Learn How to Pay a San Diego Traffic Ticket

Understanding San Diego Traffic Ticket Types and Violations

San Diego traffic tickets fall into several categories, each with different consequences and payment requirements. Understanding what type of ticket you received is the first step in knowing how to pay it correctly. The San Diego Police Department and California Highway Patrol issue citations for various violations, ranging from minor infractions to more serious misdemeanors.

Infraction tickets are the most common type of traffic citation in San Diego. These include speeding, running a red light, expired registration, improper lane changes, and parking violations. Infractions are not criminal offenses, and they do not result in jail time. However, they do add points to your driving record and require payment of fines and any applicable court costs. According to California Department of Motor Vehicles data, speeding violations represent approximately 30% of all traffic citations issued in San Diego County.

Misdemeanor traffic violations are more serious and include reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, hit-and-run incidents, and driving under the influence (DUI). These violations can result in criminal charges, jail time, substantial fines, and a permanent criminal record. If you received a misdemeanor citation, you will likely need to appear in court rather than simply pay a fine by mail or online.

Parking violations are handled separately from moving violations. San Diego has thousands of parking citations issued monthly for violations such as expired meters, parking in red zones, handicapped space violations, and overnight street parking in restricted areas. Parking citations typically have lower fine amounts than moving violations but still require payment within a specified timeframe.

Vehicle code violations specific to San Diego include equipment violations (broken headlights, non-functioning windshield wipers), failure to provide proof of insurance, and vehicle registration issues. These infractions often result in fines ranging from $35 to $250, depending on the specific violation and your driving history.

Practical Takeaway: Before paying your ticket, identify whether it is an infraction, misdemeanor, or parking violation by reviewing the citation document. The ticket will clearly state the vehicle code section violated and whether a court appearance is required. This information determines which payment method you should use and whether you have options beyond simply paying the fine.

Locating Your Ticket Information and Court Details

Your traffic citation contains essential information needed to pay your ticket and understand your options. The citation document, typically a multi-part form given to you by the officer, includes your name, driver's license number, vehicle information, the specific violation, the fine amount, and court details. If you cannot locate your physical citation, you can search for your ticket information through the San Diego Superior Court system.

The San Diego Superior Court handles all traffic citations issued in San Diego County. The court operates multiple locations, including downtown San Diego, as well as satellite courthouses in Chula Vista, Oceanside, and El Cajon. Each location handles traffic cases for specific geographic areas. Your citation will indicate which courthouse has jurisdiction over your case based on where the violation occurred.

To find your ticket information online, visit the San Diego Superior Court's official website. The court provides a case search tool where you can look up traffic citations by entering your name, driver's license number, or case number (if you have it). This search tool allows you to see the violation details, fine amount, and any deadlines associated with your case. The information is typically available within 3 to 5 business days after the citation is issued.

If you received a parking violation, you may need to search a different system. Parking citations from San Diego's city parking enforcement are managed through the city's parking violations system. You can search for parking citations by license plate number or citation number on the City of San Diego website. County parking violations may be searched through the Superior Court system.

Your citation will show a "due date" or "must appear by" date. This deadline is crucial because failing to respond by this date can result in additional penalties, license suspension, and a failure-to-appear charge. Infraction tickets typically give you 30 days to respond, though you may have options to request an extension.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your case number, violation code, due date, and the courthouse location from your citation immediately. If you cannot find your physical ticket, use the San Diego Superior Court case search tool within one week of receiving the citation to locate your information online and verify the fine amount and deadlines.

Understanding Fines, Penalties, and Additional Costs

Traffic ticket fines in San Diego vary based on the specific violation, your driving history, and whether you have prior violations within a certain timeframe. Understanding what you are paying for helps clarify the total cost you will face. The fine listed on your citation is often just part of the total amount owed, as additional court costs and penalties are frequently added.

The base fine for infractions ranges significantly. A speeding ticket for traveling 1 to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit typically costs $35 to $100. Speeding violations of 16 to 25 miles per hour over the limit may cost $70 to $200, while speeds 26 miles per hour or more over the limit can exceed $300. Running a red light or stop sign violation carries a base fine of $100 to $250. Failure to provide proof of insurance ranges from $100 to $250. Parking violations in San Diego typically cost $45 to $150 depending on the specific parking violation.

California imposes a penalty assessment on top of the base fine. This penalty assessment is currently 200% of the base fine amount. For example, if your base fine is $100, you will owe an additional $200 in penalty assessments, bringing your total to $300. This penalty assessment funds various court and public safety programs in California.
