How to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership Guide

Understanding Planet Fitness Membership Types and Cancellation Options

Planet Fitness offers several membership tiers, each with different terms and cancellation procedures. The most common membership is the Black Card, which provides unlimited access to all Planet Fitness locations, guest privileges, and additional amenities like hydromassage and tanning beds. The standard membership, sometimes called the Classic membership, gives access to your home club only and typically costs less per month. Understanding which membership type you hold is the first step toward cancellation, as different membership levels may have different requirements.

When you signed up for Planet Fitness, you should have received membership documentation that outlines your membership tier and associated terms. This document details the cancellation process specific to your membership type. Planet Fitness memberships typically operate on a month-to-month basis after an initial commitment period, though some promotional offers may include longer commitment periods of 12 or 24 months. Memberships purchased through third-party vendors or special promotions may have different cancellation procedures than those purchased directly from the gym.

The company generally charges a cancellation fee if you terminate your membership during a commitment period, though the amount varies based on your specific membership agreement and how long you've been a member. Some memberships waive cancellation fees if you're canceling within a certain window after enrollment. It's important to review your original membership agreement to understand these specifics for your account.

Practical takeaway: Locate your membership agreement or receipt from Planet Fitness. This document contains the exact terms of your membership, including the commitment period length, monthly fee, and any applicable cancellation fees. Having this information ready before contacting Planet Fitness will make the cancellation process smoother.

In-Person Cancellation at Your Local Club

One of the most direct ways to cancel a Planet Fitness membership is to visit your home club in person and speak with the front desk staff. This method allows you to complete the cancellation process immediately and receive documentation of your request. When you arrive at the gym, ask to speak with a manager or membership representative who can process the cancellation. Bring a valid photo ID and any membership card or documentation you have.

During your visit, the staff member will likely ask why you're canceling. While this question is optional to answer, Planet Fitness sometimes offers retention deals if you explain your reason. For example, if you're canceling due to cost, they might offer a reduced monthly rate. If you're relocating, they might discuss transferring your membership to another location. If you're no longer using the gym, they may propose a freeze on your membership instead of full cancellation, which temporarily halts charges without closing your account.

The staff will have you sign cancellation paperwork that officially terminates your membership. Request a copy of this documentation for your records. This receipt serves as proof that you've canceled and can be useful if charges continue appearing on your billing method after cancellation. Make sure the cancellation date on the paperwork matches your intended end date. Some memberships allow cancellation effective immediately, while others may require you to pay through the end of your current billing cycle.

Practical takeaway: Visit your gym during a less busy time, such as mid-morning on a weekday, to ensure you can speak with a manager without a long wait. Bring your membership ID card and photo identification to speed up the process, and request a printed copy of your cancellation confirmation.

Phone and Email Cancellation Methods

Many Planet Fitness members prefer to cancel their memberships by phone rather than visiting the gym in person. You can reach Planet Fitness customer service by calling the phone number listed on your membership card or on the Planet Fitness website. When you call, have your membership number and billing information ready. The customer service representative will verify your identity and then discuss your membership cancellation request.

Phone cancellations follow a similar retention process to in-person requests. The representative may ask about your reasons for canceling and might offer alternatives such as membership freezes, reduced pricing, or temporary suspensions. Be clear and direct about your intention to cancel if you don't wish to hear retention offers. Ask the representative to confirm the cancellation date and provide a confirmation number for your records. Request that they email you a written cancellation confirmation, which creates a paper trail of your cancellation request.

Email cancellation is possible but less commonly used at Planet Fitness. You can attempt to email your home club directly using the contact information on the Planet Fitness website, or you can use the contact form on their website. However, email cancellations may take longer to process than phone or in-person requests, and you may not receive immediate confirmation. If you choose to cancel by email, keep copies of all correspondence. Email cancellation may not be honored if Planet Fitness doesn't receive or process your message, so follow up after several days if you don't hear back.

Practical takeaway: If canceling by phone, ask the representative to send you a written cancellation confirmation email. Write down the confirmation number and the date you called. If using email, send your cancellation request to multiple contact points (your club and the corporate email) to increase the likelihood it gets processed, and follow up after five business days if you haven't received a response.

Dealing with Cancellation Fees and Commitment Periods

Planet Fitness memberships often include commitment periods, typically ranging from one to two years. If you cancel before this period ends, you may owe a cancellation fee. The amount of this fee varies based on your specific membership agreement and how recently you joined. Some promotions include lower cancellation fees if you're within the first 30 days of membership, while others charge a full early termination fee that can range from $58 to $200 or more, depending on your agreement.

Before requesting cancellation, review your membership documents to understand your specific commitment period and associated fees. If you're unsure about your commitment length, the customer service representative can tell you when your commitment period ends and what fees, if any, would apply to canceling now. If your commitment period has already ended and your membership is now month-to-month, you typically can cancel without penalty fees, though you may still be required to pay through the end of your current billing cycle.

Some situations may qualify for fee waivers. If you're relocating and there's no Planet Fitness location near your new address, you might be able to cancel without fees. If you have a documented medical condition that prevents you from using the gym, Planet Fitness may waive cancellation fees. If you signed up as part of a promotion that later changed, contacting customer service may result in fee adjustments. These situations are handled on a case-by-case basis, and outcomes depend on Planet Fitness's discretion.

Practical takeaway: Calculate whether paying the cancellation fee makes financial sense. If your commitment period is ending within the next two months, it may be cheaper to wait and cancel then rather than pay an early termination fee. If you must cancel immediately, determine the exact cancellation fee amount before proceeding so there are no billing surprises.

Stopping Billing and Payment Methods

After canceling your Planet Fitness membership, charges should stop appearing on your billing method. However, it's important to monitor your account for at least one or two billing cycles after cancellation to ensure no additional charges occur. Keep your cancellation confirmation documentation for reference if you need to dispute any charges. Some members report that charges continued briefly after cancellation due to billing cycle timing or processing delays.

If you provided Planet Fitness with a credit card, debit card, or bank account information for membership payments, you have the option to contact your financial institution to dispute unauthorized charges if they continue after your cancellation date. However, before disputing charges, contact Planet Fitness customer service to explain the situation. There may be a processing error that can be resolved without involving your bank. Keep records of all communication about this issue.

Some members choose to contact their bank or credit card company to revoke Planet Fitness's authorization to charge their account. This creates an additional barrier against accidental charges. You can do this by requesting the removal of an automatic payment authorization, sometimes called a "recurring transaction" authorization. Your financial institution can show you all companies with authorization to charge your account and allow you to remove them.

If you paid for your membership through a third-party service like ClassPass, Costco, or another reseller, contact that vendor about cancellation rather than Planet Fitness directly. These third-party memberships have separate cancellation procedures. Check your membership receipt to see if your membership was purchased through a reseller.

Practical takeaway: Monitor your bank or credit card statements for 60 days after your cancellation. Set a
