Learn How to Uninstall Microsoft Edge Safely

Understanding Microsoft Edge and Why You Might Want to Remove It

Microsoft Edge is a web browser that comes built into Windows operating systems. Starting with Windows 10 and continuing through Windows 11, Edge is installed by default and integrated into the system in ways that differ from previous Microsoft browsers. According to Microsoft's own data, Edge is installed on hundreds of millions of devices worldwide, though not all users choose to keep it as their primary browser.

Many people use other browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera for various reasons. Some prefer different features, others have concerns about system resources, and some simply developed habits with other browsers. Whatever your reason for wanting to remove Edge, understanding what the browser does on your system helps you make informed decisions about removal.

Edge performs several functions on Windows computers. It handles certain system tasks, displays web content, manages some Windows features, and integrates with the operating system for updates and services. When you remove Edge, you're changing how your computer handles these tasks, which is why the process requires specific steps rather than a simple deletion.

It's important to note that Microsoft has made Edge increasingly difficult to remove in recent Windows versions. In Windows 11, the browser cannot be completely uninstalled through standard methods because it's deeply embedded in the system. However, you can disable it, prevent it from running automatically, and remove it from your daily use. Understanding these limitations before you begin the removal process prevents frustration and confusion.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to remove Edge, decide whether you want to completely disable it, prevent it from starting automatically, or switch it as your default browser to another option. Your goal determines which method works best for your situation.

Preparing Your System Before Removal or Disabling Edge

Before making changes to Microsoft Edge on your computer, you should prepare your system to prevent problems. Start by backing up any important data, though removing Edge itself doesn't typically delete personal files. However, if Edge stores your browsing history, bookmarks, or saved passwords that you want to keep, export this information first to another browser or storage location.

Close all open Edge windows and tabs completely. Don't just minimize the browser—fully exit it. This prevents the system from trying to access Edge files while you're making changes. Check your taskbar at the bottom of your screen to confirm no Edge windows remain open. If Edge starts automatically with your computer, disabling this feature first makes the removal process cleaner.

Next, identify which browser you'll use instead of Edge. Have that browser installed and tested before you disable or remove Edge. This ensures you won't be left without a way to browse the internet. Popular alternatives include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera. Each has different features and uses varying amounts of computer memory, so choose based on your preferences.

Check what tasks or features you use Edge for specifically. Some people use Edge's reading mode, vertical tabs, or integration with Windows features. If you rely on any Edge-specific features, you may need to find alternatives in your chosen replacement browser before proceeding. Review your saved passwords and bookmarks to understand what you need to transfer.

Create a system restore point before making any changes. On Windows 10 and 11, you can do this by searching for "System Restore" in your Start menu, selecting "Create a restore point," and clicking the "Create" button. This allows you to undo changes if something goes wrong, giving you a safety net for the process.

Practical Takeaway: Spend 15-20 minutes preparing by backing up important data, installing an alternative browser, closing Edge completely, and creating a system restore point. This preparation prevents problems and makes the entire process faster.

How to Remove Microsoft Edge from Windows 10

Windows 10 offers more flexibility for Edge removal than Windows 11, though the process still requires specific steps. Begin by opening your Settings application. You can do this by clicking the Start button and typing "Settings," then selecting the Settings app that appears. Alternatively, press the Windows key and the letter "I" together as a keyboard shortcut.

Once Settings is open, navigate to the "Apps" section by clicking on it in the left menu. Then select "Apps and Features" from the options that appear. Scroll through the list of installed programs until you find "Microsoft Edge." Click on it to expand the options, then look for and click the "Uninstall" button. A confirmation window will appear asking if you want to remove Microsoft Edge. Click "Uninstall" again to confirm.

Windows may prompt you to close Edge if it's running in the background. Allow it to do so. The system will then remove Edge files and entries from your computer. This process typically takes one to three minutes. After completion, you'll see a message confirming that Edge has been removed. You may need to restart your computer for all changes to take full effect, so save any open work before proceeding.

If the standard uninstall method doesn't work, you can try using PowerShell, which is an advanced command tool in Windows. Open PowerShell by right-clicking on your Start button and selecting "Windows PowerShell (Admin)" or searching for PowerShell in the Start menu. Type the command: "Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Remove-AppxPackage" and press Enter. This removes Edge at a deeper system level if the standard method failed.

After removing Edge, verify the removal by checking your Start menu—Edge should no longer appear in your application list. Clear your browser search shortcuts as well, since Windows may still show Edge as a search result temporarily until your system cache refreshes.

Practical Takeaway: Windows 10 users can remove Edge through Settings > Apps > Apps and Features, then clicking Uninstall next to Microsoft Edge. If this doesn't work, PowerShell provides an alternative method. Restart your computer afterward to ensure complete removal.

Disabling and Limiting Microsoft Edge in Windows 11

Windows 11 handles Edge differently than Windows 10. Microsoft integrated Edge so deeply into the operating system that standard uninstall methods don't fully remove it. Instead, you can disable Edge, prevent it from running automatically, and prevent Windows from forcing you to use it. These steps achieve most of what users want from removal without the technical complications of partial system deletion.

Start by preventing Edge from starting automatically. Open Settings and go to "Apps" then "Startup." Look through the list for Microsoft Edge and toggle its switch to "Off." This stops Edge from launching when your computer starts. Next, navigate to Settings > System > Default apps. Find "Microsoft Edge" in the list and click it. A menu of alternative browsers will appear. Select your preferred browser to set it as the default for all web links, which prevents Windows from automatically opening Edge.

To further limit Edge's background activity, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > App permissions. Look for permissions that might show Edge running in the background. Disable any permissions you don't want Edge to have, such as microphone access, camera access, or location data. This restricts what Edge can do even if it does run.

You can also prevent Edge from appearing in your Start menu. Right-click on Microsoft Edge if it appears in your Start menu or search results, and select "Uninstall." While this won't completely remove Edge from the system, it removes its visible presence from your interface. The system files remain, but you won't encounter Edge in your daily use.

For users comfortable with more technical approaches, Group Policy or Registry editing can disable Edge more thoroughly. However, these methods require caution, as incorrect changes can cause system problems. Unless you have experience with these tools, the methods described above achieve the practical goal of keeping Edge off your computer without technical risks.

Practical Takeaway: Windows 11 users cannot fully uninstall Edge, but can disable startup, change default apps to another browser, remove it from the Start menu, and restrict its permissions. These steps prevent Edge from interfering with your daily computer use.

Transferring Your Data Before or After Edge Removal

If you've stored bookmarks, passwords, or browsing history in Microsoft Edge that you want to keep, transfer this data to your new browser before completing the removal process. Different browsers handle this transfer in different ways, and the process takes only a few minutes.

In Microsoft Edge, access your bookmarks by clicking the star icon in the top right corner. Look for options to export or save bookmarks. Edge allows you to save bookmarks as an HTML file that most other browsers can import
