How to Find Your Whirlpool Appliance Age
Understanding Whirlpool Appliance Serial Numbers and Date Codes
Whirlpool Corporation manufactures appliances under several brand names, including Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana. The age of your appliance is encoded in its serial number, which serves as a unique identifier for when and where the unit was manufactured. The serial number contains specific information that allows anyone to decode the manufacturing date without contacting the company or paying for information.

Most Whirlpool appliances have serial numbers printed on a rating plate or sticker located inside the refrigerator, on the back of washers and dryers, or on the side of dishwashers. The location varies by appliance type, but these plates are typically placed where they won't be easily damaged or removed. The serial number format has changed over the decades as Whirlpool updated its manufacturing processes and tracking systems.
The serial number typically consists of letters and numbers in a specific pattern. For appliances manufactured from the 1970s onward, Whirlpool used a system where the first one or two characters indicate the manufacturing date. Understanding this system is the key to determining your appliance's age. The format has remained relatively consistent, though variations exist between different product lines and manufacturing facilities.
Learning to read your Whirlpool serial number requires no special tools or expertise. You only need to locate the serial number and understand the decoding system. This information helps with several practical matters, including understanding warranty coverage periods, determining maintenance schedules, assessing repair costs versus replacement value, and understanding the likely lifespan remaining for your appliance. Knowing the age also helps when researching parts availability and model-specific issues.
Practical Takeaway: Take a photo of your appliance's serial number with your phone and store it in a notes app or cloud storage. This provides a backup reference you can access from anywhere, useful when calling repair technicians or researching your specific model.
The Whirlpool Date Code System Explained
Whirlpool's date coding system uses a combination of letters and numbers that appear at the beginning of the serial number. The most common system uses a letter to represent the month and numbers to represent the year. This system has been in use since approximately the mid-1970s and remains standard on most Whirlpool-brand appliances manufactured today.

The letter code for months follows this pattern: A represents January, B represents February, C represents March, and so on through L representing December. This straightforward approach means that once you identify the first letter in the serial number, you immediately know the manufacturing month. The next one or two digits typically represent the year of manufacture, though the format varies slightly depending on when the appliance was made.
For appliances manufactured between the 1970s and early 2000s, the year portion usually appears as a single digit (0-9), cycling through numbers to represent the decade. For example, a serial number starting with "A3" would indicate January 1973 or 1983 or 1993, depending on the appliance type and when it was likely produced. Newer appliances manufactured in the 2000s onward often use a two-digit year code, such as "A15" for January 2015.
After these initial date indicators, the serial number continues with additional characters that identify the specific factory location, production line, and sequential production number. These additional characters don't indicate age but rather help manufacturers track individual units for quality control and warranty purposes. Understanding that only the first letter and following one or two digits matter for determining age simplifies the decoding process significantly.
Practical Takeaway: Create a simple reference card with the month letters (A-L) and keep it near your phone or in a notes app. When you find a serial number, you can immediately identify the month without guessing or searching online each time.
Locating Your Appliance's Serial Number
Finding the serial number on your Whirlpool appliance requires knowing where manufacturers typically place these identification plates. The location varies significantly by appliance type, and spending a few minutes searching prevents frustration and ensures you find the correct number. Whirlpool deliberately places serial numbers in protected areas to prevent damage and ensure longevity of the marking.

For refrigerators, the serial number plate is typically located on the interior wall, usually on the left side or back wall of the fridge compartment. Look for a small white or silver label with printed text and numbers. Some refrigerators have the plate on the exterior back wall, though this is less common. You may need to remove shelves or drawers to access it clearly. For older models, the plate might be under the refrigerator or on the interior of the toe kick area.
Washing machines and dryers most commonly have their serial numbers on the back or side of the unit. You may need to pull the appliance away from the wall slightly to access it. The plate is usually a metal or plastic label riveted or adhesive-mounted to the exterior. For top-loading washers, check the area around the lid edge or the back panel. Front-loading washers typically have the plate on the front frame near the door or on the back panel.
Dishwashers present a different challenge because the serial number is often hidden inside. Check along the top edge of the door frame on the interior or on the side wall inside the dishwasher. Some Whirlpool dishwashers have the plate on the exterior bottom edge or on the interior of the door itself. Microwave ovens typically have the plate on the back or bottom. Ranges and ovens usually have the plate on the back wall of the unit or sometimes on the side. If you cannot locate the plate after checking common areas, consulting your user manual or product documentation provides specific location information for your model.
Practical Takeaway: Before searching, gather a flashlight and perhaps a mirror. These tools help you see into dark corners or read labels that face away from easy viewing angles. Having good lighting dramatically reduces search time.
Decoding Your Serial Number Step by Step
Once you've located and written down your complete serial number, you can decode it by following a simple process. This method works for the majority of Whirlpool appliances manufactured from the 1970s forward. Start by looking at the very first character in the serial number—this is your month indicator.

Write down what month the first letter represents using the standard A-through-L system (A=January through L=December). Next, examine the character or characters immediately following this first letter. These typically represent the year. For appliances from recent decades, this might be two digits, such as "15" for 2015. For older appliances, it might be a single digit that cycles through 0-9, representing units within a ten-year range.
To narrow down the year for older appliances with single-digit year codes, you need additional information. Research when your model was typically produced by looking up your complete model number (found on the same plate as the serial number). Whirlpool model numbers often indicate the product line and general era. You can search for your model number online to find information about when it was in production, which helps you determine the correct decade for your appliance.
Let's work through an example. If a serial number reads "B8J456789XYZ," you would identify "B" as February (the second month). The "8" following it would represent 1978, 1988, 1998, or 2008, depending on the model's production timeframe. If you know from researching your model that it was produced in the 1990s, you can conclude this appliance was manufactured in February 1998. Some newer appliances simplify this by using two-digit years, so "B15" would clearly indicate February 2015.
Practical Takeaway: Write down your findings in a permanent location, such as on the appliance itself with a waterproof label or in a household inventory document stored digitally. This prevents losing the information and helps future homeowners or repair technicians understand your appliance's age.
Variations Across Different Whirlpool Brand Appliances
While Whirlpool Corporation uses consistent dating principles across its brands, slight variations exist depending on which brand manufactured your appliance and when it was made. Understanding these variations prevents confusion when decoding serial numbers from different appliance types or brands. Whirlpool owns multiple appliance brands including
