Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work

Dental implants are replacement teeth that look and function like natural teeth. They consist of three main parts: the implant itself (a small titanium post), an abutment (a connector piece), and a crown (the visible tooth). The implant is surgically placed into your jawbone, where it serves as an artificial tooth root. Over several months, the bone fuses around the implant through a process called osseointegration. Once this happens, the abutment is attached, and finally, a custom-made crown is placed on top.

The process differs from other tooth replacement options. Bridges require filing down adjacent healthy teeth to support a false tooth, which can damage those teeth. Dentures sit on top of your gums and may slip or feel uncomfortable. Implants stand alone and don't require modification of neighboring teeth. They also feel more stable because they're anchored directly into the bone.

Implants can replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or support full dentures. People have had implants for decades—the technology has been used since the 1980s. Modern implants have high success rates, typically between 90-95% over 10 years, according to dental research. The actual success depends on many factors, including your overall health, bone structure, and how well you care for them after placement.

The cost of implants varies widely depending on how many teeth you're replacing and any preparatory work needed. A single implant with crown can range from $1,500 to $6,000 or more. Multiple implants or complex cases cost more. Many general dentists in Skokie offer implants, and some specialize in implant dentistry exclusively.

Practical Takeaway: Dental implants are a long-term tooth replacement option that requires surgery but offers stable, natural-looking results. Understanding the three-part structure and the healing timeline helps you know what to expect if you decide to pursue this treatment.

The Implant Process: What Happens at Each Stage

The dental implant journey typically takes 6 to 9 months from start to finish, though this timeline can vary. The process begins with a consultation where your dentist examines your mouth, takes X-rays, and discusses your medical history. During this visit, they assess whether your jawbone has enough volume and density to support an implant. Some people need bone grafting if their jawbone is too thin or weak—this adds extra time and cost to the overall process.

The surgical placement happens next. Your dentist makes an incision in your gum and creates a small hole in the bone. The titanium implant post is inserted into this hole. The gum is then stitched closed over the implant, which now sits below the surface of your gum. You'll go home the same day. Most people experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort for a few days afterward, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and ice packs.

After surgery, osseointegration begins. This is the critical healing phase where bone grows around the implant. This process typically takes 3 to 6 months. During this time, the implant becomes firmly anchored, creating a strong foundation for your new tooth. Your dentist will monitor your healing with follow-up visits and X-rays. It's important to keep the surgical area clean and follow all post-operative instructions during this phase.

Once osseointegration is complete, your dentist schedules a second, smaller procedure to expose the top of the implant and attach the abutment. This usually requires just local anesthesia and is less invasive than the first surgery. After this heals (typically 2 weeks), your dentist creates a crown that matches your other teeth. Creating the crown usually involves taking impressions or digital scans of your mouth so the crown fits perfectly and looks natural. Finally, the crown is secured onto the abutment, and your new tooth is complete.

Practical Takeaway: Knowing the timeline—surgery, healing, abutment placement, then crown—helps you plan your schedule and budget for implant treatment. Most people return to normal activities within a week of the initial surgery, though the entire process requires patience over several months.

Preparing for Dental Implants: What You Need to Know Beforehand

Before moving forward with an implant, your dentist will review your medical and dental history carefully. Certain conditions can affect implant success. Uncontrolled diabetes makes healing slower and increases infection risk. Gum disease must be treated before implant surgery—placing an implant in a mouth with active periodontal disease is unlikely to succeed. Smoking significantly increases complications and implant failure rates. If you smoke, your dentist may ask you to quit or reduce smoking before and after surgery to improve outcomes.

Some medications can also affect healing. Blood thinners may require adjustment around surgery time. Bisphosphonates (medications for osteoporosis) can cause complications with bone healing. Your dentist needs to know about all medications and supplements you take. This is also why a complete medical history is essential—conditions like heart disease, autoimmune disorders, or previous cancer treatment may impact your suitability for implants, though they don't automatically disqualify you.

You'll need dental imaging before surgery. X-rays show tooth and bone structure, but most dentists now use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), a 3D imaging technology that provides detailed views of your jawbone. This helps your dentist plan exactly where to place the implant and whether bone grafting is necessary. Some Skokie dental offices have CBCT machines in-office; others may refer you to a specialist for imaging.

If your jawbone is too thin or weak, bone grafting may be recommended. During grafting, bone material (from your own bone, a donor, or synthetic material) is placed in your jaw to build up volume. This adds 3 to 6 months to your overall timeline and increases costs, but it gives you a better foundation for the implant. Your dentist will discuss whether grafting is necessary during your consultation.

Practical Takeaway: Getting a complete medical and dental evaluation before committing to implants helps you understand what preparation steps you need and realistic timelines for your situation. Be honest with your dentist about smoking, medications, and health conditions so they can make informed recommendations.

Aftercare and Maintenance: Keeping Your Implant Healthy Long-Term

Once your implant is in place, caring for it is similar to caring for natural teeth, but with some important differences. You brush and floss around the implant just like a natural tooth—this removes plaque and bacteria that can cause problems. However, you must be gentle around the crown where it meets the gum, especially in the first year. A soft-bristled toothbrush is often recommended. Some people use water flossers (water picks) around implants because they're gentler than traditional floss, though traditional floss works too if you're careful.

Unlike natural teeth, implants can't get cavities because the crown is made of porcelain or composite material rather than tooth enamel. However, the gum and bone around the implant can develop problems. Peri-implantitis is inflammation and infection of the tissues around an implant, similar to gum disease. It develops when bacteria accumulate and isn't removed by proper cleaning. This is why oral hygiene is critical. Studies show that people who don't maintain good oral hygiene have higher rates of implant problems.

You need regular dental check-ups—typically twice a year, though your dentist may recommend more frequent visits initially. During these appointments, your dentist checks the implant for any signs of problems and cleans around it professionally. X-rays are taken periodically to ensure the bone around the implant is stable. These routine visits catch small problems before they become serious.

Certain habits can damage your implant. Chewing on hard objects (ice, hard candy, pen caps) can crack the crown—this isn't unique to implants, as it damages natural teeth too. Grinding your teeth (bruxism) puts extra stress on implants and can cause the crown to wear out faster. If you grind your teeth, wearing a night guard protects your implant and natural teeth. Smoking impairs healing and increases infection risk even years after placement. Excessive alcohol consumption may weaken bone around the implant over time.
