using a notarized statement from the homeowner combined with proof that person lives there, though practices vary by office.

For vehicle registration address changes, you may also need your vehicle title or the vehicle registration card. If you're doing both a driver's license and registration update at the same time, organize your documents by category before you visit the office or mail them. Create a simple list noting what you're including. If anything is missing or unclear, staff will contact you, which delays the process. When mailing documents, photograph them first so you have copies for your records.

Practical takeaway: Gather your proof of residency at least one day before you plan to submit your address change, and verify the date on each document to ensure it's recent enough to be accepted.

Timelines, Processing Periods, and What to Expect

Understanding processing timelines helps you plan accordingly and know when to expect your updated license or registration. If you submit your address change online, the Colorado DMV typically processes these within 1-2 business days. You'll receive a confirmation email, and your DMV records will be updated. If you need a replacement license card after updating your address online, you'll be charged a small replacement fee (currently around $20 for a standard driver's license). If you're also renewing your license at the same time through the online system, your renewal process and address change happen together.
