When you open your Spokane utilities bill, you will see several key sections. The account information section displays your service address, account number, and billing period dates. This information remains consistent from month to month, though your charges may vary based on usage. The bill includes your meter readings, which measure water consumption in cubic feet or gallons. The charges section breaks down costs for each service: water delivery, wastewater treatment, and stormwater management. There may also be adjustments for seasonal variations or corrections from previous billing periods.

Your account number is a critical piece of information you will need when making payments or contacting the city about your bill. This number appears prominently on the bill and should be saved in a safe location. The City of Spokane assigns this number when your service begins and it remains tied to your property address. If you move to a different address within Spokane, you may receive a new account number for that location.

The bill also includes important dates you should note. The due date shows when payment is expected. Late fees typically apply if payment does not arrive by this date. Some bills include a grace period, usually five to ten business days after the due date, before penalties begin. Reading the fine print on your bill provides information about these policies specific to your billing cycle.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a copy of a recent bill in an accessible place so you have your account number and the city's payment instructions readily available when you need them.

You will receive a confirmation number after submitting your payment, which you should save for your records.

Automatic payments, sometimes called ACH or bank draft payments, allow you to have your bill paid directly from your bank account on a set date each month. This method removes the need to remember to pay each month and can reduce the risk of late payments. Many customers find this particularly helpful if they have inconsistent work schedules or frequently travel away from home.

Phone payment is another option for customers who prefer speaking with someone directly. You can call the City of Spokane utilities customer service line and provide payment information over the phone. A representative will process your payment and provide you with a confirmation number. In-person payment at City of Spokane facilities offers another traditional option. You can visit the utilities payment office during business hours and pay with cash, check, or card. The city also may accept payments at certain city facilities or partner locations. In-person payments provide immediate confirmation that your payment was received and processed. If you prefer to pay in cash or do not have online access, this method may be your best option.

Mail payment involves sending a check or money order with your bill stub to the address printed on your bill. Mail payments typically take seven to ten business days to arrive and be processed, so it is important to send your payment well before the due date to avoid late fees. To create an account, visit the City of Spokane's utilities website and look for the section for creating a new online account or logging in. You will need your account number, which appears on your physical bill. You will also be asked to create a username and password. Choose a password that is difficult for others to guess, using a combination of numbers, letters, and special characters. Write this password down in a safe place or use a password manager to store it securely.

Once your account is created, you can log in to view your current bill and billing history. The online portal typically shows charges from the past twelve to twenty-four months, allowing you to track how your usage and costs have changed over time. This historical information can be useful if you want to understand seasonal patterns in your water usage or see how changes you have made affect your bill.

The online account also displays your water usage in detail. Some portals show daily usage graphs, which can help you identify leaks or unusual consumption patterns. If you notice a sudden spike in usage that does not match your normal behavior, this could indicate a leak in your plumbing. Early detection of leaks can save you money and prevent water damage to your property.

From your online account, you can set up paperless billing if you choose. Paperless billing means the city sends your bill to your email instead of printing and mailing a physical copy. This option reduces paper waste and ensures you receive your bill quickly without waiting for mail delivery. You can still print your bill if you need a paper copy for your records.

The online portal also allows you to register multiple properties if you own or manage more than one address in Spokane. Each property can have its own login or be managed under one account, depending on your preference. This feature is particularly useful for property managers or landlords who oversee several rental units.

Practical Takeaway: Set up your online account and check it at least once a month when your bill is due. Reviewing your account regularly helps you catch billing errors quickly and monitor your water usage patterns.

The water charge is based on the amount of water your household or business uses during the billing period. The city measures water consumption in units called cubic feet or gallons, depending on the system used. Residential customers typically see their usage measured in hundreds of cubic feet per billing cycle. A family of four using water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and outdoor watering might use between one hundred and three hundred cubic feet per month, depending on season and habits. The rate per unit of water is set by the city and may change annually or when infrastructure improvements are needed.

Wastewater charges appear on your bill because used water from your home must be collected and treated before it returns to the environment. This service includes the pipes that carry wastewater away from your property, treatment facilities that clean the water, and monitoring systems that ensure the water meets environmental standards. Wastewater charges are typically based on the amount of water you use, since most water that enters your home eventually leaves through the wastewater system. The exception is water used for outdoor irrigation, which does not typically generate wastewater charges.

Stormwater management charges cover the cost of systems that handle rain and snow runoff in the city. The city maintains storm drains, detention ponds, and other infrastructure to prevent flooding and protect water quality. These charges may be based on the size of your
