Understanding Facebook's Privacy Settings and Who Can See Your Information

Facebook offers several layers of privacy controls that determine who can view your profile, posts, photos, and personal information. When you create a Facebook account, the platform sets default privacy levels, but these settings may not match your personal comfort level. This guide explains how these controls work so you can make informed decisions about your online presence.

Your profile contains different types of information, each with separate privacy controls. Your profile picture and name are typically visible to everyone on Facebook by default, since these help other users find and recognize you. However, other details like your email address, phone number, birthday, and workplace information can be restricted. You can choose to make these details visible to:

• Everyone (public)
• Friends only
• Friends of friends
• Specific people or lists you create
• Only yourself

Your posts operate on a similar system. When you share a status update, photo, or video, you can choose the audience before posting. Many people share some posts publicly while keeping others visible only to friends. Facebook also allows you to create custom lists of people—such as "Close Friends," "Acquaintances," or "Family"—and share content with specific groups rather than all your friends at once.

One important feature is the ability to limit who can contact you or send you friend requests. You can restrict these actions to friends only, which reduces unwanted messages from strangers. You can also choose who can look up your profile using your email address or phone number, which adds another layer of control over who discovers your account.

Practical Takeaway: Spend time reviewing each section of your privacy settings—profile information, post audience, and contact restrictions. Write down which settings matter most to you (such as protecting your phone number or limiting who sees your birthday) so you can adjust them intentionally rather than accepting Facebook's defaults.

How to Control What Others See on Your Timeline and Profile

Your Facebook timeline is the main page where your posts, photos, and shared content appear. Managing what displays on your timeline involves several different controls. Understanding these tools helps you maintain the image you want to present to your friends and the broader Facebook community.

One key control is reviewing tags before they appear on your timeline. When someone tags you in a photo or post, you have the option to review the tag before it's visible to others. This means you can see what's being posted about you and decide whether to allow it to appear on your profile. To turn on this feature, go to your Settings, find the "Timeline and Tagging" section, and enable tag review. This gives you a chance to object to any tags that you don't want associated with your profile.

You can also control who can post on your timeline. Some people prefer to keep their timeline showing only their own posts, while others enjoy having friends write messages or share content on their timeline. Facebook lets you choose between allowing all friends to post, limiting it to specific people, or preventing anyone except you from posting on your timeline. This is particularly useful if you want to curate the appearance of your profile.

Another useful feature is the ability to hide posts you've already shared. If you posted something in the past that you'd like to keep from showing up on your timeline, you can archive or delete that post. You can also edit past posts to change the audience—for example, making a post that was originally public visible only to friends instead. This means you're not stuck with the audience choices you made when you first shared something.

Facebook also allows you to control who can see your friend list. Some people prefer to keep their connections private, while others don't mind if their friends are visible to the public. You can make your friend list visible to everyone, friends only, or completely private so that no one except you can see who you're connected with on the platform.

Practical Takeaway: Enable tag review in your timeline settings so you can approve posts and photos before they appear on your profile. Then, review your last few months of posts and adjust the audience on any older content you want to restrict.

Managing Your Personal Information and Keeping It Secure

Facebook collects and stores a significant amount of personal information about you, including your email address, phone number, birthday, work history, education, relationship status, and location. This guide explains where you can find these details in your settings and how to control who sees them.

Your contact information—email and phone number—can be restricted so that only you, only your friends, or no one else can use them to find you or contact you on Facebook. This is important because it prevents strangers from easily reaching you through the platform. You can also choose whether to make your birthday visible publicly, to friends only, or to hide it entirely. Many people hide their birthday to reduce the chance of identity theft, since birthdates are commonly used in security questions.

Work and education information can also be controlled. If you've listed your current workplace or school, you can adjust who sees this information. This is particularly important if you work in a sensitive field or prefer to keep your professional life separate from your social media presence. You can delete this information entirely if you don't want it on Facebook at all.

Facebook also collects data about your interests, activities, and browsing habits—both on Facebook and on other websites. This data is used for targeted advertising. You can view some of this information in your "Ad Preferences" section, which shows categories that Facebook has assigned to you based on your behavior. While you cannot stop Facebook from collecting this data, you can adjust your ad settings to have less personalized advertising if you prefer.

Location information is another important consideration. Facebook can access your device's location based on GPS, cell tower data, or IP address. You can turn off location services for Facebook in your device settings, or you can control location sharing through Facebook's own settings. This prevents the platform from sharing your real-time location with others and stops location from being used to personalize your ads.

Practical Takeaway: Go to Settings, find "Personal Information," and review each field. For your email, phone number, and birthday, change the privacy setting to "Friends Only" or "Only Me" depending on how much you want to share. Check your Ad Preferences to see what categories Facebook has created about you, and turn off location access in your device settings if you don't want Facebook tracking where you are.

Understanding Facebook's Data Collection and Third-Party Access

Beyond the information you directly provide to Facebook, the platform collects data about your behavior, your connections, and your interactions across the internet. This guide explains what data Facebook gathers and how you can review and limit some of this collection.

Facebook collects information about your activities on the platform itself—which posts you like, which pages you follow, which ads you click on, and how long you spend viewing different content. This helps Facebook understand your interests and show you content and ads it thinks you'll engage with. Additionally, Facebook collects information about your activities on other websites and apps that use Facebook's tracking tools, such as the "Like" button or Facebook Analytics. This means Facebook knows about your browsing habits even when you're not on Facebook itself.

If you use Facebook to log into other apps or websites, Facebook has information about those services and your activities within them. You can see which apps and websites are connected to your Facebook account by going to Settings and looking for "Apps and Websites." This section shows every app or service that has permission to access your Facebook information. You can remove access to any of these services, which disconnects them from your account.

Facebook also allows other companies and developers to access certain information through Facebook's APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). In the past, this has led to significant privacy concerns, such as the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where a third-party app collected personal data from millions of Facebook users without their knowledge. While Facebook has tightened these controls in recent years, it's still important to understand what permissions you're granting when you use your Facebook account to access other services.

You have the right to request a copy of all the information Facebook has collected about you. You can do this through the "Download Your Information" tool in Settings. This produces a file containing everything from your personal information to a record of all your interactions on the platform. Reviewing this file can be eye-opening, as it shows the extent of data collection many people don't realize is happening.

Practical Takeaway: Go to Settings, find "Apps and Websites," and review the list of connected apps. Remove any apps you
