How to Start an AAU Basketball Team Guide

Understanding AAU Basketball and Organizational Structure

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is a national nonprofit organization that governs youth sports programs across the United States. Founded in 1888, the AAU currently sanctions basketball programs for young athletes ranging from elementary school age through high school. Understanding what AAU basketball represents is the first step toward starting your own team.

AAU basketball operates differently from school-based programs. School teams typically play during the traditional season and follow state high school athletic association rules. AAU teams, by contrast, compete year-round with more flexibility in scheduling and can draw players from multiple schools. This structure allows young athletes to develop skills outside the school season and compete against teams from across the country.

The AAU organizational hierarchy works as follows: Individual teams operate under AAU sanctioning, regions oversee multiple teams within geographic areas, and a national organization manages overall policies and national championships. When you start a team, you'll be working within this framework, following national AAU rules while being part of a regional structure that manages local competitions.

As of 2023, the AAU sanctions over 100,000 youth athletes nationally across all sports, with basketball being one of the largest programs. Youth participation in AAU basketball has grown by approximately 15-20% over the past five years, reflecting increased demand for competitive developmental opportunities.

AAU teams come in different formations: Travel teams compete regionally and nationally, requiring significant time and financial commitment. Recreational AAU teams offer more local competition with less travel. Understanding which model fits your community's needs will shape your team structure.

Practical Takeaway: Before moving forward, research existing AAU programs in your region to understand the competitive landscape. Visit the official AAU website (aausports.org) to review your state's regional structure and see what age divisions are most active in your area.

Meeting Legal Requirements and Registration

Starting an AAU basketball team requires completing specific legal and registration steps. These requirements exist to protect young athletes and maintain organizational standards across all AAU programs.

First, you must register your team with your state's AAU basketball office. Each state maintains a separate AAU organization with its own director and staff. Contact information for your state's AAU office is located on the national AAU website. The registration process typically involves submitting team information including the team name, coach names, and the age division or grade level your team will represent.

Most states charge registration fees for new teams, typically ranging from $100-$300 annually, though specific amounts vary by state. This fee covers sanctions that allow your team to compete in AAU-sanctioned events and access to state tournaments. Some states require separate registration for each age group or division if you plan to field multiple teams.

AAU requires that all coaching staff complete background checks before working with youth athletes. This is a mandatory safety requirement, not optional. Background checks typically cost $25-$50 per person and take 5-10 business days to process. You'll need to provide personal identification information and authorize the search through your state's AAU office.

Your team must obtain liability insurance through either the AAU or an independent provider. AAU-provided insurance typically costs $200-$400 annually per team and covers injuries that occur during sanctioned competitions and practices. Some states allow teams to obtain equivalent coverage through private insurance companies, but coverage must meet AAU minimums.

You'll also need to establish a coaching certification plan. While not always required immediately, AAU recommends that head coaches hold current CPR certification and basic first aid training. Many states increasingly require coaches to complete youth basketball instruction certifications as well. The American Heart Association offers CPR certification through local hospitals and training centers for $60-$100, with validity for two years.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of registration steps in order: (1) Contact your state AAU office, (2) Complete and submit team registration, (3) Schedule background checks for all coaches, (4) Obtain liability insurance, (5) Document CPR/first aid certifications. Plan 3-4 weeks for this process before your first practice.

Building Your Coaching Staff and Creating Team Structure

A successful AAU team requires more than just a head coach. Depending on your team's age group and competitive level, you may need multiple coaches with different responsibilities. Understanding these roles helps you build a complete staff.

The head coach serves as the primary decision-maker for practice planning, game strategy, and player development. For travel teams competing at higher levels, head coaches typically have significant basketball experience, sometimes including college or semi-professional play. Head coaches are responsible for maintaining AAU compliance, submitting rosters, and representing the team at league meetings. Many head coaches also handle administrative tasks like scheduling and communication with families.

Assistant coaches focus on specific skill development areas. Larger teams might have separate assistants for guards, forwards, and centers. Assistant coaches also help manage practices, work with reserve players, and provide feedback during games. For AAU travel teams, assistant coaches often have college basketball experience or have played competitive youth basketball themselves.

Strength and conditioning coaches are becoming more common on competitive AAU teams, particularly at the middle and high school levels. These specialists design off-court training programs focused on building athletic ability, injury prevention, and conditioning. Some teams share a strength coach across multiple age groups to reduce costs.

Athletic trainers or team medical coordinators manage player injuries and coordinate with parents about medical concerns. While not every team has dedicated trainers, teams should establish relationships with local sports medicine professionals who can quickly address injuries. This person keeps records of player injuries and treatment protocols.

Administrative staff handle non-coaching responsibilities. This might include one person managing team communications, registration paperwork, and travel logistics. As your team grows, you might separate these duties. Many AAU teams rely on parent volunteers for administrative roles, though some travel teams employ paid administrative staff.

When recruiting coaches, prioritize basketball knowledge and background check clearance above all else. A coach's playing history matters less than their ability to teach skills and communicate with young athletes. Create a clear job description for each coaching position outlining responsibilities, time commitments, and expectations.

Practical Takeaway: Start by identifying your head coach—preferably someone with basketball experience and strong organizational skills. Then determine additional roles needed based on your team's age group and competitive level. Document each role's responsibilities and time commitment to set clear expectations.

Recruiting Players and Forming Your Roster

Building your initial roster requires strategy. Unlike school teams that draw players from a single district, AAU teams actively recruit from their service area, which might cover an entire county or multi-county region depending on your competitive level.

Start by identifying your team's competitive level and age division. AAU divides youth basketball into age groups: U10 (under 10 years old), U12, U14, U16, and U18, with some states also offering grade-based divisions for older students. Elite travel teams at U14 and higher compete regionally and nationally, requiring players with significant prior basketball experience. Developmental travel teams serve players working to reach elite levels. Recreational teams focus on fundamentals and local competition for players at all skill levels.

Determine how many players you need. Competitive travel teams typically roster 12-15 players to account for injuries and absences over a long season. Younger age groups sometimes have smaller rosters. Check your state's AAU rules for roster maximums and minimums, as these vary.

Recruitment methods vary by competitive level. Elite teams often recruit experienced players from school programs and other AAU teams through direct coach outreach. Coaches at this level attend showcases and tournaments to identify prospects. Developmental and recreational teams typically use public outreach including social media, school flyers, community center postings, and word-of-mouth referrals.

Create a team website or social media page describing your program, coaching staff, practice schedule, and competitive level. Include contact information for inquiries. Many families learn about AAU teams through online searches and social platforms before making commitment decisions.

Host open tryouts if appropriate for your competitive level. Recreational and developmental teams often hold open tryouts where interested players can showcase skills. Elite teams may limit tryouts to players with specific experience levels. Set clear evaluation criteria before tryouts begin, focusing on fundamental skills, athleticism, basketball IQ, and coachability rather than just size or current ability.

When recruiting, be transparent about time commitments and financial requirements. AAU families need to understand practice frequency (typically 2-4 times
