How to Pull a Submersible Well Pump Guide

Understanding Submersible Well Pump Basics

A submersible well pump sits underwater inside your well and pushes water up to your home or property. Unlike jet pumps that sit above ground, submersible pumps are fully submerged, which makes them more efficient and quieter. The pump motor is sealed in a waterproof housing that protects it from corrosion and damage. When you need to pull a submersible pump, you're removing it from the well for maintenance, repair, or replacement.

Most residential submersible pumps range from 25 to 100 feet deep, though some can reach 300 feet or more. The depth matters significantly when planning your pump removal. A pump at 30 feet requires different equipment and preparation than one at 150 feet. The pump is connected to the surface by a drop pipe (the conduit carrying water up) and an electrical cable. Understanding how these components connect helps you plan the pulling process safely.

Submersible pumps typically last 8 to 15 years depending on water quality, usage patterns, and maintenance. Common reasons for pulling include addressing sediment buildup, replacing worn internal parts, repairing electrical connections, or upgrading to a higher-capacity model. Sand and minerals in groundwater gradually damage pump components, making periodic removal necessary. Hard water areas may need more frequent service.

The motor in a submersible pump uses between 0.5 and 3 horsepower for most residential wells. The pump's flow rate indicates how many gallons per minute it can deliver—typically between 5 and 25 gallons per minute for household wells. These specifications matter because they help you understand what you're working with and whether rental equipment will handle the job. Before starting any work, locate your pump's model number and documentation, usually found on a metal plate attached to the motor housing.

Practical Takeaway: Document your pump's specifications, including depth rating, horsepower, flow rate, and age. Take photos of how the electrical cable and drop pipe connect at the surface. This information guides your pulling strategy and helps equipment rental companies provide appropriate tools.

Safety Considerations and Required Precautions

Pulling a submersible pump involves significant safety hazards that demand careful planning. The electrical system poses the most serious risk—a pump motor typically operates at 240 volts, which can be fatal. Before any work begins, shut off power at the breaker and verify it's off using a voltage tester. Never assume the power is off without testing. Even with the breaker off, residual electrical charge can remain in the system, so use a voltage tester specifically designed for well pump circuits to confirm the absence of electrical current.

The well opening itself presents multiple hazards. Well caps exist for important reasons: they prevent contamination, keep children and animals from falling in, and block debris from entering the system. When you open the well, you expose yourself to confined space conditions. Hydrogen sulfide gas or other gases can accumulate in wells, creating asphyxiation risk. These gases may have no smell or warning signs. Never work alone when pulling a pump. Have a second person present to call for help if something goes wrong and to assist with heavy lifting. Consider having a third person available to monitor from ground level and manage equipment.

The pump itself is extremely heavy. A typical 2-horsepower submersible pump weighs 40 to 80 pounds, and when wet and covered in sediment, it can weigh significantly more. Pulling this weight from depths of 50 to 150 feet requires proper mechanical advantage. Attempting to hand-pull a deep pump risks dropping it, which damages the pump and creates a hazard. Your hands, wrists, and back are vulnerable to serious injury during the pulling process. Proper rigging with pulleys and lifting equipment distributes the load safely.

Weather conditions affect safety considerably. Rain makes surfaces slippery, and wind can destabilize equipment around the well opening. Work during calm, dry weather when possible. Hypothermia risk increases if you're working near water for extended periods in cool weather. Hydration is critical—dehydration impairs judgment during physically demanding work. Have water available and take regular breaks, especially during hot weather.

Practical Takeaway: Create a written safety plan before you start. Include steps for shutting off electrical power, confirming it's off with a voltage tester, having at least two people present, and arranging weather conditions that support safe work. Identify the location of your electrical breaker and keep the voltage tester nearby. Review this plan with anyone helping you.

Gathering Tools and Equipment

Pulling a submersible pump requires specific equipment, and most homeowners rent rather than purchase these tools. The primary piece of equipment is a pipe puller or rope puller system. Manual pullers work with hand-operated hydraulics or mechanical advantage, while motorized systems use electric or gas power. For shallow wells under 30 feet, a hand-operated cable puller may suffice. Deeper wells typically need a motorized puller that can generate several hundred pounds of pulling force. Rent these from equipment rental companies—expect to pay between $75 and $200 per day depending on the puller's capacity and your location.

You'll need sturdy rigging hardware to connect the pump to the puller. This includes a cable or chain rated for at least 200 percent of your pump's weight, meaning a pump weighing 50 pounds needs rigging rated for 100 pounds minimum. Use a two-point rigging approach, which means two connection points on the pump housing rather than one. This prevents tilting and keeps the pump stable during the pull. Hardware includes shackles (U-shaped metal devices), eyebolts, and a spreader bar to distribute the load. All rigging hardware must be rated for the expected load. Using undersized rigging risks failure and injury.

A tripod stand positioned over the well opening provides the anchor point for your puller. Professional tripods cost $1,000 to $3,000, but rental tripods cost $40 to $80 per day. The tripod must sit on level ground, and legs should be as far apart as the space allows to provide stable support. Never improvise a tripod using boards or makeshift structures—this is a common cause of well pump pulling accidents. The tripod supports hundreds of pounds suspended over the well opening.

Basic hand tools you likely have at home include adjustable wrenches, socket sets, screwdrivers, and pipe wrenches. Electrical work requires a voltage tester—this is not optional and costs $15 to $50 for a basic model. You'll also need a bucket, towels, and containers to hold bolts and small components as you disconnect things. Wear work gloves rated for wet conditions, steel-toed boots, and long pants. A hard hat protects against impacts from equipment or components. Safety glasses protect your eyes from splashing water or sediment.

Practical Takeaway: Visit equipment rental companies in your area 3 to 5 days before you plan to work. Ask about motorized pipe pullers rated for your pump's weight and well depth. Get pricing for one or more days of rental. Confirm the rental includes all connections needed to attach to your specific pump type. Make a checklist of hand tools and safety gear you need to gather from home.

Disconnecting Electrical Power and Supply Lines

Before touching the pump, disconnect all electrical power and shut off water flow. Turn off the breaker that controls your well pump at the main electrical panel. Once the breaker is off, use a voltage tester to confirm there is no electrical current at the pump. Place the voltage tester's probes on the bare wire connections at the pump's motor. If the tester indicates no voltage, the power is off. If it shows voltage, contact a licensed electrician—this means the power cannot be safely isolated, and professional help is necessary. Never proceed without confirming the absence of electrical current.

If your system has a pressure tank, shut off the isolation valve between the tank and the well. This prevents water from flowing backward into the well while you're working. If no isolation valve exists, locate the valve at the main water line entering your house and close it. This stops the pump from receiving pressure signals that might cause it to start. The pump has a pressure switch that triggers when pressure drops; removing this signal is essential for safe work. Have a helper watch the pressure gauge if one is visible and confirm pressure is dropping as you close valves.
