Learn How To Make Links Clickable Online
Understanding What Clickable Links Are and Why They Matter
A clickable link is text or an image on a webpage that you can click to navigate to another page, document, or resource. When you hover your mouse over a clickable link, the cursor typically changes to a hand pointer, signaling that the element is interactive. Clickable links form the backbone of how the internet works—they connect webpages to each other and allow users to move between different content seamlessly.

According to data from the Pew Research Center, approximately 93% of American adults use the internet, and most of their online interactions involve clicking links. Whether you're reading a news article, shopping online, or researching information, clickable links are the primary method of navigation. For people creating content online—whether through blogs, websites, social media, or email newsletters—understanding how to create functional, effective links is essential.
Clickable links serve multiple purposes. They can direct readers to related content, provide sources for information, enable downloads, connect to social media profiles, or guide users to contact pages. In professional settings, clickable links are critical for user experience and search engine optimization (SEO). Websites with well-structured, relevant links tend to rank higher in search results and keep visitors engaged longer.
The importance of clickable links extends beyond navigation. They establish connections between content and help organize information in a logical way. For businesses and content creators, clickable links are tools for directing traffic, building credibility by citing sources, and guiding users toward specific actions or information. A website without functional clickable links feels broken and frustrating to users.
Practical Takeaway: Before creating links, understand your purpose. Are you directing readers to additional information, providing sources, enabling transactions, or connecting to social platforms? Knowing your goal helps you create links that truly benefit your audience.
HTML Basics: The Foundation of Creating Clickable Links
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the code language used to create webpages. To make text or images clickable, you use the anchor tag, represented as <a>. The basic structure of a clickable link in HTML looks like this: <a href="URL">Link Text</a>. The "href" attribute stands for "hypertext reference" and contains the destination where users will be taken when they click the link.

Creating a simple text link requires only three components. First, you open the anchor tag with <a>. Second, you add the href attribute with your destination URL inside quotation marks. Third, you place your link text between the opening and closing tags. For example, to create a link to Google, you would write: <a href="https://www.google.com">Click here to visit Google</a>. When this code appears on a webpage, users see blue, underlined text that says "Click here to visit Google," and clicking it takes them to Google's homepage.
The URL in the href attribute can be absolute or relative. An absolute URL is a complete web address, like https://www.example.com/page. A relative URL is a shorter path used when linking to pages within the same website, like /page or ../folder/page. Relative URLs are useful for internal navigation and make it easier to move your website files without breaking all your links.
HTML also supports several attributes that enhance links. The "title" attribute adds a tooltip that appears when users hover over a link. For example: <a href="https://www.example.com" title="Learn more about this topic">Click here</a> displays the tooltip text when someone hovers their mouse over the link. The "target" attribute can open links in new browser tabs or windows. Using target="_blank" opens the link in a new tab, which is helpful when directing users to external websites without making them leave your page.
Practical Takeaway: Start with the basic HTML structure: <a href="your-url-here">your link text</a>. Practice writing a few simple links before moving to more complex options. Understanding this foundation makes everything else easier.
Creating Links in Popular Content Platforms and Tools
Most people who create online content don't write HTML code directly. Instead, they use platforms and tools with built-in link functionality. WordPress, the platform that powers approximately 43% of all websites, includes a simple link tool in its editor. To create a link in WordPress, you highlight the text you want to make clickable, click the link icon (usually represented by a chain symbol), and paste your destination URL. WordPress handles the HTML code automatically behind the scenes.

Google Docs, a free cloud-based document editor used by millions, also makes link creation simple. Users can highlight text, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+K (or Cmd+K on Mac), paste the URL, and the text becomes clickable. Microsoft Word follows a similar process: right-click on selected text, choose "Link," and enter your destination. These tools are designed for people without coding knowledge, making them accessible to everyone.
Email marketing platforms like Mailchimp, Constant Contact, and ConvertKit all include drag-and-drop or text editors with built-in link buttons. Social media platforms handle links differently—Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn automatically detect URLs pasted into posts and turn them into clickable links. LinkedIn's platform also allows you to create links within the text of posts by using their link formatting tool.
Content management systems (CMS) like Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly provide visual editors where you can select text, click a link button, and enter a URL without touching code. Google Sheets and other spreadsheet applications allow you to create links using the HYPERLINK function. For example, typing =HYPERLINK("https://www.example.com","Link Text") creates a clickable link within a cell. Each platform has slight variations, but the core concept remains the same: select content, specify a destination, and the tool converts it into a clickable link.
Practical Takeaway: Use the platform-native linking tools available in whatever service you're using—they're designed to be user-friendly and require no coding knowledge. Spend 10 minutes exploring your platform's link feature to understand where the button is located and how to use it.
Best Practices for Link Text and URL Destination
The words you choose for your link text significantly impact both user experience and search engine performance. Link text should be descriptive and indicate where the link leads. Phrases like "click here" or "read more" are vague and don't tell users what they'll find. Conversely, text like "learn about renewable energy sources" clearly describes the content users will encounter. Studies show that descriptive link text reduces bounce rates and increases engagement, as users know what to expect before clicking.

For accessibility, descriptive link text is essential. People using screen readers—software that reads webpage content aloud—rely on link text to navigate. If a screen reader encounters a link labeled only "click here," it provides no meaningful information to the user. The same applies to people with visual impairments who use keyboard navigation. Link text should make sense even when read out of context.
URL destinations should be reliable and relevant. A 404 error occurs when a link leads to a page that no longer exists, frustrating users and damaging credibility. Before publishing links, test them by clicking through to confirm they work. If linking to external websites, periodically review these links to ensure they still function. Tools like Google Search Console and free broken-link checkers can identify non-working links across your website.
The URL structure itself matters for SEO. Links to pages with clear, keyword-rich URLs perform better than links to pages with random numbers or unclear naming conventions. For example, a link to "website.com/blog/how-to-organize-your-home" is more meaningful than "website.com/page123." When creating your own URLs, use hyphens to separate words (not underscores), keep them concise, and include relevant keywords when appropriate.
Practical Takeaway: Write link text that answers the question "What will I find if I click this?" Before publishing, test each link by clicking it. Review your links quarterly to catch any that have stopped working.
