Learn About Volunteering With Children as a Senior

Understanding Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors Working With Children

Volunteering with children as a senior offers meaningful ways to stay active, connected, and purposeful in your community. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, seniors aged 65 and older represent about 9% of all volunteers in the United States, with many choosing to work with young people in schools, youth centers, and community organizations.

Volunteer roles with children vary widely and can match different skill levels, physical abilities, and interests. Some seniors tutor students in reading or math, while others mentor youth through mentoring programs, help with after-school activities, or support children in foster care. The work doesn't always require physical demands—many positions involve sitting while working one-on-one with a child or small group, making them accessible for seniors with mobility concerns or health limitations.

Organizations that work with children actively seek seniors as volunteers. They value the patience, life experience, and stability that older adults bring. Research from the AARP shows that intergenerational volunteer programs—where older adults work with children—produce positive outcomes for both age groups, including improved academic performance for children and greater life satisfaction for seniors.

Understanding what volunteering with children involves helps you decide if it's right for you. Consider your interests, available time, physical capabilities, and what you hope to gain from the experience. Some seniors want to share specific skills like music or carpentry, while others simply want regular contact with young people and the opportunity to make a difference.

Practical Takeaway: Start by reflecting on what subjects or activities you enjoy most and how many hours per week you can commit. This self-assessment will help you identify volunteer roles that genuinely match your situation.

Types of Volunteer Roles Available With Children

The range of volunteer positions working with children is extensive. In schools, seniors serve as reading tutors, math coaches, and homework helpers. These roles typically occur in classrooms or libraries and focus on supporting students who need extra attention. Elementary schools often need tutors more than middle or high schools, though opportunities exist at all levels.

Mentoring programs pair individual seniors with children who would benefit from a stable adult relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters and similar organizations run formal mentoring programs where a volunteer commits to spending time with a child regularly—often several hours per month over a set period. Mentors might go on outings, help with schoolwork, or simply provide consistent presence and guidance.

After-school and summer programs employ volunteer support staff. You might help supervise activities, lead a specific program (like a cooking class or art project), or provide general support to paid staff. Recreation centers, libraries, community centers, and faith-based organizations all run such programs.

Other volunteer opportunities include serving as a foster grandparent, supporting children in hospitals or hospice care, helping at youth sports events or performances, volunteering at daycare or preschool centers, and participating in special event support at schools or children's organizations. Some seniors volunteer virtually—tutoring online, participating in video mentoring sessions, or supporting organizations through remote administrative work.

The Foster Grandparent Program, funded through the Corporation for National Service, places seniors aged 55 and older in volunteer positions with children facing challenges. Volunteers typically work 15-40 hours per week and receive a small stipend, transportation reimbursement, and meals. Over 240,000 seniors have participated in this program.

Practical Takeaway: List three types of roles from this section that appeal to you most. Then contact one or two organizations that offer those roles in your area to learn more specifics about their volunteer positions.

Requirements, Training, and Background Checks

Organizations working with children take safety seriously. Most will require background checks before you begin volunteering. This typically involves checking criminal records, sex offender registries, and sometimes child abuse registries. The process and specific requirements vary by organization and by state law. Background checks usually take one to four weeks and are generally conducted at no cost to the volunteer.

Many organizations require reference checks. You'll typically provide contact information for two or three people who can speak to your character and reliability. These are often former employers, colleagues, teachers, or community members—though the organization will usually specify what type of reference they prefer.

Training requirements depend on the role. Tutoring volunteers might receive training on teaching techniques and the specific curriculum they'll support. Mentors usually attend orientation sessions covering child development, communication skills, and program expectations. Some roles require minimal training beyond orientation, while others—like those in therapeutic settings or specialized programs—involve more extensive preparation.

Physical or health requirements vary by position. Some roles require no specific health status, while others may ask about your ability to perform certain tasks (like lifting, standing for extended periods, or maintaining focus during high-energy activities). If you have health concerns, discuss them with the organization early; they may accommodate you or suggest alternative positions better suited to your situation.

Many organizations require a time commitment. A school tutoring program might ask for a minimum of two hours per week for an academic year. A mentoring relationship might require four hours per month for 12 months. Understanding these expectations before starting helps ensure you can follow through on your commitment—consistency matters greatly to the children you'd be supporting.

Practical Takeaway: Ask each organization about their specific background check process, training requirements, and time commitments before you move forward. Write down these requirements so you know what to expect.

Finding Volunteer Positions in Your Community

Several resources help you locate volunteer opportunities with children near your home. VolunteerMatch.org is a national database where you can search by location, cause, and type of work. The site has filters for seniors and for positions working with children, making it easier to narrow down options. Ideation Civic is another national volunteer matching platform with similar features.

Local volunteer centers often maintain lists of organizations seeking volunteers. Many communities have a Volunteer Center or similar organization that serves as a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities. Search online for "[your city] volunteer center" or "[your county] volunteer opportunities." Staff at these centers can discuss your interests and recommend positions that match your skills and availability.

Contact schools directly. Call the principal's office or visit the school's website and ask about volunteer opportunities. Elementary schools typically have more structured volunteer programs than secondary schools. Teachers sometimes welcome individual tutors, and administrative staff coordinate volunteers for various school events and programs.

Faith-based organizations—churches, temples, mosques, synagogues, and faith-based nonprofits—frequently run youth programs and welcome senior volunteers. Contact organizations in your faith tradition or simply call local faith communities and ask about children's programs.

For positions with specific organizations, visit their websites directly. Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Foster Grandparent Program, local children's museums, libraries, hospitals with pediatric units, and youth sports organizations all recruit volunteers. Their websites typically have volunteer sections describing current opportunities and how to express interest.

Personal connections matter too. Tell friends, family, and neighbors that you're interested in volunteering with children. They may know of opportunities or organizations that need volunteers. Community bulletin boards at libraries, community centers, coffee shops, and places of worship sometimes list volunteer positions.

Practical Takeaway: Spend an hour this week visiting at least two volunteer matching websites or contacting your local volunteer center. Make a list of three to five specific organizations that interest you and save their contact information.

Benefits and Challenges of Volunteer Work With Children

Research documents significant benefits for seniors who volunteer with children. Older adults often report greater sense of purpose, improved mood, and reduced loneliness. A study published in the journal Gerontology found that seniors engaged in meaningful volunteer work showed lower rates of depression and higher life satisfaction. The intergenerational nature of work with children creates particular value—seniors describe feeling needed and valued when children respond to their teaching or mentoring.

Physical health may improve as well. Volunteering keeps you active and engaged with your community. For seniors who volunteer regularly, some studies suggest reduced blood pressure, lower rates of certain chronic diseases, and better cognitive function. The social connection and mental engagement contribute to overall wellness.

For children, benefits include improved academic performance when working with tutors, increased sense of belonging when mentored, and exposure to adult role models. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds particularly benefit from consistent, positive adult relationships.

Challenges exist as well. Volunteer work with children can be emotionally demanding. You may become attached to
