Recover Deleted Photos and Videos From Your Device

Understanding Data Recovery and Why Deleted Files Remain on Your Device

When you delete a photo or video from your smartphone, tablet, or computer, the file doesn't actually disappear immediately. Instead, the device marks that storage space as available for new data. The original file remains on your device's storage drive until new information gets written over it. This is why recovery is often possible, even weeks or months after deletion.

Your device's operating system maintains a file system that tracks where data lives on the storage drive. When you delete a file, the system removes the reference to that file from its catalog but leaves the actual data untouched. Think of it like removing a book's entry from a library catalog while the book still sits on the shelf. A recovery tool can search through the storage drive, find these orphaned files, and restore them to a usable location.

The longer you wait to attempt recovery, the more likely new data will overwrite your deleted photos and videos. If you continue using your device normally—taking new photos, downloading apps, or saving documents—you increase the chance that your deleted files become unrecoverable. Studies show that data recovery success rates drop by approximately 20-30% for every month of regular device use after deletion.

Different devices handle data differently. iPhones and iPads use a file system called APFS. Android devices typically use ext4 or f2fs file systems. Windows computers use NTFS, while Mac computers use APFS. Each system stores deletion information slightly differently, which affects how recovery tools search for lost files.

Practical takeaway: Stop using your device as soon as you realize files are missing. The less you use your device after deletion, the higher your chances of successful recovery.

Recovery Options for Different Device Types

Your options for recovering deleted photos and videos depend on what type of device you own and whether you have backups. Each platform offers different built-in recovery features and third-party solutions.

iPhone and iPad Recovery: Apple devices offer several recovery paths. First, check your Recently Deleted album in the Photos app—items deleted within the last 30 days can be recovered here at no cost. If photos were deleted more than 30 days ago, check whether you have iCloud backups. iCloud stores up to 5 GB of backup data per account. You can review your backup contents by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups. If you have a backup containing your photos, you can restore your device from that backup, though this will replace all current data with the backup version. Alternatively, third-party recovery tools like PhoneRescue or DiskDigger can scan your device's storage directly without requiring a backup.

Android Device Recovery: Android phones and tablets have less built-in recovery features than iOS devices. Google Photos, however, offers a Trash folder that holds deleted photos for 60 days. If your photos were backed up to Google Photos, check that app's trash section first. If you use Samsung devices, Samsung Cloud stores backups if you enabled the feature. For deeper recovery, third-party apps like EaseUS MobiSaver or DiskDigger can scan Android storage. Many Android devices also store a secondary backup on the microSD card, if your phone has one. Check whether your specific phone model supports SD card storage and whether photos were saved there.

Windows Computer Recovery: Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a File History feature that automatically backs up files to an external drive. If you enabled File History before deletion, you can recover files through Settings > System > Storage > Advanced Storage Options > Recycle Bin or through File History directly. If you don't have File History enabled, third-party tools like Recuva (made by Piriform) or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can scan your hard drive or SSD for deleted photo and video files. External hard drives and USB drives connected to Windows computers can also be scanned by these tools.

Mac Computer Recovery: Mac computers store deleted files in the Trash bin for several months before permanent deletion. Check your Trash folder first—you can restore items by right-clicking and selecting "Put Back." If Trash has been emptied, Time Machine backups (if enabled) store hourly backups. Open Time Machine and browse to the date when your files still existed. For files deleted long ago without a backup, third-party tools like Data Rescue or PhoneRescue for Mac can scan your storage drive.

Practical takeaway: Check built-in recovery features (Recently Deleted, Google Photos trash, File History, Trash bin, or Time Machine) before using third-party tools, as these are free and require no installation.

Using Third-Party Recovery Software: What to Know

When built-in recovery options don't work, third-party recovery software offers deeper scanning capabilities. These tools search your device's raw storage for file fragments and can recover deleted photos and videos that are no longer visible to your operating system.

How Third-Party Tools Work: Recovery software uses algorithms to identify file signatures—unique patterns that identify photo and video formats. A JPEG file always begins with specific binary markers (FF D8 FF). An MP4 video file has distinctive header information. Recovery software scans your entire storage drive for these signatures and reconstructs files based on their format structure. This process is called "file carving" and works on devices where the file system references are completely erased.

Popular Third-Party Options: EaseUS offers recovery software for phones, tablets, and computers with free versions that scan your device and show recoverable files before you pay for restoration. Recuva for Windows is particularly effective for SSD drives and has a free version. DiskDigger works on Android phones and doesn't require rooting your device. PhoneRescue works on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. R-Studio offers professional-grade recovery for computers with more advanced scanning options. Many of these tools offer free scanning, meaning you can see what files might be recoverable before spending money.

Understanding Success Rates: Recovery success depends on several factors. If deletion happened within days and your device hasn't been heavily used, recovery rates exceed 80% for most file types. If months have passed or your device has been actively used, success rates drop to 40-60%. For heavily used devices where significant new data has been written, success rates may fall below 20%. Video files are more difficult to recover than photos because they're larger and more likely to be fragmented across different storage areas.

Preparation Before Using Recovery Software: Before using any recovery tool, connect your device to a computer if possible. Most recovery software works better when scanning from a computer rather than running directly on a phone. For phones, some software options include Wi-Fi scanning, but direct USB connection typically produces better results. On computers, if you're recovering from your main drive, consider creating a bootable recovery disk or connecting your drive to another computer. This prevents new data from being written to the drive while recovery happens.

Cost Considerations: Most recovery software offers free scanning and preview features. The paid versions typically cost between $20 and $100 depending on the tool and device type. Professional data recovery services (for severely damaged devices) cost $300-$3,000 but are generally unnecessary for standard deletion recovery.

Practical takeaway: Use the free scanning features of recovery software to see what's recoverable before paying. If the preview shows your important files, purchasing the recovery option becomes a better decision.

Cloud Backup Services and Recovery Through Backup Restoration

Cloud backup services offer the most reliable recovery method for photos and videos. If you've enabled automatic backup, your deleted files may still exist in the cloud even after deletion from your device.

iCloud Backup Details: Apple's iCloud automatically backs up photos through the Photos app if you have iCloud Photos enabled (Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos). Every photo you take gets uploaded to iCloud servers. If you delete a photo from your device, it remains in iCloud for 30 days in the Recently Deleted folder, giving you time to recover it. After 30 days, it's permanently removed from iCloud. You can view your iCloud storage at iCloud.com by signing in to your Apple account. To recover photos, open iCloud.com, click Photos, then Recently Deleted, select the photos you want, and click Recover. This restores them to your library without affecting other data.

Google Photos Backup: Google Photos offers unlimited storage (at
