How to Reset Your Honda TPMS Light

Understanding Your Honda TPMS Light and What It Means

The TPMS light on your Honda dashboard stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. This light appears as a picture of a tire with an exclamation mark inside it. When this light turns on, it's telling you that one or more of your tires has pressure that's either too high or too low compared to what Honda recommends for your vehicle.

The TPMS system uses sensors located inside or on each of your four tire valve stems. These sensors continuously monitor the air pressure in each tire while you're driving. If any tire drops below 75% of the recommended pressure, or if there's a significant difference in pressure between tires, the light activates. For most Honda vehicles, the recommended tire pressure falls between 30 and 36 PSI (pounds per square inch), though this varies by model year and tire size.

It's important to understand that the TPMS light is a safety feature, not a malfunction indicator. Low tire pressure can reduce fuel economy, cause uneven tire wear, affect your vehicle's handling, and increase the risk of a blowout, especially at highway speeds. Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by up to 3% and extend tire life significantly.

Sometimes the TPMS light comes on during seasonal temperature changes. Cold weather causes air inside tires to contract, which lowers pressure. A single 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature can reduce tire pressure by approximately 1 PSI. This is why many Honda owners see their TPMS light turn on during fall and winter months, even if their tires were properly inflated during warmer weather.

Practical takeaway: Before attempting any reset procedure, always check your actual tire pressures with a tire pressure gauge. Many unnecessary resets occur simply because tires need air added.

Checking Your Tire Pressure: The First and Most Important Step

The first step in addressing your TPMS light is to measure the actual pressure in all four tires. You'll need a tire pressure gauge, which costs between $10 and $25 and is available at any auto parts store, gas station, or online retailer. Digital gauges are more accurate than stick-style gauges, though both work adequately for this purpose.

To check your tire pressure correctly, locate the recommended PSI for your Honda. You'll find this information on a sticker inside your driver's side door jamb, in your owner's manual, or on the fuel door. Do not use the maximum PSI listed on the tire sidewall itself—that number is the tire's maximum capacity, not the proper operating pressure for your vehicle.

Check your tires when they're cold, meaning the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours and hasn't been driven recently. Tires heat up during driving, which temporarily increases pressure readings by 2-4 PSI. If you must check pressure after driving, note that your readings will be higher than the actual cold pressure. Record the pressure for each of the four tires separately, as they can vary from one another.

Here's what to do based on your findings:

• If all four tires are within 2 PSI of the recommended pressure, your tires are properly inflated. The TPMS light may be triggered by a sensor malfunction or a very slow leak.
• If one or more tires are below the recommended pressure by 4 PSI or more, add air at a gas station or tire shop. Most stations have air pumps available free or for a small fee.
• If all tires are significantly underinflated, this suggests a slow leak or temperature-related pressure drop affecting multiple tires.
• If one tire is significantly lower than the others, that tire likely has a leak and may need repair or replacement.

Practical takeaway: Keep a digital tire gauge in your vehicle. Checking pressure takes five minutes and can reveal problems before they become serious safety issues.

Manual TPMS Reset Using Your Honda's Dashboard Controls

After ensuring your tires are properly inflated, you may need to reset the TPMS system so the light turns off. Many Honda vehicles allow you to perform this reset through your dashboard controls without any tools or dealership visit. The process varies slightly depending on your model year, but the general concept remains the same across most Hondas from 2000 onward.

For most Honda models from 2010 to present, follow these steps: First, turn your ignition to the "On" position without starting the engine. Do not press the brake pedal. Look for the TPMS reset button, which is typically located under the steering wheel, near the lower left side of the dashboard. On some models, it may be on the instrument panel or in a different location—check your owner's manual for your specific model's location. Press and hold this button until the TPMS light blinks and turns off, which usually takes 10 seconds. Release the button and start your vehicle to confirm the light has reset.

For Honda models from 2007-2009, the process is slightly different. Turn the ignition on without starting the engine. Press the select or right arrow button on your steering wheel controls repeatedly until you see "TPMS" displayed on your dashboard screen. Press the enter or select button to enter the TPMS menu. Navigate to "Reset" and select it. The system will show a confirmation message. This process takes about a minute but effectively resets all four tire sensors.

For older Honda models (2006 and earlier), a dashboard reset may not be available. These vehicles may require a trip to a Honda dealership or an independent tire shop with TPMS diagnostic equipment to reset the system. Some shops charge $15-$50 for this service, depending on your location and the shop's pricing.

If your dashboard reset doesn't work after following the correct procedure for your model, this indicates either a sensor malfunction, a wiring issue, or that the vehicle's battery was recently disconnected. In these cases, a dealership visit becomes necessary to diagnose the underlying problem.

Practical takeaway: Consult your owner's manual before attempting a reset. Using the correct procedure for your specific model year prevents confusion and wasted time.

Addressing Tire Leaks and Sensor Issues

If your TPMS light returns shortly after you've confirmed proper tire pressure and performed a reset, you likely have either a slow leak in one or more tires or a faulty sensor. These are two different problems requiring different solutions.

To determine if you have a leak, perform this test: Check tire pressure and note all four readings. Wait 24-48 hours without driving the vehicle, then check pressure again. If one specific tire has lost more than 2 PSI, that tire has a leak. Small leaks often occur around the valve stem, the bead (where the tire meets the rim), or from punctures in the tread. Some slow leaks only become noticeable over days or weeks, while fast leaks may be obvious within hours.

If you've identified a tire with a leak, take your vehicle to a tire repair shop. A trained technician will inspect the tire to determine if it can be patched (typical cost $15-$30) or if it needs replacement (typical cost $80-$250 per tire, depending on quality). For safety reasons, never ignore a leaking tire, as continued driving on an underinflated tire can cause tire failure and loss of vehicle control.

If all four tires maintain proper pressure but the TPMS light continues to illuminate, you likely have a faulty sensor. Tire pressure sensors have an average lifespan of 5-10 years. They can fail due to battery depletion, corrosion, physical damage from tire removal/installation, or manufacturing defects. When a sensor fails, it stops communicating with your vehicle's main computer, triggering the warning light.

A faulty sensor requires professional diagnosis and replacement. A Honda dealership can use diagnostic equipment to identify which sensor (if any) is malfunctioning. Sensor replacement typically costs $150-$300 per sensor at a dealership, though independent shops may charge $80-$200. After sensor replacement, the new sensor must be programmed to your vehicle's computer system, which the technician handles.

In some cases,
