Types of Passports and How to Choose the Right One

The United States offers several types of passports, each serving different purposes. Understanding the differences can help you determine which option may suit your needs. The most common types are the passport book, passport card, and passport for individuals under age 16.

The passport book is the traditional form of passport and serves as proof of U.S. citizenship and identity. It contains biographical information, a photograph, and security features designed to prevent fraud. The book format is accepted for all forms of international travel, including air, sea, and land border crossings. According to the U.S. State Department, passport books remain the most widely used form of passport.

The passport card is a smaller, wallet-sized credential that also proves citizenship and identity. However, its use is limited. The passport card is valid only for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean nations. It cannot be used for international air travel. The card format may appeal to people who frequently cross land borders but do not travel internationally by plane.

Passport books for children under 16 differ from adult passports in several ways. These passports have a validity period of 5 years instead of 10 years. Both parents or guardians typically must appear in person at the passport facility, along with the child. The application process involves additional documentation to establish parental consent and the child's citizenship.

Adults aged 16 and older may apply for passports valid for 10 years. First-time applicants in this age group must apply in person at a passport acceptance facility. Renewal options are available for some people, though the requirements vary based on factors like the age of your previous passport and how it was issued.

Practical Takeaway: Before visiting a passport facility, decide which type of passport fits your travel plans. If you only travel by land or sea to nearby countries, a passport card may suffice. For international air travel, you need a passport book.

Required Documents and What to Bring to Your Appointment

Successfully obtaining a passport requires submitting specific documents that prove your identity, citizenship, and the information on your application. Understanding what documents you need beforehand can make your visit to a passport facility smoother and faster. Missing documents may result in delays or having to schedule another appointment.

Proof of U.S. citizenship is a core requirement. Acceptable documents include an original or certified birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, a Certificate of Citizenship, a valid U.S. passport, or a report of birth abroad of a U.S. citizen. The document must be an original or certified copy—photocopies are not accepted. If your birth certificate was issued more than one year ago and shows a different name than your current name, you may also need to provide legal documentation of the name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order.

Proof of identity is also required. Examples include a driver's license, state identification card, military identification, or federal employee identification. The document must be valid and show your photograph. If you do not have a government-issued photo ID, the passport facility can accept alternative documents such as a school ID, voter registration card, or library card, often in combination with other supporting documents.

A passport photo is mandatory. The photo must meet specific requirements: it must be 2x2 inches in size, taken within the last 6 months, show a full frontal view of your face against a white background, and display a neutral expression with eyes open and looking directly at the camera. You cannot wear sunglasses, hats, or heavy makeup that changes your appearance. The passport facility may take your photo on-site for an additional fee if you do not have one ready.

Completed application forms are necessary. Form DS-11 is used for first-time applicants and passport renewals requiring in-person appearance. Form DS-82 is used for certain renewal situations where you can apply by mail. Form DS-64 is used to report a lost or stolen passport. These forms are available on the U.S. State Department website and at passport facilities.

Payment information is important to know. As of 2024, the passport book fee for adults is $130 for a first-time application and $110 for renewal. The passport card costs $35 for first-time and $30 for renewal. Execution fees range from $35 to $180 depending on the service type and age of the applicant. The facility may accept cash, checks, money orders, or credit/debit cards, though payment methods vary by location.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist before your appointment: certified birth certificate or citizenship document, government-issued photo ID, passport photo meeting size and quality standards, completed application form, and payment method. Organize these items in a folder to stay prepared.

Processing Times and What to Expect During Your Visit

Processing times for passports vary depending on the service level you choose and current demand at passport facilities. Understanding these timelines can help you plan your travel accordingly and know what to expect after you submit your application.

Routine service typically processes passports within 6 to 8 weeks. This timeframe is the standard option and the most common choice for travelers who can plan ahead. The U.S. State Department recommends applying for a passport several months before international travel to account for processing time and unexpected delays.

Expedited service can process applications faster, within 2 to 3 weeks. This option comes with an additional fee of $60 on top of the standard passport fees. Expedited service may be useful if you have travel plans coming up sooner than routine processing allows. However, expedited service still requires in-person application at a passport facility for most applicants.

Emergency passport service, sometimes called a "rush" service, is available for people with imminent travel—typically within 24 to 72 hours. This service is only available at certain passport agencies in major cities and requires a demonstration of urgent travel need, such as a plane ticket or emergency letter. Not all facilities offer emergency service, so you would need to contact an agency directly to determine if you qualify for this option.

During your visit to a passport facility in Exton, you can expect the following general process. First, you will check in at the facility and provide your documents. A staff member will review your application form and verify that all required documents are present and meet requirements. This review typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on how busy the facility is.

Next, your information will be entered into the system. Staff will ask you to confirm details such as your name, date of birth, and address. Your photograph will be taken if you did not bring one or if the one you brought does not meet standards. You will then pay the applicable fees. After payment, you receive a receipt with a tracking number that allows you to monitor your application status online.

After submitting your application, you do not wait at the facility for your passport. Your documents are sent to a processing center where your information is verified and your passport
