Stop Spam Calls on Your Landline Guide

Understanding Spam Calls on Landlines

Spam calls to landlines have become a widespread problem affecting millions of households. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Americans received approximately 3.7 billion spam calls in 2023, with landline users experiencing a significant portion of these unwanted calls. Unlike mobile phones, traditional landlines are particularly vulnerable to spam because they are often listed in public directories and are easier for scammers to target using automated dialing systems.

Spam calls on landlines take many forms. Some are robocalls that deliver prerecorded messages about alleged tax refunds, extended vehicle warranties, or medical alert systems. Others are live callers attempting to impersonate government agencies, utility companies, or financial institutions. Certain spam calls aim to collect personal information for identity theft, while others simply want to verify that your number is active so they can sell it to other scammers.

The technology behind these calls has become increasingly sophisticated. Scammers use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services to make calls appear to come from local numbers, making recipients more likely to answer. This practice is called "spoofing." For example, a call might appear to come from your local police department or a bank, when it actually originates from a criminal halfway across the world.

Landline users face unique challenges because many older call-blocking technologies were designed for mobile devices. Additionally, some landline service plans offer limited call management features compared to modern smartphone options. Understanding how spam calls work is the first step toward reducing their frequency and protecting yourself from potential fraud.

Takeaway: Spam calls targeting landlines use automated systems and spoofing technology to appear legitimate, making them difficult to identify without proper knowledge and tools.

How to Report Spam Calls to Authorities

Reporting spam calls serves multiple purposes. It creates an official record of the scam, helps federal agencies identify patterns and major offenders, and may prevent other people from becoming victims. The FCC maintains a Consumer Complaint Center specifically for reporting unwanted calls and texts. You can file a complaint through their website at fcc.gov/complaints without any cost or complicated paperwork.

When reporting to the FCC, provide as much information as possible about the call. This includes the phone number that appeared on your caller ID, the date and time of the call, what the caller said, and whether they requested personal information or money. If the call appeared to come from a government agency or financial institution, mention this as well. The more details you provide, the more useful your report becomes to investigators.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also maintains a complaint database called reportfraud.ftc.gov where you can report spam calls, particularly those involving scams or fraud attempts. If a caller claimed to represent the Social Security Administration, IRS, Medicare, or any government program, you can file a report with that specific agency. For example, the Social Security Administration has a dedicated fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

Local law enforcement agencies sometimes track spam call complaints, especially if they involve potential fraud targeting seniors or vulnerable populations. While many police departments cannot investigate individual spam calls, they may be able to provide information about known local scams or connect you with consumer protection resources. Your state's Attorney General office also typically maintains a consumer protection division that accepts complaints about deceptive calling practices.

Keep records of all spam calls you receive, including dates, times, numbers, and the content of messages. This documentation becomes valuable if a scam progresses to actual fraud. Some people create a simple spreadsheet or notebook entry for each call. If you notice a pattern, such as repeated calls from the same number or similar scams, include this information when reporting.

Takeaway: Report spam calls to the FCC, FTC, and relevant government agencies to create an official record and help prevent others from being scammed; keep documentation of calls you receive.

Call-Blocking Services and Tools Available for Landlines

Many landline providers offer built-in call-blocking or call-screening features as part of their service packages. AT&T Call Protect, Verizon Call Filter, and CenturyLink Call Guard are examples of services offered directly through major carriers. These tools work by comparing incoming calls against databases of known spam numbers and blocking or flagging suspicious calls before they ring through to your phone. Some services offer basic features at no additional cost, while premium versions provide more advanced filtering.

Third-party call-blocking devices can be connected to your landline without requiring your phone company's involvement. These devices sit between your phone line and your handset, analyzing each incoming call in real-time. Products like CPF Telephone Call Blocker and TrapCall's Landline service work with most standard landlines and allow you to manually block numbers, set up whitelist calling (where only approved numbers can ring through), or block calls based on geographic area or number patterns. These devices typically cost between $50 and $200 with minimal ongoing expenses.

Some devices combine call blocking with other features like caller ID announcement (where the device reads the caller's name and number aloud before the phone rings) or do-not-disturb scheduling. Others maintain updated spam number databases and automatically update their blocking lists. When evaluating these products, consider factors like ease of installation, whether they require electricity or internet, how frequently their spam databases update, and customer reviews regarding effectiveness.

If your landline service includes a calling plan with your internet provider, you may have access to software-based solutions through your provider's online account portal. These allow you to manage blocked numbers and call preferences through a website or app, even when you're away from home. Many providers allow you to create multiple call-handling rules, such as routing blocked calls to voicemail or disconnecting them entirely.

When selecting a call-blocking solution, be cautious about legitimate calls that might be filtered. Some services have settings that can be adjusted to reduce false positives, where calls from real organizations are mistakenly blocked. Test any service over several weeks to ensure it balances protection with the ability to receive calls you want to receive.

Takeaway: Landline call-blocking options range from free carrier services to third-party devices; research which tools work with your specific phone service and preferences before implementing them.

Technical Steps to Reduce Spam Calls

One effective approach involves adjusting your landline's call-forwarding settings to be more selective about which calls connect to your phone. Some phone services allow you to set up "selective call forwarding," where calls only ring through if they come from numbers on an approved list. This means unfamiliar callers would go to voicemail rather than disrupting you, though you could monitor messages and return legitimate calls. While this approach requires more effort, it provides maximum control over which calls reach you.

Registering your landline number with the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNCR) at donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 can reduce telemarketing calls. Organizations following the law must scrub their calling lists against the registry at least every 31 days. However, this registration does not stop all spam calls. Legitimate companies and certain organizations like charities, political groups, and surveys are exempt from do-not-call rules. Additionally, scammers by definition do not follow these regulations, so the registry provides limited protection against fraud-related calls.

Request that legitimate companies stop calling you by explicitly telling them during the call. Ask to be placed on their internal do-not-call list. Document that you made this request, including the date and company name. If a company calls again within a reasonable timeframe, you have evidence they violated your request. This approach works better for legitimate businesses than scammers, but it establishes a record if you need to escalate complaints.

Avoid posting your landline number on websites, social media, or online directories unless necessary. The more places your number appears publicly, the more likely scammers will obtain it and add it to their calling lists. If you must list your number online, consider whether you can use a different number or provide an email address instead. Review past registrations on sites you use and remove your number where possible.

Be cautious about answering calls from numbers you don't recognize. If someone claims to represent your bank, utility company, or a government agency, hang up and call the official number listed on your account statement or the organization's official website. Never provide account information, passwords, or personal details to unsolicited callers, even if they sound authoritative or use legitimate-sounding references.
