Learn How to Change Your Water Filter

Understanding Your Water Filter System

Water filters are devices designed to remove contaminants from tap water, improving its taste, smell, and overall quality. Different types of filters work in different ways, and understanding your specific system is the first step in maintaining it properly. Most residential water filters fall into several categories: pitcher filters, faucet-mounted filters, under-sink filters, and whole-house systems. Each type serves a different purpose and requires different maintenance schedules.

Pitcher filters, like those made by Brita or PUR, are among the most common residential filters. These work by passing water through a replaceable cartridge filled with activated carbon and ion-exchange resin. According to the Water Quality Association, activated carbon can reduce chlorine, taste, and odor issues in water. The filter cartridge typically treats between 40 to 100 gallons of water, depending on the brand and your water quality, before needing replacement.

Faucet-mounted filters attach directly to your kitchen or bathroom sink and filter water as it flows through. Under-sink filters are installed beneath the sink and connect to the water line, filtering water before it reaches the faucet. Whole-house systems filter all water entering your home. The EPA notes that while municipal water is regularly tested and must meet safety standards, many people choose filters for taste and odor preferences or to address specific local water concerns.

Before changing any filter, locate your specific filter type and model number. This information is usually found on the filter housing itself or in your product manual. Check your filter's documentation to determine the recommended replacement schedule—most pitcher filters need changing every 2-3 months, while under-sink filters may last 6-12 months depending on usage and water quality.

Practical Takeaway: Identify your filter type and model number, then check the product manual or manufacturer's website for the specific replacement schedule and compatible replacement cartridges for your system.

Recognizing When Your Filter Needs Replacement

Your water filter will show several signs indicating it needs replacement. The most obvious sign is a noticeable change in water taste or smell. If your filtered water begins tasting like chlorine again or develops an unpleasant odor, the filter media has become saturated with contaminants and can no longer effectively remove them. Many filters also slow down over time as material accumulates in the filter media, so reduced water flow is another key indicator.

Most modern water filters include a replacement indicator light or timer. Pitcher filters often have electronic indicators that track usage, or mechanical indicators that change color when replacement is needed. For example, Brita pitcher filters typically show a yellow or red light when the cartridge needs changing. However, these indicators are based on average usage patterns, so your actual replacement schedule may differ based on how much water you filter daily and your local water quality.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that households test their water quality periodically. Hard water areas—regions with high mineral content—may clog filters faster than softer water areas. You can purchase a basic water hardness test kit at most hardware stores for $10-20. These kits help you understand whether your water quality may require more frequent filter changes than the standard recommendation.

Many people use a calendar system to track filter changes. Mark your calendar when you install a new filter, then note the expected replacement date. Some filter manufacturers sell replacement packs that include multiple cartridges, making it convenient to have extras on hand. Keeping a supply of replacement filters prevents situations where you're without a functioning filter while waiting for a new one to arrive.

Document any changes you notice in water appearance, taste, or smell. Clear documentation helps you establish your household's actual filter replacement cycle, which may be different from the manufacturer's standard recommendation. This information becomes valuable for planning future filter purchases and understanding your water quality patterns.

Practical Takeaway: Monitor your filter's indicator light or color change, track water taste and flow rate, and mark your calendar with replacement dates to stay ahead of filter maintenance needs.

Gathering Materials and Preparing Your Space

Before you begin changing your water filter, gather all necessary materials. You'll need a replacement filter cartridge compatible with your specific filter model, clean towels or cloth, and possibly a wrench or filter wrench tool (depending on your filter type). Having everything assembled prevents delays and minimizes water spillage during the replacement process.

For pitcher filters, you simply need the replacement cartridge and a clean towel. Most pitcher cartridges cost between $5-15 per unit. You may want to have a small cup or bowl nearby to catch any water that drips when removing the old cartridge. For under-sink filters, you'll likely need a filter wrench—a specialized tool that helps you unscrew the filter housing without damaging it. Filter wrenches typically cost $5-20 and are reusable for many years.

Turn off the water supply before removing an under-sink or faucet-mounted filter. Most systems have a shut-off valve located under the sink or near the filter housing. If you cannot locate a shut-off valve, you may need to turn off the main water supply to your home. Opening a nearby faucet after shutting off the water helps relieve pressure in the system. For pitcher and faucet-mounted filters, you don't need to shut off your main water supply, but you should work over a sink to manage any drips.

Prepare a clean, dry workspace. For pitcher filters, work at your sink. For under-sink filters, clear the cabinet space beneath your sink, remove any items stored there, and lay down towels or newspaper to catch any residual water. Have your replacement filter, wrench, and towels within arm's reach. This preparation reduces stress and makes the actual replacement process faster and cleaner.

Check your replacement filter packaging before opening it. Verify the model number matches your filter system exactly. Many similar-looking cartridges work with different filter models, and installing the wrong cartridge wastes money and may not filter your water properly. Store your replacement filter in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight until installation.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your replacement cartridge, filter wrench (if needed), clean towels, and the model number of your filter system, then prepare your workspace and shut off water if required for your filter type.

Step-by-Step Replacement for Pitcher Filters

Pitcher filter replacement is the simplest type of filter change. Most pitcher filters use a cartridge that twists or slides into the filter housing. Start by emptying the pitcher of any remaining filtered water. Discard this water—don't drink it, as the old cartridge is no longer functioning effectively. Fill a glass of water from your tap to rinse the empty pitcher, then discard this water as well. This cleaning step removes any loose particles or sediment.

Separate the filter cartridge from the pitcher. Most models allow you to either twist the cartridge counterclockwise or press release tabs to remove it. The old cartridge will likely contain brown or discolored material—this is trapped sediment and contaminants. Throw away the old cartridge in your regular trash. Do not compost it or attempt to clean and reuse it. Some manufacturers offer recycling programs; check your filter's website for details.

Take your new cartridge out of its packaging. Before installing, soak the new cartridge in cold water for 15-30 minutes. This activation step allows the filter media to fully expand and become more effective. Fill a clean bowl with cold tap water and submerge the cartridge completely. After soaking, carefully insert the new cartridge into the pitcher's filter housing. Align it properly and twist it clockwise until snug, or secure it according to your specific pitcher's design. Do not over-tighten, as this can damage the housing.

Fill the pitcher with tap water and run it through the filter once before using filtered water. Discard this first batch of filtered water. Discard the second pitcher of filtered water as well. This rinses the new filter media and ensures the water you drink is clean. After the second rinse, your pitcher is ready to use normally.

Store your empty pitcher in a location where you'll remember to fill it regularly. Most people refill their pitcher when it empties, keeping filtered water continuously available. Replace this cartridge every 2-3 months or when you notice changes in taste, smell, or flow rate. If you filter water frequently or notice faster changes, replace your cartridge every 6-8 weeks.
