Learn How Cash Advance Credit Cards Work

What Is a Cash Advance on a Credit Card?

A cash advance on a credit card is a way to borrow money directly from your credit card issuer in the form of cash. Instead of using your card to make purchases at stores or online, you withdraw actual money—either from an ATM, a bank teller, or through a convenience check. This cash then appears as a balance on your credit card that you owe back to the issuer.

The key difference between a cash advance and a regular purchase is how your credit card company treats the transaction. When you buy something with your card, that purchase goes into a standard account. A cash advance, however, typically goes into a separate account with its own terms and conditions. This distinction matters because the fees and interest rates for cash advances are usually much higher than for regular purchases.

For example, if your credit card offers 0% APR on purchases for 12 months, that promotional rate does not apply to cash advances. Cash advances start accruing interest immediately—there is no grace period like there often is for purchases. Someone who withdraws $500 in cash might pay interest on that amount from day one, even if they pay it back within days.

Cash advances come in several forms. ATM withdrawals let you pull money from any compatible machine using your card and PIN. Bank teller cash advances allow you to visit a bank branch and request cash. Some card issuers send convenience checks in the mail that you can write like regular checks. Balance transfer checks work similarly and can move debt between accounts. Each method has its own set of restrictions and terms outlined in your cardholder agreement.

Practical Takeaway: Before using a cash advance, understand that you are borrowing money at a cost, not accessing your own funds. Review your card's terms to learn the exact fees and interest rates that apply to cash advances versus regular purchases.

Fees and Costs Associated with Cash Advances

Cash advances carry multiple layers of costs that add up quickly. The most immediate cost is the cash advance fee, which is a one-time charge assessed when you withdraw the money. According to recent data, the average cash advance fee ranges from 3% to 5% of the amount withdrawn, though some cards charge a flat dollar amount instead. If you withdraw $300 and the fee is 4%, you owe $12 just for accessing the cash. If the fee is a flat $10, you still owe that regardless of whether you withdrew $50 or $500.

Beyond the initial fee, interest charges begin accumulating immediately. Cash advances have separate interest rates from purchase APRs, and they are typically much higher. The average APR for a cash advance sits between 20% and 25%, compared to an average purchase APR of around 16% to 17%. This higher rate reflects the risk lenders take when issuing unsecured cash rather than purchases tied to goods or services.

The math demonstrates how costs spiral quickly. Suppose you withdraw $500 in cash with a 4% fee and a 24% APR. You immediately owe $20 in fees, bringing your debt to $520. If you pay back $100 after one month without making any other charges, interest on the remaining $420 balance at 24% APR costs approximately $8.40 for that month. Over six months, if you only pay $100 monthly, total interest charges could exceed $60 before you even pay down the principal significantly.

Some credit cards charge no cash advance fees for balance transfers or convenience checks during promotional periods, but these offers are limited and temporary. When evaluating a card's cash advance terms, review your card's pricing information document, which lists all fees and rates. Compare multiple cards if you think you might need cash advances, as the differences between a 2% fee and a 5% fee become substantial with larger amounts.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate the total cost before taking a cash advance. Add the one-time fee to estimate how much interest you will pay based on how long you expect to carry the balance. This calculation helps determine whether a cash advance is worth the cost compared to other borrowing options.

How Cash Advances Affect Your Credit and Account

Taking a cash advance impacts your credit in several ways, some immediate and others developing over time. The cash advance itself does not typically appear as a separate inquiry or hard pull on your credit report, but the resulting balance does affect your credit utilization ratio—the percentage of your available credit you are using. If your credit card has a $5,000 limit and you take a $2,000 cash advance, your utilization jumps to 40%. Credit scoring models consider utilization ratios of 30% or higher to be higher-risk behavior, which can lower your credit score.

The impact on utilization is one reason cash advances can harm your credit score more than regular purchases. Many people think carrying a balance is the same regardless of how it was created, but credit scoring systems sometimes treat cash advances differently. VantageScore and FICO models may weight cash advance balances more heavily because they indicate cash flow problems or financial stress. If you typically keep your utilization low and then take a large cash advance, the sudden spike signals risk to lenders.

Payment history matters more than any other factor in credit scoring—it accounts for about 35% of your FICO score. When you take a cash advance, you create a new debt obligation. If you pay it back on time, this helps your payment history. However, if you miss a payment or make late payments, the negative mark appears on your credit report and stays for seven years. Late payments on cash advances can be particularly damaging because they signal you struggled to manage borrowed cash—a more serious red flag than a late purchase payment.

Cash advances also affect your credit card issuer's view of you as a customer. Issuers track whether you use cash advances regularly. Frequent use raises concerns about your financial stability and may prompt issuers to lower your credit limit or close your account entirely. Some issuers reduce limits or increase interest rates for customers who frequently use cash advances, even if they pay on time. This occurs because cash advance usage correlates with higher default rates in lending industry data.

Practical Takeaway: Monitor how cash advances affect your available credit and utilization ratio. Pay back any cash advance as quickly as possible to minimize interest charges and credit score damage, and treat cash advances as emergency-only tools rather than regular cash sources.

When Cash Advances Make Sense and When They Do Not

Cash advances have legitimate uses in specific situations, though these scenarios are narrower than many people think. An unexpected emergency that requires immediate cash—such as a medical situation requiring a deposit, an urgent car repair, or a necessary travel expense—may justify a cash advance if no other options exist. In these cases, the convenience and speed of accessing cash quickly might outweigh the fees and higher interest rates.

Another situation where cash advances might be considered is when the cash advance APR is significantly lower than alternative borrowing options available to you. For instance, if you have poor credit and the only other option is a payday lender charging 400% APR, a credit card cash advance at 25% APR would be the better choice. However, this situation reflects desperation rather than a sound financial strategy—the real solution is building credit or finding other resources.

Conversely, cash advances rarely make sense for routine cash needs. If you regularly need cash for everyday expenses like groceries or gas, a cash advance is an expensive way to access it. A debit card tied to your bank account costs nothing and serves the same purpose. Similarly, if you are considering a cash advance to pay other debts or credit cards, this typically creates a cycle of borrowing to pay borrowing. Unless the cash advance rate is significantly lower than what you owe elsewhere, you are just shuffling expensive debt around.

Cash advances are not a solution for overspending or budget shortfalls. If your monthly expenses exceed your income, a cash advance provides temporary relief but worsens the underlying problem. The high interest rates and fees make carrying a cash advance balance expensive, and most people who take cash advances end up carrying the balance for months, paying hundreds in interest. Financial counseling, budgeting help, or exploring income options address the real issue more effectively.

Some people consider cash advances to take advantage of promotional rates on other borrowing. For example, if you can transfer a high-rate credit card balance to a new card with 0% APR for 12 months, that is a legitimate strategy. However, this is a balance transfer, not a cash advance, and the terms are different. Confusing the two leads to
