How to Factory Reset Your Samsung Tablet
Understanding What a Factory Reset Does to Your Samsung Tablet
A factory reset returns your Samsung tablet to the condition it was in when it left the manufacturing facility. This process wipes all personal data, apps, photos, videos, documents, and settings from your device's storage. When you perform a factory reset, the tablet removes user accounts, browsing history, saved passwords, and any customizations you've made since purchasing or last resetting it.

Samsung tablets store information in internal memory, which is separate from the system files that run the device. The factory reset process clears the internal memory section completely while leaving the operating system intact. This means your tablet will still run Samsung's software, but it won't contain any of your personal information or third-party applications.
Understanding this distinction matters because some people believe a factory reset will remove the Android operating system entirely—it won't. The core software that makes your tablet function remains in place. Only the data you've added gets removed. This is why a factory reset takes 5 to 15 minutes typically, rather than hours—the system isn't being completely reinstalled, just cleared of user content.
Common reasons people perform factory resets include: selling or giving away a tablet, troubleshooting persistent software problems, removing malware or security threats, recovering from a frozen screen, addressing slow performance caused by accumulated data, or preparing the device for a new owner. Some Samsung tablet users also reset their devices when switching to a different Samsung account or when experiencing issues with apps that won't uninstall normally.
Takeaway: Before proceeding with a factory reset, confirm you understand that all personal information will be removed. Consider whether troubleshooting other solutions might address your issue, or whether backing up your data first would serve your needs.
Preparing Your Samsung Tablet Before the Reset Process
Before initiating a factory reset, several preparation steps protect your important information and ensure the process goes smoothly. The most critical step is backing up any data you want to keep. Samsung tablets typically offer multiple backup options through Samsung Cloud, Google Account backup, or third-party cloud services.

To back up your data, open the Settings app and navigate to Accounts and Backup. Samsung tablets running recent software versions have a "Samsung Cloud" or "Google Account" backup option. You can select which types of data to back up: contacts, calendar events, notes, photos stored in Samsung Cloud, and device settings. Google Account backup automatically saves certain app data, contacts, and settings associated with your Google account if you have one configured on the tablet.
For photos and videos stored locally on your tablet, consider transferring them to a computer using a USB cable or uploading them to cloud storage services like Google Photos, OneDrive, or Dropbox. Google Photos offers unlimited backup for photos if you enable it before the reset. This ensures you don't lose irreplaceable family photos or important documents.
You should also write down important information you might need after the reset: email addresses and passwords for accounts you use on the tablet, WiFi network names and passwords (though you can reconfigure WiFi after reset), names of paid apps you've purchased so you can reinstall them later, and any subscription services tied to the device. The Google Play Store will remember your purchases, but having a list helps you reinstall them efficiently.
Finally, ensure your tablet has sufficient battery charge before beginning the reset. The process typically requires 20-30 minutes of uninterrupted time. Plug your tablet into a power adapter and let it charge to at least 80% battery. A low battery during the reset process could interrupt the operation and potentially cause problems. Also, connect to a reliable WiFi network since you may need internet connectivity during or after the reset process.
Takeaway: Spend 15-30 minutes backing up critical data and writing down account information before starting the factory reset. This preparation prevents permanent loss of photos, documents, and settings you might need later.
Factory Reset Method One: Using the Settings Application
The most common and straightforward method for factory resetting a Samsung tablet involves using the built-in Settings application. This method works on nearly all Samsung tablet models running Android 6.0 or newer. Begin by opening the Settings app—typically found in your app drawer or by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the settings gear icon.

Once Settings opens, look for an option labeled "General Management" or simply "Management" depending on your tablet's software version. This menu option typically appears in the main Settings list. Tap on it to reveal additional options. Within General Management, locate the option called "Reset" or "Factory Data Reset." Samsung sometimes labels this as "Reset Mobile Device" or "Restore Factory Settings" on different tablet models.
Tapping the Reset option displays a warning message explaining that the process will delete all data on your device. This screen also typically shows the amount of storage that will be cleared. At the bottom, you'll see buttons—usually "Cancel" and "Reset" or "Delete All." Review the warning message carefully to confirm you're ready to proceed. Tap the Reset button (or Delete All) to confirm your intention.
Some Samsung tablet models require an additional security step. If you have a PIN, pattern lock, or biometric security enabled on your tablet, the system may ask you to enter your PIN or password before confirming the reset. This security measure prevents someone else from resetting your tablet without your knowledge. Enter your security credential when prompted.
After confirmation, the tablet begins the reset process. You'll see a progress bar or status message indicating the device is clearing data. During this time, the screen may go blank, display the Samsung logo, or show a progress indicator. Do not turn off the tablet, remove the battery, or disconnect the power adapter during this process. The reset typically completes within 5-15 minutes, though this varies by model and storage capacity. Once complete, your tablet will restart and display the initial setup screen, just like a brand-new device.
Takeaway: The Settings method is the safest and most reliable approach for most users. It requires no technical knowledge and can be reversed before final confirmation, giving you a last opportunity to cancel the operation.
Factory Reset Method Two: Using Recovery Mode
If your Samsung tablet won't start normally or you can't access the Settings app, you can perform a factory reset using Recovery Mode. This method bypasses the normal operating system and accesses a special menu built into the tablet's hardware. Recovery Mode is particularly useful when your tablet is frozen, won't boot, or has such severe software problems that the Settings application won't open.

To access Recovery Mode, first power off your tablet completely. Some Samsung tablets require you to hold the Power button until a shutdown menu appears and you select "Power Off." Others simply turn off when you hold the Power button. Once fully off, press and hold three buttons simultaneously: Power, Volume Up, and the Home button if your model has one. On tablets without a physical Home button, press Power and Volume Up together. Hold these buttons for 8-10 seconds until you see the Samsung logo or the recovery menu appears.
The Recovery Mode screen displays text options with a message like "Android Recovery" and several menu options. Use the Volume buttons to navigate between options—Volume Up moves up, Volume Down moves down. Find the option that says "Wipe data/factory reset" or "Factory reset." Once highlighted, press the Power button to select it. You'll see a confirmation screen asking if you're sure you want to perform the factory reset.
Use the Volume buttons to navigate to "Yes—delete all user data" and press Power to confirm. The recovery system will then wipe your tablet's storage. During this process, you'll see text scrolling on the screen as the system deletes files. This may take 10-20 minutes depending on how much data your tablet contains. Let the process complete fully without interrupting it.
Once the reset finishes, you'll see a menu screen again. Look for and select "Reboot system now" and press Power. Your tablet will restart into the standard setup screen. Recovery Mode resets function identically to Settings-based resets—they both completely clear your data and restore factory settings. The main difference is that Recovery Mode is accessible even if the normal operating system isn't functioning properly.
Takeaway: Recovery Mode provides a backup reset method when your tablet's software isn't responding normally. However, the process involves more steps and less visual feedback, so use this method only when the Settings approach isn't possible.
