Learn About Finding Burial Locations Information Guide

Understanding Different Types of Burial Location Records

Burial location information comes in many forms, and understanding what types of records exist can help you search more effectively. Cemetery records are the most common source, maintained by individual cemeteries and burial grounds. These records typically include the deceased person's name, date of burial, plot location within the cemetery, and sometimes the date of death. Some cemeteries keep detailed records spanning over 100 years, while others may have limited documentation.

Gravestone inscriptions provide another valuable source of burial information. When you visit a cemetery in person, you can read headstones, markers, and monuments that often contain the person's name, birth year, death year, and sometimes additional family information. Many cemeteries have also begun photographing gravestone inscriptions and making them available online through various genealogy databases.

Church burial records represent another important category. Many religious institutions, including Christian denominations, Jewish synagogues, and other faith communities, maintain their own burial grounds and record-keeping systems. These records may include additional information such as the person's parish membership, clergy who performed services, or family connections to the congregation.

Newspaper death notices and obituaries can indicate where someone was buried or will be buried. These announcements often mention the cemetery name and sometimes the specific plot location. Historical newspapers are increasingly available through digital archives, making them searchable resources for burial information from the past 150+ years.

County and municipal records sometimes maintain burial registries or cemetery records. Health departments may have records of burials, especially for more recent deaths within the last several decades. These government records can provide official documentation of burial locations.

Practical Takeaway: Start by identifying which type of burial record is most likely to exist for the person you're researching. If they were buried in the last 30 years, cemetery records and obituaries are your best starting points. For historical burials, church records and gravestone inscriptions become increasingly valuable as other documentation may no longer exist.

How to Search Cemetery Records and Databases

Cemetery databases have expanded dramatically over the past two decades. Major genealogy websites such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org contain millions of burial records from cemeteries across North America and beyond. FamilySearch, operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, offers many records for free. These databases typically allow you to search by the deceased person's name, cemetery name, and date range, making it possible to locate burial information without leaving your home.

Local cemetery websites often provide their own searchable databases. Many cemeteries now maintain online records that allow visitors to search for specific graves, view plot maps, and sometimes see photographs of headstones. You can typically find a cemetery's website by searching for the cemetery name plus "burial records" or "cemetery records" online. Some smaller cemeteries may not have online databases, but they often have office staff who can search their records by phone or email.

Finding aid websites like BillionGraves and Find a Grave aggregate burial information from thousands of cemeteries. These crowdsourced databases include photographs of headstones, plot maps, and burial dates contributed by volunteers and cemetery visitors. While not every cemetery or burial is represented in these databases, they collectively contain millions of records and continue to grow.

State and regional archives sometimes maintain burial records or indexes. The National Archives and Records Administration holds burial records for certain military cemeteries. Many states have historical societies that have compiled burial records for their region, and these resources may be searchable online or through visiting the archive in person.

Subscription genealogy websites require a paid membership but offer access to large collections of indexed burial records, which can speed up your search. These sites often combine cemetery records with census data, obituaries, and other documents that may help you locate a specific burial or confirm a location.

Practical Takeaway: Begin your burial record search with free resources like FamilySearch and the cemetery's own website. If those yield no results, broaden your search to regional databases and aggregator sites. For cemeteries without online presence, contact them directly during business hours for personal assistance with their records.

Using Obituaries and Death Notices to Find Burial Information

Obituaries and death notices are valuable documents that frequently mention burial locations, often with specific cemetery names and sometimes plot numbers or section information. The difference between the two is important: a death notice is a factual announcement of someone's death, typically placed by the family or funeral home, while an obituary is a biographical article about the deceased that may include more personal details. Both types of announcements typically appear in local newspapers within a few days of death.

Historical newspaper archives have become increasingly accessible through projects like Chronicling America, a collaboration between the Library of Congress and state historical societies. This free resource contains digitized newspapers from across the United States dating back to the 1700s. You can search for a person's name and death year to find death announcements that specify burial locations. Many of these newspapers have full-text search capabilities, allowing you to find relevant articles by keyword.

Local library newspaper collections sometimes extend beyond what appears in online archives. Many public libraries maintain microfilm copies of historical newspapers specific to their region. Librarians can help you search these collections and may be able to make copies of relevant articles. Some libraries have also digitized their newspaper collections and made them searchable online.

For more recent deaths, newspaper websites and genealogy database subscriptions maintain searchable obituary archives covering the past 20-50 years depending on the publication. These records often include the cemetery name, funeral home information, and surviving family members who may themselves be searchable in other records.

Death notices in ethnic newspapers, religious publications, and fraternal organization newsletters sometimes provided more detailed information than mainstream newspapers. These specialized publications may mention burial customs, the specific religious burial ground, or family connections that clarify the burial location. Finding these publications requires searching library catalogs and specialized ethnic heritage databases.

Practical Takeaway: Start with your local library's newspaper collection and Chronicling America for historical death announcements. For recent deaths, search the obituary sections of local newspapers online. Note all cemetery names mentioned, as some obituaries may reference both the funeral service location and the burial location, which can be different places.

Visiting Cemeteries and Reading Gravestone Information

Physical cemetery visits remain one of the most direct ways to locate and document burial information. When visiting a cemetery, the first step should be checking in at the cemetery office, where staff can provide you with a map showing burial plots and can often point you toward the specific grave you're seeking. Many cemeteries organize their records by section and lot number, and office staff can quickly translate a person's name into their location within the grounds. This information is typically provided at no cost, though some cemeteries may charge a fee for detailed record searches.

Once you locate a grave, gravestone inscriptions provide information carved or engraved into the stone. Common information includes the deceased person's full name, birth year, death year, and sometimes additional text such as a brief epitaph, religious symbol, or family relationship descriptions. Stone condition can affect readability; older stones may be worn and difficult to read, while weather and lichen growth can further obscure text. Techniques such as making rubbings with paper and charcoal, or photographing the stone from multiple angles, can help you capture information that may not be immediately visible.

Cemetery layout and organization tell their own story. Many cemeteries organize graves by section, often named by theme or alphabetically. Some sections were designated for specific religious or ethnic groups, reflecting historical burial practices. Military sections typically have standardized government-issue headstones arranged in neat rows. Understanding how a cemetery is organized can help you navigate efficiently and locate related family members who may be buried nearby.

Documentation practices at gravesites reveal historical changes in burial customs. Older cemeteries often have hand-carved stones with varying sizes and styles, while Victorian-era cemeteries may feature elaborate monuments and sculptural elements. More recent sections typically have flat markers flush with the ground, installed in uniform patterns. The style and condition of markers can help you estimate a burial's age if cemetery records are unavailable.

Multiple visits to cemeteries may be necessary in cases where a person was buried in a cemetery no longer in active use, later relocated, or buried in a cemetery associated with a religious institution that you may not immediately identify. Taking detailed notes, photographs, and gravestone rubbings during each visit builds a personal record you can reference and share with other researchers.

Practical Takeaway: When visiting a cemetery,
