Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that a dentist places into your jawbone. The implant serves as a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges that sit on top of your gums, implants are anchored directly into the bone beneath your gums.

The implant itself is a small screw, usually about the size of a natural tooth root. Over several months, the bone in your jaw grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration. This creates a strong, stable bond between the implant and your bone. Once the bone has grown around the implant, your dentist attaches an abutment—a connector piece—to the top of the implant. A crown, which is a realistic-looking artificial tooth, then attaches to the abutment.
In Berkeley, many dental practices offer implant treatment. The procedure typically takes several months from start to finish, though the actual surgery is relatively quick. Most implant surgeries take between 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how many implants you need and the complexity of your case.
Dental implants have several advantages over other tooth replacement options. They preserve bone density in your jaw because they stimulate the bone, just like natural tooth roots do. This helps maintain the shape of your face and prevents the sunken appearance that can happen with missing teeth. Implants also do not require grinding down healthy neighboring teeth, which is necessary for dental bridges. Many people find that implants feel more comfortable and natural than dentures because they do not move or require adhesive.
Practical takeaway: Before considering implants, it helps to understand the basic structure and timeline. Implants require several months of healing, so plan accordingly if you are thinking about this option for yourself or a family member.
Different Types of Dental Implants Available in Berkeley
Several types of dental implants exist, and your situation will determine which might work for you. The most common type is the endosteal implant, which is surgically placed directly into the jawbone. This type typically has the shape of a small screw or cylinder. Endosteal implants work well for most people and have high success rates.

Another option is the subperiosteal implant. This type sits on top of the jawbone but beneath the gum tissue. Dentists use this approach when a patient does not have enough bone height or depth for an endosteal implant. The subperiosteal implant has a metal framework that fits over the bone, with posts that extend through the gums to hold the replacement teeth.
All-on-4 implants represent another approach that some Berkeley dental offices offer. This technique uses four implants to support a full arch of replacement teeth—either upper, lower, or both. The four implants are strategically positioned to maximize support and stability. This option can be less costly than placing individual implants for each missing tooth, and it requires less bone, making it useful for people who have experienced significant bone loss.
Zygomatic implants are a specialized option used when significant upper jawbone loss has occurred. These implants are longer than standard implants and anchor into the cheekbone instead of the upper jaw. Very few dentists in the Berkeley area perform this procedure, so you may need to seek specialized care if this option is recommended for you.
Mini implants are smaller versions of standard implants and may be used to support dentures or in cases where bone space is limited. They cost less than standard implants but are generally considered less sturdy for long-term use.
Practical takeaway: The type of implant recommended depends on your bone structure, the number of missing teeth, and your overall health. Schedule a consultation with a Berkeley dentist to discuss which type might suit your situation.
The Dental Implant Process: Step-by-Step Timeline
Getting a dental implant involves several stages spread over several months. Understanding this timeline helps you prepare mentally and practically for the procedure ahead.

The first step is a thorough examination and consultation. Your dentist will review your medical history, take X-rays, and possibly take a CT scan to examine your jawbone in detail. This appointment allows the dentist to assess whether you have enough bone to support an implant and to discuss your expectations and concerns. Some people need bone grafting before implant placement if their jawbone is too thin or short.
Bone grafting, if needed, is a separate procedure that must heal before implant placement. The grafting process can take anywhere from four to twelve months, depending on the amount of bone that needs to be rebuilt. During this time, your body slowly regenerates bone in the grafted area.
Once your jawbone is ready, the surgical placement of the implant occurs. Your dentist will make an incision in your gum to expose the bone. They then carefully create a space in the bone and insert the titanium implant. The gum is stitched closed, and the implant begins the osseointegration process. This healing phase typically lasts three to six months for the lower jaw and four to six months for the upper jaw, though some people heal faster or slower than average.
After osseointegration is complete, a second minor surgery may be needed to place the abutment, though some implants have the abutment attached during the initial placement. Finally, your dentist takes impressions and creates your crown. The crown is custom-made to match your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. Once completed, the crown is attached to the abutment.
Throughout this entire process, you will have multiple appointments for examinations, X-rays, impressions, and adjustments. Most Berkeley dental offices schedule these appointments several weeks apart to allow for proper healing between stages.
Practical takeaway: Plan for a commitment of at least six to nine months from initial consultation to completed implant. Having this timeline in mind helps you coordinate with work, family, and other commitments.
Cost Considerations and What Factors Affect Implant Pricing
Dental implant costs in Berkeley vary widely depending on several factors. On average, a single implant with crown and abutment can cost between $3,000 and $6,500. However, this is an estimate, and your actual cost may be higher or lower.

The type of implant affects cost. Standard endosteal implants are usually the least expensive option. Specialized options like all-on-4 implants or zygomatic implants may have different pricing structures. All-on-4 implants for a full arch of teeth typically cost between $15,000 and $25,000, though this price covers multiple implants and teeth rather than a single tooth.
Whether you need bone grafting adds significant cost. A bone graft can add $500 to $3,000 or more to your total bill, depending on the amount of grafting needed. Some complex cases require additional procedures like sinus lifts for upper jaw implants, which also add to the cost.
The number of implants you need affects your total cost. A single implant costs less than multiple implants, but the cost per implant may decrease slightly if you need several at once. Some people need multiple implants to support bridges or dentures rather than individual crowns on each implant.
Your dentist's experience and training influence pricing. Dentists who have received advanced training in implant surgery or who have placed thousands of implants may charge differently than general dentists newer to implant work. Berkeley has both general dentists offering implants and specialists who focus exclusively on implant dentistry.
Most dental insurance plans do not cover implants because they are often classified as cosmetic rather than necessary. However, some plans offer partial coverage if the implant is replacing a tooth lost due to injury or disease. Contact your insurance company to understand your specific coverage. Many Berkeley dental offices offer payment plans or financing options to make implants more affordable.
Practical takeaway: Obtain detailed cost estimates from at least two dentists in Berkeley. Ask for a breakdown of costs including the implant itself, abutment, crown, any necessary bone grafting, and follow-up appointments. This information helps you budget and compare your options.
