How to Turn Off Closed Captions on Netflix

Understanding Netflix Closed Captions and Why You Might Want to Turn Them Off

Closed captions on Netflix display text versions of dialogue, sound effects, and music descriptions at the bottom of your screen. Many Netflix users turn on closed captions for various reasons—watching in noisy environments, hearing accessibility needs, or learning a new language. However, not everyone wants captions visible all the time. Some viewers find them distracting, prefer watching without text overlays, or want to save screen space on smaller devices.

Netflix offers closed caption options across all subscription tiers, from Basic to Premium plans. The service supports captions in over 190 languages and regularly updates its caption quality and availability. As of recent data, approximately 80 percent of Netflix viewers have used captions at some point, though many toggle them on and off depending on their viewing situation.

The process of turning off captions differs slightly depending on which device you use. Netflix captions can be managed through your account settings on computers and phones, or through on-screen controls while actively watching content. Understanding which method works for your specific device prevents confusion and saves time.

Closed captions differ from subtitles in one key way: captions include descriptions of sounds and music, while subtitles typically only show translated dialogue. Netflix uses the term "closed captions" for its accessibility feature, though the distinction matters mainly to users who need detailed audio descriptions.

Practical takeaway: Before adjusting caption settings, determine whether you want to turn captions off for one viewing session or permanently disable them across all content. This distinction guides which method you should use on your device.

Turning Off Captions on Desktop and Web Browsers

If you watch Netflix through a web browser on a computer, you have several methods to control captions. The quickest approach involves using the on-screen player controls during active playback. When you start playing any show or movie, move your mouse toward the bottom of the video player—this reveals the playback controls including play/pause, volume, progress bar, and a settings icon (gear symbol) on the right side.

Click on the settings icon (gear) to open a dropdown menu with several options. You will see "Subtitles/CC" listed in this menu. Click on that option, and a submenu appears showing available caption languages and an option labeled "Off." Selecting "Off" immediately removes captions from your current viewing session. This method only affects the show or movie you are currently watching—captions will return to their previous setting for the next title you play.

For a more permanent solution that turns off captions across all Netflix content, access your account settings through the web interface. Click your profile icon in the top right corner of the Netflix homepage. From the dropdown menu, select "Account." This takes you to your account management page. Look for a section labeled "Playback settings" and click on it. Within this section, you will find options for default subtitle language and caption preferences. Set subtitles to "Off" or "None" to prevent captions from appearing automatically on future content.

Note that Netflix remembers these settings per profile, not globally across your account. If multiple people use different profiles on your Netflix account, each person's caption preference remains independent. Changes you make in one profile do not affect how captions appear for other users.

Practical takeaway: Use the on-screen settings gear icon for quick, temporary caption removal during one viewing session. Use account playback settings for permanent changes that apply to future content on your specific profile.

Disabling Captions on Phones and Tablets

The Netflix mobile app for smartphones and tablets functions slightly differently from the web version. To turn off captions while watching on your phone or tablet, start playing any content and look for the three-dot menu icon (also called the "more" button) typically located in the upper right corner of your screen. On some devices, this button appears as vertical dots; on others, it may appear as three horizontal lines (a "hamburger" menu).

Tap the three-dot menu to reveal playback options. Select "Subtitles/CC" from the available choices. A menu displays all available subtitle languages along with an "Off" option. Tap "Off" to remove captions from your current viewing. Like the web method, this only affects your immediate viewing session.

To permanently turn off captions on your mobile device, open the Netflix app and navigate to "More" at the bottom of the screen (this usually appears as an icon with three horizontal lines or dots). Select "Account," then choose your profile. Find "Playback settings" and look for the subtitle options. Change your default subtitle setting to "Off." This prevents captions from appearing when you start new content on your mobile device.

Mobile devices sometimes have additional system-level accessibility settings that can override Netflix's caption settings. On iPhones and iPads, check Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captions to ensure system-wide captioning is turned off if you want complete control. On Android devices, go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions to adjust system-wide caption preferences. These system settings may force captions on regardless of your Netflix app settings.

Practical takeaway: For mobile viewing, tap the three-dot menu during playback for quick caption removal. Check your phone's accessibility settings if captions remain visible even after disabling them in the Netflix app itself.

Managing Captions on Smart TVs and Streaming Devices

Smart TVs and streaming devices like Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, and Chromecast require a different approach for controlling captions. Start by playing any content on your device. Most streaming devices show playback controls when you press a button on your remote—usually the down arrow, select button, or a designated "menu" button. This reveals options including play/pause controls and additional settings.

Look for a "Subtitles," "CC," or "Settings" option among the playback controls. On Roku devices, press the asterisk (*) button on your remote to access the options panel. On Amazon Fire Stick, press the menu button and look for subtitle options. On Apple TV, swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the control center, then select the subtitle option. The exact location varies by device, but all mainstream streaming devices provide caption controls directly from the playback screen.

Once you access the subtitle menu, select "Off" or "None" to disable captions for your current viewing session. If you want to change your default caption setting for all future content on your streaming device, return to the Netflix app's main menu and access account settings. Navigate to "Playback settings" and change your subtitle preference to "Off." This change only affects the Netflix profile and device combination you are using.

Some streaming devices have their own system-level accessibility settings that may conflict with Netflix settings. Check your device's main settings menu for caption or accessibility options. On most devices, turning off system-level captions should allow Netflix's app settings to take full control of what appears on screen.

Practical takeaway: Use your remote's designated button (often the asterisk, menu, or down arrow) to access caption controls on smart TVs. Adjust device-level accessibility settings if captions persist despite Netflix app settings being turned off.

Troubleshooting When Captions Won't Turn Off

Occasionally, users encounter situations where captions remain visible even after selecting "Off." Several factors can cause this issue. First, verify that you actually selected "Off" in the subtitle menu—sometimes the menu closes without registering your selection, or you may have selected a language instead of the off option. Return to the playback settings and confirm your choice was saved.

Second, check whether multiple settings are conflicting. Some devices have captions controlled at the system level, the app level, and sometimes through account settings all at once. If your phone's accessibility settings have captions turned on, they may override Netflix's app setting. Similarly, some televisions have built-in caption features that activate regardless of what the streaming app is doing. Disable captions at all levels—device system settings, app settings, and account settings—to ensure they turn off completely.

Third, confirm you are making changes to the correct profile if your account has multiple user profiles. Netflix remembers settings separately for each profile. If someone else's profile has captions enabled by default, switching to that profile will display captions even if you disabled them on your own profile. Always verify which profile you are currently using before adjusting settings.
