How to Change Your iPhone Voicemail Password
Understanding iPhone Voicemail and Password Protection
Your iPhone voicemail is a message system that records calls when you don't answer your phone. This feature has been built into cellular networks since the 1990s and remains one of the most common ways people leave messages for each other. According to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center, approximately 85% of smartphone users still use voicemail regularly, particularly for important business and personal communications.

A voicemail password serves as a security layer protecting your recorded messages. Without this password, someone with physical access to your phone could potentially listen to your voicemail by calling your own number and entering your mailbox. This password typically consists of four to seven digits and acts independently from your phone's main unlock code. Your carrier maintains this password on their servers, separate from your device's local security settings.
The voicemail system works through your cellular carrier—Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or another provider—not through Apple's systems directly. This is an important distinction because changing your voicemail password involves working with your carrier's infrastructure, not your iPhone's settings application. Each carrier maintains slightly different procedures and security protocols for this process.
Most people need to change their voicemail password for one of several reasons: they've forgotten their current password, they suspect someone else knows it, they want to update it as part of regular security maintenance, or they received a new phone and want to establish a new password. According to data from carrier support centers, approximately 40% of password changes occur after users forget their existing password.
Practical Takeaway: Before attempting any password change, write down your carrier name and account phone number. You'll need this information regardless of which method you use to change your password.
Changing Your Voicemail Password Through Your Carrier's Website
Most major carriers offer online account management portals where you can change your voicemail password without calling customer service. This method typically takes 5-10 minutes and can be completed at any time of day. The online approach is often the fastest option for users who remember their current voicemail password, as it doesn't require speaking with a representative.

To change your password online through Verizon, log into your account at verizon.com using your phone number or email address and password. Once logged in, navigate to the "Account" or "My Verizon" section, then look for "Voicemail Settings" or "Phone Settings." Verizon's system will prompt you to enter your current voicemail password first, then create a new one. The new password must be between four and seven digits. Verizon requires that your new password be different from your old one and recommends against using easily guessable sequences like 1234 or your birth year.
AT&T users should visit att.com and sign into their account. Navigate to "Account" and select "Phone Settings," then "Voicemail." AT&T will ask for your current password before allowing you to create a new one. T-Mobile's process is similar—visit t-mobile.com, sign into your account, and look for "Phone Services" or "Voicemail" in your settings menu. All three carriers show confirmation messages once your password has been successfully changed, usually stating something like "Your voicemail password has been updated" or "Changes saved."
Keep in mind that online portals occasionally experience technical issues or maintenance windows. If you receive an error message or cannot access the voicemail settings section, try logging out and logging back in, or try again after a few hours. Some carriers limit how frequently you can change your voicemail password—typically you can only change it once every 24 hours—so plan accordingly if you need to make multiple changes.
Practical Takeaway: Write down your new password in a secure location after making changes online. Many carriers don't display the new password after confirmation, so having your own record prevents confusion later.
Changing Your Voicemail Password by Phone
If you prefer speaking with someone directly or if the online method isn't available, you can change your voicemail password through your carrier's phone-based system. This method has been available for over two decades and remains reliable. You can change your password either by calling your carrier's customer service line or by accessing the automated voicemail system directly from your iPhone.

To use your carrier's automated system, open the Phone app on your iPhone and call your own phone number. Wait for your voicemail greeting to play, then press the asterisk (*) key. The system will prompt you to enter your current voicemail password. After entering it correctly, you'll typically hear a menu with options. Press the key indicated for "Settings" or "Change Password"—this is often the number 3 or 4, depending on your carrier. The system will then guide you through creating a new password, asking you to enter it once, then confirm it by entering it again.
For Verizon users specifically, call 611 from your iPhone or call Verizon's general customer service line at 1-908-559-4899. Tell the representative that you need to change your voicemail password. They'll verify your identity by asking for your account PIN or other identifying information, then they'll either initiate the change directly or transfer you to an automated system. AT&T customers can call 611 or 1-800-331-0500. T-Mobile customers should call 611 or 1-844-839-4534. All three carriers maintain these numbers on their websites if the numbers change.
When calling customer service, have your phone number and account information ready. Representatives typically take 5-15 minutes to process a password change. Some carriers send a text message confirmation after the change is completed. If you don't receive confirmation within 30 minutes, call back to verify the change went through, as occasional system delays can occur.
Practical Takeaway: If calling during business hours (usually Monday-Friday, 8 AM-6 PM in your time zone), wait times are typically shorter. Many carriers offer shorter hold times late morning or early afternoon.
Recovering a Forgotten Voicemail Password
If you've forgotten your voicemail password, you cannot retrieve it directly from Apple or your iPhone—passwords are not stored on the device or displayed anywhere in the system for security reasons. However, your carrier can help you reset it to a temporary password or guide you through creating a new one. This process is straightforward but does require you to verify your identity with your carrier.

The fastest way to recover a forgotten password is through your carrier's online account management portal. Visit your carrier's website and look for a "Forgot Password?" or "Reset" option specifically related to voicemail. Verizon's online system allows you to reset your voicemail password by answering security questions that were established when you created your account, such as your mother's maiden name or the city where you were born. This method can reset your password in minutes without speaking to anyone. AT&T and T-Mobile offer similar security question verification methods through their websites.
If you cannot remember your security questions or don't have access to the email address associated with your account, you'll need to contact customer service by phone. Call your carrier's main line and explain that you've forgotten your voicemail password. A representative will verify your identity using information from your account, such as your full name, phone number, account PIN, and billing address. After verification, they can reset your password to a temporary one that the system will prompt you to change on your next voicemail access. This typically takes 10-20 minutes.
Some carriers require you to change your temporary password immediately by calling back into the voicemail system or accessing it online. Others give you a window of time—usually 24-48 hours—to change the temporary password at your convenience. Write down the temporary password carefully, as representatives read it quickly and errors can lock you out temporarily.
Practical Takeaway: After resetting your password, set a phone reminder to update your security questions or change your password again within a week. This step ensures you can always recover your account in the future.
Security Considerations and Best Practices for Your Voicemail
Your voicemail password protects access to personal messages, business information, and potentially sensitive data.
