Learn About Open Source Intelligence Basics

What Open Source Intelligence Actually Is

Open Source Intelligence, commonly called OSINT, refers to information that is collected from sources available to the general public. The term "open source" does not mean the information comes from computer code repositories or free software—instead, it describes data that anyone can legally obtain. This includes news articles, social media posts, public records, satellite imagery, government publications, academic papers, and business filings. According to intelligence professionals, OSINT accounts for roughly 80 percent of actionable intelligence gathered by organizations worldwide, making it far more significant than many people realize.

The practice of gathering public information has existed for centuries. Journalists have long monitored newspapers and public documents to understand events. Researchers have reviewed academic publications to build knowledge. What has changed dramatically is the volume of available information and the tools that make collection and analysis faster. Today, someone can gather information about an organization, location, or person from thousands of sources without leaving their desk.

OSINT differs fundamentally from classified intelligence gathering. Classified intelligence involves secret documents, covert operations, and restricted information. OSINT uses only information that is legally and ethically available. This distinction matters because it means OSINT work operates within standard legal frameworks in most countries. Journalists, researchers, business analysts, security professionals, and academics all use OSINT techniques regularly as part of their normal work.

Organizations use OSINT for many legitimate purposes. Companies research competitors by reviewing their public filings, job postings, and marketing materials. Law enforcement agencies track criminal organizations by monitoring public communications. Journalists investigate stories by gathering public records and interviewing sources. Cybersecurity firms monitor the internet for threats by analyzing publicly posted information about vulnerabilities.

Practical takeaway: Understanding that OSINT relies on publicly available information helps clarify what is and is not part of this field. If you could theoretically walk into a public library or government office and request the information, it is likely OSINT material.

Common Sources and Where Information Lives

OSINT practitioners draw from a wide variety of publicly available sources. News media outlets publish information about events, organizations, and people constantly. Search engines index billions of web pages. Social media platforms host trillions of posts, photos, and videos. Government agencies maintain public records including property deeds, court filings, business licenses, and census data. Academic institutions publish research papers. Companies file financial documents with regulatory agencies. This abundance of sources creates both opportunity and challenge—there is tremendous information available, but finding relevant material requires strategy.

News archives represent one of the oldest and most reliable OSINT sources. Major newspapers, wire services, and online news sites maintain searchable archives of articles. Many libraries provide free access to newspaper databases through their websites. Historical newspapers have been digitized by organizations like the Library of Congress, making articles from decades or even centuries ago searchable. News sources employ editors and fact-checkers, though readers should still evaluate claims critically and cross-reference important information with multiple sources.

Social media platforms are significant OSINT sources because billions of people post information publicly. Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok contain enormous volumes of user-generated content. People post about their locations, their activities, their opinions, and their connections. Organizations post announcements about new products, hiring, and business changes. While much social media content is trivial, patterns and aggregated information can reveal meaningful insights. A security researcher might notice multiple job postings at a company on LinkedIn, indicating expansion or turnover. A journalist might use Twitter searches to find eyewitness accounts of events as they happen.

Government records and public databases constitute another major category. Property records show real estate ownership and transaction history. Court records contain information about legal cases, judgments, and filings. Business registries list company formations, ownership structures, and regulatory compliance. Census data provides demographic information about populations. Tax assessor records document property values. These records are maintained by government agencies and are typically available through official websites or public access terminals. The specific records available and the ease of access vary by country and jurisdiction.

Commercial and corporate sources provide additional information. Companies file financial reports with stock market regulators. Corporations publish press releases, annual reports, and investor presentations. Business directories list company information including contact details and operational data. Patent databases show what technologies companies have developed. Job posting sites reveal hiring patterns and organizational needs. Many of these sources are free to search, though some require subscriptions.

Practical takeaway: When researching a topic, identify which source categories are most relevant. A person interested in a company would check financial records and job postings. Someone researching a location would examine news archives, property records, and census data. Understanding where different types of information are stored makes research more efficient.

Tools and Resources for Gathering Information

OSINT work relies on tools that organize, search, and analyze publicly available information. These tools range from basic search engines to specialized platforms designed for information collection. Understanding what tools exist helps researchers work more effectively. Many valuable OSINT tools are free or low-cost, making OSINT research accessible to students, journalists, small organizations, and individuals.

Search engines like Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo remain foundational OSINT tools. Most people use search engines casually, but advanced search techniques make them far more powerful. Search operators allow users to narrow results by date range, file type, specific domains, or exact phrases. For example, searching "filetype:pdf site:company.com" would return only PDF files from a specific company's website. Reverse image searches, available through Google Images and other platforms, can locate where a photo appears online and show variations of the same image. These basic techniques, when used skillfully, can uncover substantial information.

Specialized OSINT platforms aggregate and organize public information. Shodan, for instance, searches for internet-connected devices and systems by scanning publicly accessible device information. Censys scans the internet for certificates and systems. These tools are used by security researchers to identify potentially vulnerable devices. Shodan has found everything from unsecured traffic cameras to industrial control systems exposed to the internet. Using these tools requires technical knowledge and should only be done lawfully and ethically.

Social media analysis tools monitor and archive posts from platforms like Twitter. Tools like Brandwatch, Tweetdeck, and specialized OSINT platforms can search across social media, track trending topics, and analyze sentiment. Journalists use these tools to monitor breaking news. Companies use them to track mentions of their brands. These tools help researchers understand what is being discussed publicly about specific topics or entities.

Geolocation tools combine satellite imagery, maps, and location data. Google Earth and Google Maps allow viewing of satellite and street-level imagery from around the world. Geolocation OSINT involves using visual clues in photos—buildings, landmarks, signs, shadows, vehicle types—to determine where a photo was taken. This technique has proven valuable in journalism and investigations. Researchers have located secret military facilities, verified news reports, and tracked supply movements using only publicly available satellite imagery and analytical skills.

Record search tools provide access to government databases and public records. Many local and state governments have searchable websites for property records, court filings, and business registrations. Genealogy sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch contain historical records. Public records aggregators attempt to consolidate information from multiple sources, though their accuracy and completeness vary. Learning how to navigate government websites and request public records is valuable OSINT skill.

Practical takeaway: Start with tools you already know how to use, like search engines, and learn their advanced features before moving to specialized platforms. Free tools and publicly available websites often provide most of the information researchers need. Specialized tools are most useful when you have specific questions that general search cannot answer.

Techniques for Researching People, Organizations, and Places

OSINT research follows recognizable patterns depending on what is being investigated. Researching a person involves gathering biographical information, professional history, and public activity. Researching an organization means understanding its structure, leadership, operations, and financial status. Researching a location involves analyzing geography, infrastructure, demographics, and recent events. Each category uses overlapping sources but with different emphasis.

Person-focused OSINT typically begins with searching the person's name across multiple sources. LinkedIn profiles reveal professional history and current employment. Public social media accounts show activity, interests, and connections. News articles mention people in various contexts. Court and property records document legal history and real estate ownership. This approach builds a profile of a person's background, connections, and activities. Journalists use these techniques to vet sources and understand interview subjects. Employers conduct similar research as background checks. Researchers studying social networks use person-focused OSINT to map connections between individuals.
