Learn About Tracking USPS Money Orders
What Are USPS Money Orders and How Do They Work?
A USPS money order is a payment method sold by the United States Postal Service. It functions similarly to a check but offers more security because the amount is prepaid when you purchase it. Money orders are paper documents that allow you to send money through the mail or pay for goods and services in person without using a personal check or credit card.

When you purchase a money order at a post office, you pay the face value of the money order plus a small fee. As of 2024, USPS charges between $1.45 and $6.50 depending on the amount. You fill out the money order with the recipient's name, your name as the purchaser, and sign it. The recipient then takes the money order to their bank or post office to cash it or deposit it.
Money orders have several key features that make them useful. They can be sent through regular mail without the risk of cash being lost or stolen. They provide a paper trail showing who sent the money and who received it. They work as an alternative payment method when vendors don't accept personal checks or when you want to avoid giving out banking information. Businesses, individuals sending money to family, people paying rent or utility bills, and those avoiding electronic payments all use money orders regularly.
The USPS processes millions of money orders annually. In recent years, the Postal Service has maintained steady money order services despite growth in digital payments. Money orders remain particularly common in certain communities and for specific transactions where people prefer a traditional, tangible payment method. Understanding how money orders work is the foundation for understanding how to track them.
Practical takeaway: Money orders are prepaid documents that provide security and documentation. Knowing what they are helps you understand why tracking them matters and what information you'll need to locate one.
Understanding Money Order Serial Numbers and Identification
Every USPS money order has a unique serial number that serves as its identification. This number is printed on the money order and appears in multiple places on the document. The serial number is the key piece of information needed to track a money order through the postal system. Each number is distinct, meaning no two money orders will have the same serial number.

When you purchase a money order, you receive a receipt. This receipt shows the serial number of the money order you purchased. The receipt is a critical document for tracking purposes. Many people discard receipts without realizing they may need them later. If you lose the receipt, you can still track a money order if you remember other details like the exact amount, the date of purchase, and which post office sold it to you.
The serial number format for USPS money orders follows a specific pattern. The number typically appears on both the main money order and the receipt portion. If you're attempting to track a money order, having the serial number makes the process much more straightforward. The number helps postal workers and customer service representatives locate the specific transaction in the system.
Beyond the serial number, money orders contain other identifying information. The amount is printed on the document in multiple locations. The date of purchase is recorded. The post office location where it was sold may be indicated. Some money orders show the issuing post office's zip code. All of these details work together to create a complete record of the transaction.
Keeping receipts organized is a practical step for anyone who sends money orders regularly. You might create a simple spreadsheet or keep receipts in a folder. Note the serial number, amount, recipient name, date sent, and expected delivery date. This creates your own tracking record and makes it easier to follow up with USPS if questions arise.
Practical takeaway: Save your money order receipt immediately after purchase. Write down the serial number in a safe place. This single piece of information unlocks your ability to track the money order through its journey.
How to Track a USPS Money Order Through Official Channels
USPS provides official methods to track money orders. The primary way is through the Postal Service's online tracking system at usps.com. However, it's important to understand that USPS money order tracking differs from package tracking. Money orders are tracked differently because they are financial instruments, not physical packages being shipped.

To track a money order online, visit the USPS website and look for the money order services section. You'll need to provide specific information: the serial number of the money order, the amount, and the date it was issued. Having your receipt makes this process straightforward. The system will show you information about the money order's status.
You can also contact USPS customer service by phone. The main USPS customer service line is 1-800-275-8777. When you call, have your serial number ready. Explain that you're tracking a money order and provide the information requested. Customer service representatives can look up the money order in the system and tell you whether it has been cashed and when that occurred. They can also provide information about the location where it was cashed if that information is available.
Visiting your local post office is another option for tracking. Bring your receipt and speak with a postal clerk. They can check the system and provide you with tracking information. This method works particularly well if the money order was purchased at that specific location, though clerks can look up money orders from any post office.
The tracking information you receive will typically show whether the money order has been cashed and the date it was cashed. In some cases, you may learn the location where it was cashed. If the money order hasn't been cashed yet, the system will indicate that. The time frame for this information to appear in the system varies, but typically takes a few business days after the money order is cashed.
Practical takeaway: Use usps.com or call 1-800-275-8777 with your serial number to check money order status. Plan for several business days between sending a money order and when tracking information becomes available online.
Timeline and What to Expect When Tracking
Understanding the typical timeline for money order delivery and cashing helps you know what to expect when tracking. When you purchase a money order and place it in the mail, the delivery time depends on the mail service you choose. A money order sent via First-Class Mail typically arrives within 1-3 business days for local destinations or 3-5 business days for longer distances. If you hand it directly to the recipient, it's available immediately.

After the recipient receives the money order, they need to take it to a bank or post office to cash it. This step doesn't happen automatically. The recipient must deposit or cash it, and this action is what appears in the tracking system. Some people cash money orders within hours of receiving them, while others may wait days or even weeks. This variable timeline is important to understand because your tracking information will only update once the money order has been presented for payment.
Once a money order is cashed, the information typically appears in the USPS system within 1-2 business days. You may see a slight delay between the actual cashing date and when the information shows up in the online system. Post offices process transactions in batches, so a money order cashed on a Saturday might not appear in the system until Monday or Tuesday.
If you sent a money order and haven't seen any activity after 7-10 business days, it may not have been delivered or may not have been cashed. At this point, it's reasonable to follow up. Contact the recipient to confirm they received it. If they didn't receive it, you can begin the process of filing a claim with USPS for a lost or missing money order. This process requires your receipt and serial number.
For recurring money order senders, tracking becomes easier with experience. You'll develop a sense of normal delivery times in your area and understand the typical time frame for recipients to cash the money order. This knowledge helps you identify when something is unusual and when follow-up is actually needed.
Practical takeaway: Expect tracking information to appear 4-7 business days after you mail a money order. Wait until this time frame has passed before contacting USPS about a missing money order. Contact the recipient first to confirm delivery.
Troubleshooting: What to Do When a Money Order Doesn't Show as Cashed
When you track a money order and it doesn't show as cashed after a reasonable time period, several possibilities could explain the situation. The most common reason is that the recipient simply hasn't cashed it yet. They may be waiting to deposit it, may have misplaced
