Learn How to Flush Your Tankless Water Heater

Understanding Your Tankless Water Heater and Why Flushing Matters

A tankless water heater, also called an on-demand water heater, heats water only when you turn on a tap. Unlike traditional tank water heaters that store hot water continuously, tankless models heat water as it passes through a heat exchanger. This design makes them more energy-efficient—the U.S. Department of Energy reports they can be 24% to 34% more efficient than storage tank models, depending on your hot water usage patterns.

Inside your tankless water heater, mineral deposits gradually build up on the heat exchanger. This process, called scaling, happens when hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium accumulate over time. In regions with hard water, scaling can occur within 6 to 12 months. In softer water areas, it may take several years. When mineral deposits build up, they act as an insulator, making your water heater work harder to heat water. This reduces efficiency and increases energy costs.

Flushing your tankless water heater means running a descaling solution through the system to remove these mineral deposits. Most manufacturers recommend flushing once yearly, though some suggest every 6 months if you have hard water. The process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and costs between $150 to $300 if you hire a professional, or $20 to $50 if you do it yourself with basic materials.

Recognizing when your unit needs flushing helps prevent problems. Signs include reduced hot water flow, inconsistent water temperature, or unusual noises like popping or banging sounds coming from the unit. Some units have electronic displays that show error codes indicating mineral buildup.

Practical Takeaway: Check your water heater's manual for the manufacturer's specific flushing recommendations. Different brands have different intervals and procedures. Finding this information before you need to flush ensures you follow the correct process for your model.

Gathering Your Tools and Materials for a Successful Flush

Before starting the flushing process, collect all necessary materials. You'll need white vinegar or a commercial descaling solution designed for tankless water heaters. White vinegar is inexpensive—typically costing $2 to $5 per gallon—and works well for mild to moderate mineral buildup. For heavy scaling, commercial solutions like Rheem RHS or Stiebel Eltron may be more effective, costing $15 to $40 per container. Research which solution works best for your specific unit by checking the manual or contacting the manufacturer.

You'll also need basic equipment that many homeowners already have. A submersible pump (around $40 to $80 for a quality model) circulates the descaling solution through the system. You need two buckets large enough to hold several gallons of liquid—five-gallon buckets work well. Stainless steel or plastic tubing that fits your water heater's service ports is essential; measure your port sizes before purchasing. Most tankless units have ½-inch ports, but verify this with your manual. You'll need about 6 to 10 feet of tubing.

Additional supplies include hose clamps to secure the tubing connections, towels to catch small spills, and an adjustable wrench or pliers to remove flush valve caps. A thermometer can help you monitor water temperature during the process. Wear work gloves and safety glasses—vinegar can irritate skin and eyes, and some commercial solutions are stronger.

Create a workspace where you can spread out materials. The area near your water heater should have enough room to position buckets and lay out tubing. Ensure adequate ventilation if using commercial descaling solutions, as fumes can accumulate in enclosed spaces.

Practical Takeaway: Order or purchase all materials before starting. Running out of vinegar or discovering your tubing doesn't fit mid-process creates frustration and delays. Many people prepare materials a day ahead to ensure everything is ready.

Preparing Your Tankless Water Heater for the Flushing Process

Proper preparation prevents problems and makes the actual flushing smoother. Start by turning off electrical power to your water heater. Most units have a power switch on the side or back. If you cannot locate it, turn off the breaker at your electrical panel. Wait several minutes before proceeding to ensure the unit has cooled. This protects both you and the equipment.

Next, shut off both the cold water inlet and hot water outlet valves on your water heater. These isolation valves are typically located on the pipes connected to the unit. Turn them clockwise until they stop—they should feel snug but not forced. If your system doesn't have isolation valves, consider having them installed by a professional. They're inexpensive ($30 to $60 each) and make future maintenance much easier.

If your water heater has a bypass valve, check that it's functioning. The bypass valve allows you to service your unit without draining the home's lines. Consult your manual for the bypass valve location. Some units have a manual valve you must switch to bypass mode; others do this automatically.

Look for the flush valve ports on your water heater. These are typically small ports labeled "service" or "flush." They're often brass or plastic outlets about the size of a pencil eraser. Many units have two ports—one for inlet and one for outlet. Some have a dedicated flush port. Your manual will show exactly where these are located. Take a photo of your unit's service ports for reference.

Allow the water heater to cool completely. Tankless units cool quickly once power is cut, usually within 10 to 15 minutes. Never start flushing a hot unit—hot water can cause burns, and temperature changes can damage equipment.

Practical Takeaway: Write down the time you turn off power and wait at least 15 minutes before touching service ports. This cooling period is non-negotiable for safety and equipment protection.

Executing the Flushing Process Step by Step

Begin by removing the small caps or plugs from the flush valve ports. Set these aside in a safe place—they're small and easy to lose. Some water may drip out, so have towels ready. Attach stainless steel or plastic tubing to the ports using hose clamps. The inlet port (usually marked cold water inlet or "in") connects to the pump's inlet. The outlet port (hot water outlet or "out") runs into your bucket.

Fill one bucket with your descaling solution. Mix white vinegar with water at a 1:1 ratio if using vinegar, or follow the commercial solution manufacturer's instructions—they vary by product. Place your submersible pump in the bucket with the solution. Attach the pump's outlet tubing to the water heater's inlet port. Position the outlet tubing so solution drains back into your second bucket. This closed-loop system circulates the solution through your heat exchanger.

Turn on the pump and let the solution circulate. You should see fluid flowing out of the outlet port into your collection bucket. Let this run for 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the level of mineral buildup. For mild buildup, 20 minutes may be adequate. For heavy scaling, 45 minutes or longer produces better results. Some professionals recommend circulating for a full hour on first-time flushes.

As the solution circulates, mineral deposits dissolve. You may notice the outlet fluid becoming cloudy or discolored—this is normal and indicates the solution is working. If using white vinegar, you might smell vinegar odor; this is harmless. Do not leave the pump running unattended. Stay nearby to ensure steady flow and monitor the solution level in the bucket.

After circulation, turn off the pump and allow the system to sit for 15 to 30 minutes. This gives remaining deposits time to dissolve. Then resume circulation for another 10 to 20 minutes. Some technicians recommend this soak-circulation-soak cycle for heavily scaled units.

Once flushing is complete, carefully disconnect the tubing from both ports. Have towels ready to catch residual solution. Remove the pump from the bucket. This completes the descaling phase of flushing.

Practical Takeaway: Monitor the outlet fluid color during the entire flushing cycle. Clear or light-colored fluid near the end indicates most deposits have dissolved. If fluid
