Learn How to Change Your Samsung Phone Ringtone
Understanding Samsung Ringtone Basics
A ringtone is the sound your Samsung phone makes when someone calls you. Unlike notification sounds for text messages or emails, ringtones play specifically for incoming calls. Samsung phones come with several built-in ringtones pre-loaded on the device, ranging from traditional bell sounds to modern musical tones. Understanding how ringtones work on your Samsung device is the foundation for customizing your phone to match your preferences.

Samsung phones store ringtones in a specific folder on the device's internal storage. When you change your ringtone, you're essentially telling your phone's system to use a different audio file from this collection when an incoming call arrives. Different Samsung models may have slightly different menu names and locations for ringtone settings, but the basic process remains similar across most devices manufactured in recent years.
Your Samsung phone may use one of two operating systems: Android (the most common option for Samsung devices) or, in older models, a Samsung-specific interface. Regardless of which version you have, ringtones function the same way. The phone stores your selected ringtone preference in its settings, and when a call comes in, the device retrieves and plays that audio file through your phone's speaker.
It's worth noting that ringtones differ from ring volumes. The ringtone is the actual sound or melody that plays, while the volume controls how loud that sound becomes. You can have the same ringtone playing at different volumes depending on your settings. Additionally, some Samsung phones allow you to set different ringtones for different contacts, meaning your mom's call might play a different sound than your boss's call.
Practical takeaway: Before attempting to change your ringtone, locate your phone's Settings app and familiarize yourself with its main menu structure. On most Samsung devices, this is where all audio and notification settings are managed.
Accessing Ringtone Settings on Your Samsung Device
Finding the ringtone settings on your Samsung phone is the first step in making any changes. The exact path varies slightly depending on your phone's model and Android version, but the general process is consistent. Start by opening your phone's Settings app, which you'll typically find on your home screen or in your app drawer. The Settings app usually has a gear or wrench icon.

Once you've opened Settings, look for a section labeled "Sound" or "Sound and Vibration." On some Samsung models, this might be called "Audio" or "Notifications." The naming can vary, but it will always be in a location related to audio settings. Tap on this section to expand the menu options. This is where your phone keeps all settings related to sounds, including ringtones, notification sounds, and volume levels.
Within the Sound or Sound and Vibration menu, you'll see several options. Look for one that says "Ringtone," "Phone Ringtone," or simply "Incoming Calls." This is the setting you need to modify. Some Samsung devices organize this differently and place the ringtone option under a subsection labeled "Call Settings" or "Incoming Call Sound." If you can't find it in the Sound section, check the Phone app settings—open your Phone app and look for a settings or menu option within that application.
For users with Samsung devices running older versions of Android, the path might differ. On these phones, you might need to go to Settings, then find "Applications" or "Apps," locate the Phone app, and access its settings from there. Alternatively, some older Samsung models have a dedicated "Call Settings" option in the main Settings menu. The principle remains the same: you're looking for any menu option that specifically relates to incoming call sounds.
Practical takeaway: Write down the exact path to your ringtone settings once you find it. This makes it much faster to adjust your ringtone in the future without having to search through menus again.
Choosing from Built-In Samsung Ringtones
Samsung phones include a collection of built-in ringtones that you can choose from without needing to add any external files. These pre-installed ringtones represent various styles and preferences, ranging from classic telephone bell sounds to contemporary music-inspired tones. The number of built-in options typically ranges from fifteen to fifty, depending on your specific Samsung model and Android version.

When you tap on the "Ringtone" option in your settings, your phone displays a list of available ringtones. Each one has a name like "Whistle," "Digital," "Mechanical," "Bubbles," or "Popcorn." As you browse through the list, you can tap on any ringtone name to hear a preview of how it sounds. This preview plays through your phone's speaker at a moderate volume, allowing you to test each option before making your selection. Take time to listen to several options to find one that feels right for you.
Samsung often organizes its built-in ringtones by category or tone type. You might see sections for "Classic" ringtones (traditional bell sounds), "Contemporary" ringtones (more modern musical tones), "Nature" sounds (birds, water, etc.), or "Rhythmic" tones (beats and percussion). Browsing through these categories helps you understand what types of sounds are available. Some ringtones are subtle and quiet, making them suitable for professional environments, while others are more attention-grabbing and harder to miss.
Once you've found a ringtone you like, tap it to select it. Your phone will either highlight it or show a checkmark next to the selected ringtone. Some Samsung phones automatically apply your choice immediately, while others require you to tap a "Done," "OK," or "Confirm" button at the bottom of the screen. After this, your new ringtone is active and will play when you receive incoming calls.
Practical takeaway: Test your new ringtone by having a friend call you or using your phone's test function (some phones have a "Test" button in ringtone settings). Confirm that the volume level suits your environment and that you can clearly hear the phone when it's in your pocket or bag.
Adding Custom Ringtones from Your Device
Beyond the built-in options, you can set custom ringtones from audio files already stored on your Samsung phone. Many people have music files, downloaded sounds, or recordings on their device that they'd like to use as ringtones. Samsung allows you to designate almost any audio file as your ringtone, provided it meets certain requirements.

Custom ringtones work best with audio files in common formats such as MP3, OGG, WAV, or FLAC. Most audio files you download from the internet or purchase through music services will be in one of these formats. The file should be relatively short—typically between thirty seconds and a few minutes. A shorter file works better as a ringtone because your caller doesn't need to wait through a long introduction before you answer.
To use a custom ringtone, first ensure the audio file is stored in an accessible location on your phone. The best place to store ringtones is in a folder called "Ringtones" on your internal storage or SD card. You can create this folder using your phone's file manager app. To do this, open your file manager, navigate to the internal storage or SD card, and create a new folder (usually by long-pressing in an empty area and selecting "Create Folder" or "New Folder"). Name this folder "Ringtones."
Next, move or copy your desired audio file into this Ringtones folder. You can do this by opening your file manager, finding the audio file in its current location, and either moving or copying it. Then navigate to your ringtone settings as described in the previous section. When you tap on "Ringtone," your phone should display both the built-in options and any audio files in your Ringtones folder. Select the custom file you want to use as your new ringtone.
Practical takeaway: Consider creating a dedicated Ringtones folder on your phone and organizing your custom audio files there. This keeps your files organized and makes them easier to find when you want to change your ringtone in the future.
Setting Different Ringtones for Specific Contacts
Many Samsung users want different ringtones for different people. For example, you might want a professional tone for work calls, a fun tone for friends, and a louder tone for family members. Samsung phones allow you to assign unique ringtones to individual contacts, so you instantly know who's calling
