Learn About Quotation Marks in Writing

What Quotation Marks Are and Why They Matter

Quotation marks are punctuation symbols that look like two small marks above a line of text: " ". They serve one main purpose in writing: they show that someone has spoken words, or that you are using someone else's exact words. When you see quotation marks in a book, article, or email, they tell you that the words inside belong to a specific person or source. Without quotation marks, readers would not know where someone's speech begins and ends.

Quotation marks are important because they give credit to the original speaker or writer. If you want to share what someone said or wrote, putting their words in quotation marks shows that those words are not your own. This is called attribution, and it is a key part of honest writing. It also helps readers understand who is speaking at any moment in a text. In a story with multiple characters talking, quotation marks make it clear which character is speaking each line of dialogue.

The rules for quotation marks can seem confusing at first because they have many uses. In the United States, the standard quotation mark is the curved mark that looks like a small 66 and 99: " ". Some keyboards and older typewriters use straight marks instead: " ". Most modern writing, especially in books and formal documents, uses the curved marks. Understanding how and when to use quotation marks will make your writing clearer and more professional.

Quotation marks also protect your writing from accusations of plagiarism. Plagiarism happens when you present someone else's words or ideas as your own. Using quotation marks shows that you are honest about where information comes from. This is especially important in school writing, business reports, and academic papers. Learning to use quotation marks correctly is a basic but powerful skill that makes you a better writer.

Practical Takeaway: Quotation marks tell readers that the words inside are someone else's exact words, not your own. They give credit to the original speaker or writer and help prevent plagiarism.

How to Use Quotation Marks for Direct Speech

Direct speech means writing down the exact words that someone said. When you use direct speech, you must put quotation marks around those words. For example: Maria said, "I love reading books about history." The words Maria actually spoke go inside the quotation marks. This is different from indirect speech, where you report what someone said without using their exact words. In indirect speech, you would write: Maria said that she loves reading books about history. Notice that indirect speech does not use quotation marks because you are not using the exact words.

When you write dialogue in a story or report what someone said, always put the exact words in quotation marks. Here are some examples: "The weather looks like rain today," Tom observed. "Can you help me move this box?" asked Jennifer. "I will be there in five minutes," he promised. In each of these examples, the quotation marks show where the person's exact words begin and end.

One important rule is that punctuation that belongs with the quoted words goes inside the quotation marks. If the sentence ends with the quoted words, the period goes before the closing quotation mark. For example: She said, "The meeting starts at noon." The period is inside the quotation marks, not after them. The same rule applies to question marks and exclamation points. "Did you finish your homework?" asked the teacher. Notice that the question mark is inside the quotation marks because it is part of what the teacher said.

When you have a quotation that is interrupted, you need two sets of quotation marks. For example: "I think," said Robert, "that we should leave early." Notice that the first part of Robert's words is in quotation marks, then his name and "said," then the rest of his words in a second set of quotation marks. Each part of his actual speech is marked separately, but together they form one complete thought.

Long quotations that are more than three lines may be formatted as a block quote instead of using quotation marks. In academic and formal writing, block quotes are indented and set apart from the regular text. This style is used for quotations of four or more lines, depending on the style guide you are following. Block quotes do not use quotation marks around the text because the indentation shows that it is a quotation.

Practical Takeaway: Put exact words that someone speaks inside quotation marks. Place ending punctuation inside the quotation marks, and use block quotes for very long quotations.

Quotation Marks for Quoting Written Sources

Quotation marks are not just for dialogue or spoken words. They are also used when you quote from books, articles, websites, or other written sources. When you want to include an exact sentence or phrase from something you read, you put it in quotation marks and tell your reader where it came from. This practice is called citation, and it is essential in research papers, reports, and any writing where you use information from other sources.

For example, if you are writing about climate change and you want to use a fact from a scientific article, you might write: According to the National Geographic article, "Rising temperatures are causing glaciers to melt at unprecedented rates." The quotation marks show that this is an exact quote from the article, not your own words. You should also include information about where the quote came from, such as the source, author, and date. Different style guides, such as MLA, APA, and Chicago, have specific rules about how to format these citations.

When quoting from sources, you must copy the words exactly as they appear. You cannot change words or spelling to fit your writing style. However, you can leave out words if they are not important to your point. When you leave out words, you use three dots called an ellipsis (...) to show where the words were removed. For example: According to the report, "Rising temperatures ... are causing glaciers to melt." The ellipsis shows that some words were left out between "temperatures" and "are." If you leave out words at the end of a quote, you use four dots: three for the ellipsis and one for the period.

You can also add your own words inside a quotation if you need to explain something. To show that words are your own addition and not part of the original quote, you put them in square brackets. For example: According to the report, "Rising temperatures [caused by human activity] are causing glaciers to melt." The brackets show that "caused by human activity" is your addition to clarify the meaning.

Short quotations from sources go inside quotation marks in the middle of your paragraph. Long quotations, usually four or more lines, should be formatted as block quotes and do not need quotation marks. When deciding whether to quote directly or paraphrase (rewrite in your own words), remember that quotation marks are best used for particularly powerful or important phrases. If you are just sharing information, paraphrasing without quotation marks is often better. Either way, always tell your reader where the information came from.

Practical Takeaway: Use quotation marks around exact words from books, articles, and websites. Include the source of the quote, use ellipses to show missing words, and use brackets for your own additions.

Quotation Marks for Special Words and Phrases

Quotation marks have several other uses beyond marking dialogue and quotations. One common use is to highlight a word or phrase that is being discussed or defined. For example, if you are explaining a new vocabulary word, you might write: The word "photosynthesis" means the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. The quotation marks draw attention to the specific word being defined. This helps readers understand that you are talking about the word itself, not what it represents.

Quotation marks are also used for nicknames or titles that are part of a person's name or identifying information. For example: Thomas "Tommy" Rodriguez scored the winning goal. The quotation marks show that Tommy is a nickname for Thomas. However, style rules vary on this use, and many writers now omit the quotation marks for nicknames in informal writing.

Another use of quotation marks is to show that a word or phrase is being used in a special way, often ironically or sarcastically. For example: The restaurant claims to serve "authentic" Italian food, but the pasta tastes nothing like what I had in Italy. The quotation marks around "authentic" suggest that the writer disagrees with the restaurant's description. The marks indicate that the word is being used in a questionable way. This technique should be used sparingly because it can make
